From looking at the log, it looks like the folding client was started again when it was already running. You can copy the backup script directly from the old VM to the new one. Just run them both at the same time.

I uploaded a new image available via the guide. I added the things people asked me to add in addition to a few other things I was planning on adding in. Here is a list of a few items updated: - Auto-login so that you no longer have to type in the username and password on boot. - For the web: + Added advmethods option. + Added verbosity 9 option. + Added static IP option. + Restore on boot option which does the same thing that is always enabled in 0.7 where data is backed up on shutdown and restored on boot. With this option, you can choose to enable or disable this feature. This is always enabled for Ramdisk. + Reboot option on Submit for web config so that you do not have to type in reboot in the console after config + Web based administration which is tied to a console tool called fahcontrol. These functions can be used in the web or console. This feature seems to work good for me, but may still need some work. + I was asked to add an option MPICH_NO_LOCAL which is reported to help with dual-core processor folding. - Some file system optimizations that I hope will help with long delay after work unit completion. There is also the option to run the file system with nobarrier now. - Kernel 2.6.33. This is still an rc, but has been running stable on my systems and has also given me a small boost in frame times over 2.6.32. Let me know if there are any issues with the new kernel. The rest is in the ChangeLog.

I have seen that only once but I manually killed the client and restarted it. I have never seen the client start itself back up like that.

My sister always kills the client at the top of the VMware console because she doesn't know what to do. I need to give her instructions on what to do next time. Might as well take this opportunity to update to the latest version. For this step here, is the location supposed to be the location of the shared folder that was created? WIN_SHARE_LOCATION=//I7/FAH_Backup (note the slashes are in the opposite direction) For this step here, I don't understand where I'm suppose to copy the files to. 6. Copy the following files to \\FAH\fah after the VM is done booting · backup_hour.sh (script you can manually kick off an hourly backup using) For here, do I have to get my sister to type this each time the folding client starts? 9. Run the start_folding.sh script by typing the following command: ./start_folding.sh P.S. I hate the EVGA forums and how it's so difficult to multiquote and what not. It always screws up.

//I7/FAH_Backup would be the shared directory you created on your host OS. There should be a bunch of directories that are saved to starting with hour 0, 1, 2, etc... If you have to restore your work unit due to corruption then you simply take the contents out of directory /0, /1, /2, (whichever is the latest save) and copy them to the VM shared directory. By default the VM shared directory is \\FAH\fah

The only trouble I had was with these two lines. I typed them out, but for instruction #8, nothing happened so I proceeded to instruction #9, where I got an error. I ended up rebooting the client and didn't run instruction #9 again. 8. Run the cron_backup_setup.sh script by typing the following command: ./cron_backup_setup.sh *Note: don’t run this command ever again, the changes will be persistent ./start_folding.sh

cron_backup_setup.sh should run to completion immediately and return to the command prompt. This script just creates a directory in the VM under /mnt/winshare so that when mounted properly copying data to it will show up under the windows share. It also adds the copy and time synchronization jobs to the cron job. So if you saw no errors from it then it most likely ran properly. I can't help out with step #9 without knowing what error message you saw. If you see crond showing up every hour and every ten minutes past the hour, don't worry about those, that is the cron daemon working. On the hour a backup is made and ten minutes after the time will be synced just in case it starts drifting. If you see some message that appears to be due to the copy failing make sure you have hacked up the Windows registry as shown at the start of the instructions.

As for the shared backup folder that I created, there's nothing in the 0-23 directories.

You will not see the /win_share directory unless you navigate to it "cd /mnt". The fact that the OS is telling you it's there (that's not my stuff) means it's there so don't worry about it. The error message you are seeing translates to "You are already running FAH and you are trying to run it again". When you say that you exit the client how are you doing this? You have to hit "Ctrl + C" to kill the client so if you are not doing that then I think that's what is probably causing the problem. The backup stuff will only copy the work unit files and so if the client isn't starting then there is nothing to copy. Also the copy only happens when the time reaches an hour so those scripts had another ~22 minutes to go before a backup would start if you look at the 5:37:37 time that the VM is reporting. I recommend powering down the VM, deleting the files in the /work directory, delete queue.dat and unitinfo.txt in the home directory and then run the "start_folding.sh" script.

Typed "cd/mnt" into the console and it said no such file or directory exist. Just woke up and checked the folding status. It's continued to fold despite giving me the error message. As for how the client is usually killed, I assume my sister kills it by closing the X at the top right. I checked the shared folder that I made for backing up and there's nothing in the folders so I guess I did something wrong. I'll just let this WU finish and maybe leave it at that. You say to delete the files after I power down the VM, but if the VM is powered down, I can't access those files can I? Back when I was using the Notfred client, I could only delete those files if the VM was still running.

Looks great linuxrouter, and very timely! I'm looking forward to trying it out when my current unit finishes tomorrow. This version should be MUCH more user friendly for the average Joe. BR requested!

