Dear EVGA , yesterday my 1080 FTW literally exploded while i was playing a game as usual! As it seems its the common problem with the VRM's. I submitted yesterday my RMA request on the EVGA.eu site but yet no answer or no email....

Why submit an RMA? I would call them and ask to speak with a supervisor - but that's just me.

Remember a while back some forum patrons (possibly moderators, as well) confidently suggesting that nothing was wrong with the GTX 1070/1080 series EVGA produced? And the FurMark stress test Guru3D performed was beyond usual strain these cards would be subjected to? And now we have people actually insisting that only a handful of cards have blown up/caught fire. Say, 10 as opposed to 30.

And to the guy who asked me why I felt the need to post on an EVGA forum about the ROG Strix I am buying instead of EVGA's crippled alternative...THIS is why.

The 1080 FTW cards had some issues with some VRM IC's being out of spec. I bet the OP's card is one of the cards that is affected by one of those defective VRM IC's.

That was something unforgivable for 800E ! And be sure that the next time that i am going to buy a GPU i will seriously consider to do it from EVGA . Especially if you are not fast and reliable on the RMA!

Yeah I'm beginning to worry too. More and more of these post are popping up so how many cards will be burned up within the next year? First they were talking about the furmark extreme cases which was understandable but in normal gaming this shouldn't happen. The lifespan of the components has been greatly reduced if cards already are failing. Not sure what I should fell about having a ticking bomb in my computer and the slow/no response in thermalpads doesn't help either.

Greece is part of the EU and you're covered by EU-wide Consumer Protection laws. EVGA Germany and UK is for the whole EU, so you can call either number and get someone helpful who will be able to deal with the issue.

So evga know that there are problems (as you told) with 1080ftw and don't recall the cards? Why you wait to recall the cards and cause us damage to other parts of our systems!
On the thermal pads section is an optional for us that we have the cards to install but from factory from now on come with the pads, next some vrm ic's issues with 1080ftw, overshight at gamernexus, next what come?

Support is good to try find solution BUT this approach of the problem to not recall the cards we have in ours computers and exhange with brand new (not refurbished) or a full refund is unaccetptable. Never again evga

    Good Reading;
It's clear to us, at this point, that there's no thermal issue with EVGA's cards. Any defects we're seeing are being caused by other factors, like workmanship or manufacturing defects. If you have a problem, contact EVGA -- but it's probably not being caused by thermals, and it does still seem like the internet has amplified these occurrences to a point where it sounds worse than it is in reality.

I use 1070 FTW. I'm expecting a thermal pad to be in for 4 weeks. Sorry, but if you do not send in the near future, it will be filled with burned cards. What are you still waiting for? Let's open the RMA and return the card. We have been patient for over a month. Now hold your Evga hand quickly and start submissions.

We will disassemble the cards and install them again.

    Thank you!

Re: 1080 FTW Exploded (VRM burned caught on fire) 2016/11/24 03:39:34 (permalink)
To be honest i've been following this very closely being the owner of a 1070FTW ACX3.0. So far i've only seen 4 separate destroyed cards. Several were the same picture being used by others to claim their card blew up. Probably for fake internet fame. But EVGA themselves have said out of a million cards shipped they've had about 200 RMA's. That's a failure rate of 0.02%. That is about average for ANY manufacturer.
My washing machine blew up on tuesday. It doesn't mean every single one of that model is faulty. I was just unlucky. One faulty product from a manufacturer doesn't mean you should abandon that manufacturer. Two or three, then fair enough. But this whole thing has been blown out of proportion by low rate gaming/tech journalists publishing sensationalist articles to get clicks. Those sites live or die on the number of clicks they get, so of course they're going to use headlines to get people clicking.
Headlines such as "EVGA cards blowing up for many gamers". Without even caring about checking actual numbers.

In the case of the OP, EVGA have been very good dealing with my issues which were nothing to do with overheating. I've received my thermal pads yesterday which i'm fitting today and i've just received the link to pay shipping for my power link. All in all EVGA have been very good with their support in my experience.
Don't be disheartened by the issues you are facing. It's not EVGA's fault you live in Greece and they have no direct contact there. I got straight into a chat with an EVGA support rep in the UK and he sorted my issues within a couple of minutes. Just make sure their emails aren't being diverted into your spam folder. Good luck with your card, and don't let one failure cloud your judgement. I was a Gigabyte card user for years, but comparing this 1070 FTW to a Gigabyte 1070 the EVGA card had better temps and overclocks. It passed 2GHz out of the box and only hits 64'c under load!

No, i don't work for EVGA or anything like that, and i think this whole mess could have been avoided for a few cents worth of rubber padding. But they've been very proactive on this issue and that should give you confidence in their willingness to help. Plus these FTW cards look badass! lol

    Hello,
Thank you for writing so long. You are very kind.
I live in turkey. I bought this card with high USD price on Amazon. I have been using my card for about 4 months without any problems. The memories come out Samsung and the card is probably one of the first areas.
I have been anxious since these burning and warming incidents happened. It may not have come my way, but it does not mean that it will not happen. As you say, electronic requires luck. Evga released the beautiful product but I was a little buggy because people were getting nervous because I was involved.
It's been over a month and I'm waiting for the thermal pad to be applied.
My card sees the highest 62-63c temperature but I do not know how much the VRM part is getting out ..

Maybe is problem and exaggerate little. That would not be first time.
But EVGA is very popular and that's expected.
Everybody have some hardware problems from time to time...

Example new and excellent iPhone 7... Models with Intel modem are inferior to Qualcomm.
    Imagine that...

I'm curious when you say card explode, did you hear loud when that happen,,, and computer stop to work?

Plus these FTW cards look badass! lol
