Yes, version 3.0.1 only supports 4 cores.  Look a few posts up and there is a link to version 3.0.

Okay, just got -bigadv up and running, and setup to view in FahMon.  FahMon is reporting that "SMP Gromacs CVS, P2681" is worth 25403 points.  Is this correct and does it seem like everything's setup correctly?

Just completed my first -bigadv!

A question though.  Say I need to stop folding for a few days and I need to cancel the current VMware project that's going.  What's the best way to clear out files so that when I run the next -bigadv unit, it will start with a new project and not continue from the previous project that will no longer complete in time?  Thanks for any info.

The bigadv projects have a preferred deadline of 4 days and final deadline of 6 days. After that, the client will delete the work unit and download a new one. Otherwise you can delete the unit with these commands:

fahcontrol stop
rm work/* queue.dat unitinfo.txt

Thank LR!  And another big thank you for providing us with a fairly easy method to process the bigadv projects on our Windows machines - we all owe you big time!

In general this is a bad idea, because it delays Stanford's work for 4 days (the time it takes them to realize that you aren't going to return the data by the preferred deadline).  It will also count against your completion percentage, so if you did this once every 5 times you would be right on the border of failing the 80% test and you would stop getting bonus points.  If you're going to do this often, it would probably be better to switch to -advmethods projects and use the -oneunit flag to stop when you complete one.

Thanks - good info about the -oneunit flag.  But no, I don't plan on doing this often.  In this particular case I need to pull my GPUs for a possible RMA.  But it may be a good idea to just do one at a time.  Are the -advmethods projects worth the same as the -bigadv projects, or are they the same but just use the additional flag?

LR.. Just wanted to let you know, AbeFromanTSKOC got in a chat with me on Steam (only chat client we both had) and went through the whole setup to run VMware and A3 clients. If you ever want to do a new guide and put in a viewpoint from someone who has a bit of a learning problem (severe Narcolepsy) I have a great memory and I'm more than willing to help do a guide that's like a "dummies guide to advanced folding". I'm subbed to this thread but I only check once a week or so or you could PM me. I could even start it and you could fill in the stuff that I leave out.

I just, still, think there are too many guides and each guide is either missing some things or has things that are mainly for advanced users. Now that I know how to do it, I can see in my mind one guide that gradually steps up to the advanced stuff so a new folder could do the simple things first then progress to more advanced stuff. Just an idea if you're game.

The -advmethod projects are much smaller; they complete much faster (maybe 4-8 hours depending on hardware) and the overall ppd is lower.  Oh, and don't use both flags at once; just -bigadv or -advmethods alone.

Sorry if this question has already been asked, but I can't seem to find it.  Is there any way to have the progress of the -bigadv project display or output in the VMware window?

This should do it:

tail -f fah-out.log

I am not sure I understand the question correctly, but there is a risk that if you exit the client before completing the bigadv work unit that the unit will fail on next startup. I do not have a fix for this as it is some kind of issue related to the folding client/core. The best thing is to have some kind of backup in place in the event the work unit is lost.

Are you running the latest image? I went over to JFS for the file system with v1.1 since it was reported to be more stable with the folding cores as far as shutdown and startup goes. While doing some benchmarking recently with some different kernel configurations, I shutdown the bigadv work unit several times and it started back up each time without failure.

Got -bigadv up and running without a hitch. At 3.87ghz my TPF is 31.30
edit: 10 hours to go til I complete my first bigadv WU.
Edit: first WU completed and results being uploaded now. How much of an upload are these -bigadv WU results anyway? It seems like it's been uploading for 10 min or so now.

I moved the web config guide from my site over to the guide here including the screenshots. I also uploaded a new image that has a few new changes. I went from the rc 2.6.33 kernel to the stable one that is available now. I also changed IDE mode to SCSI mode. I hope this may help with the long wait after work unit completion that is still reported from time-to-time. I added the hourly auto-backup option that was requested. This option sets up a cron-job that runs once per hour and compresses the folding data to a file in /var/fah. The hourly compression may add a bit of overhead to the Linux system. The script keeps a history up to five backups in /var/fah. You can run the command ls /var/fah to see if the data is being backed up. I would still recommend TCC's backup scripts because these scripts create a 24-hour history of backups and do not have the overhead from the compression.

It can easily take 20+ minutes to upload a bigadv work unit. The time required will depend on the available upload bandwidth.

Crap, just lost a -bigadv WU due to a required shutdown. It was 62% complete. Why doesn't this image backup data at regular intervals like notfreds does?

Are you using the latest image or at least version 1.1? Since I installed version 1.1 I have not lost a WU and according to the change log on page 1 the newest version does hourly backups automatically. SWEET!!!

Excellent job man, I wish you could have a BR for each version :) Thanks!

The latest one (1.2) does hourly backups if enabled and on the next bootup it restores from the latest backup, which is what I believe Notfred does also.

I'm using 1.1 and will be sure to upgrade to 1.2 after this WU completes. I don't want to lose another WU due to Windows update restarts etc. Fan on my 8800GT is getting noisy so I hope it lasts until then. Sounds like the bearings are worn out. BTW, how much faster is pure Linux for running -bigadv?

You might want to turn off automatic updates.