Back when I was using the Notfred client, I could only delete those files if the VM was still running. Ahhh I think I know what's happening here. So when you kill VMware using the 'X' button in the top right the program should save the state of the VM for the next time you run it. So if you turn the VM back on do you see a bar going across along the lines of "restoring virtual machine"? If so that means your previously running FAH client will start back up. So you either need to teach your sister how to shut down the client properly .... I don't have a sister so I can't image how much fun that will be :) ...Or you can do this while the client is already running: Make a copy of the file "start_folding.sh" and renaming it "my_sister_workaround.sh" (or whatever you want). Find this line and add a "#" in front of it. So instead of this: ./fah6 -bigadv -smp 8 Use this instead: #./fah6 -bigadv -smp 8 That will make sure all the mounting and cron stuff is setup properly without running the client again. Make sure when you modify this file you run "fromdos my_sister_workaround.sh" since if you use a Windows file editor it might bugger up the Linux style line feeds which fromdos will correct afterwords.

Davabled Looks great linuxrouter, and very timely! I'm looking forward to trying it out when my current unit finishes tomorrow. This version should be MUCH more user friendly for the average Joe. BR requested! Thanks. :)

geokilla Typed "cd/mnt" into the console and it said no such file or directory exist. After upgrading to VM build 1.0 and switching the VM to bridged mode I think the mount is failing when you follow the instructions. Instead of using the host name in start_folding.sh you can use the IP address directly. i.e. something like this //192.168.1.50/FAH_Backup. I'm not sure why the host name doesn't resolve properly but when I go to ping it the host name it doesn't show up as expected on my machine. Now this will only work properly if your host IP address doesn't change, whenever someone uses a router for their internet connection I always recommend using static IPs anyway. To test if it's working after running the start_folding script if you run "./backup_hour <x>" where <x> is a number between 0-23. If it works then you should see two files and a folder show up in the appropriate folder on the windows side. I will probably add a new set of scripts (v0.2) to include the ability to run the backup stuff alone without starting the client now that LR has automatic folding capabilities built in. When I do so I'll also add this new information to the document that comes in the .rar file. So that we don't cause this thread to get too much longer I'm going to create a new thread just for the backup scripts and ask for it to be a sticky so that we can keep the subjects separate. **** Everyone please post backup script questions/issue here instead: http://forums.evga.com...p;mpage=1#130442 ****

linuxrouter, can you add in the option to select the priority of your folding image with the next build? There's less lag when you're using the computer and it can perform other tasks quicker, unless you're running a dedicated folding machine of course. For Core i7: priority.ungrabbed = "idle" priority.grabbed = "idle" processor0.use = "TRUE" processor1.use = "TRUE" processor2.use = "TRUE" processor3.use = "TRUE" processor4.use = "TRUE" processor5.use = "TRUE" processor6.use = "TRUE" processor7.use = "TRUE" For Quad Core: priority.ungrabbed = "idle" priority.grabbed = "idle" processor0.use = "TRUE" processor1.use = "TRUE" processor2.use = "TRUE" processor3.use = "TRUE" For Dual Core: priority.ungrabbed = "idle" priority.grabbed = "idle" processor0.use = "TRUE" processor1.use = "TRUE"

The limitation right now is with VMware Player. VMware Player 3.0 is limited to 8-processors. If you try and set higher, the player will give an unsupported notice and exit. As soon as VMware Player adds support for additional processors, I can add that into the image. In fact, the kernel already supports up to 32-processors. I only have to add the additional processor support to the web interface, which is simple to add.

LR, I'd like to use the autostart FAH option on two cores of my Q6600, is that possible? I cannot select 2 cores, does that mean it's gonna attempt starting "-smp 4"?? Thanks man!

You will want to edit the VMware settings and select 2-cores. Then in the web interface, select four cores. The fah6 client will not run less than four processes even if you try and set something less such as with -smp 2. However, -smp 4 works without issues on a dual-core.

Thanks, yes, I modified the VMware settings and it seems to work as it is. I'm getting ~2750 PPD compared to ~2300 PPD with notfred's image! That's like 20% better! Awesome!

It looks like Stanford released a new client version 6.29 today: http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=12997 It has a bug fix and support for the new SMP2 cores. I plan to add it to the image. However, if you want to install into your existing image, these are the commands to do that: wget http://www.stanford.edu/g...ease/FAH6.29-Linux.tgz mkdir old cp fah6 mpiexec old tar xzf FAH6.29-Linux.tgz I fired it up on one of my bigadv rigs and seems to be running okay so far.

Was wondering if there will be a new release with the newly released client version 6.29? http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=12997 I may attempt the new install, but never been much with linux, your setup is a great help. Edit: nvm, I now see your post. For some reason I wasn't seeing the past 5 pages of post.

Can the client be upgraded in the middle of a WU (with the client shut down of course) or should I wait until the WU completes? I don't want to loose WU progress since my next one will send me past the 3 million mark :)

I would wait until the work unit is finished. There is still some time left to do the upgrade.

Are those options that are added to the vmx file or are they added somewhere else? They're added to the VMX file that you open in notepad. It's the file that you double click to open up your image.
