Just thought I'd ask that the log doesn't get cleared on system or VMware reboot. Like I said, I turn my computer on nightly and the logfile is still there according to FahMon, letting me keep track of the folding log for the past couple of runs and stuff.

I will make that change. My only concern was that the log file would eventually end up being large from long-term use.

but I didn't get anything. Maybe cus I restarted the computer. I did seem to get the corresponding amount of points though.

/tmp/langouste is created once the work unit is completed. This is when the helper script fires off which copies the data to /tmp/langouste and attempts to transmit the work unit.

Once it starts that process, there should be a directory in the form of a number matching the process id and a log file.

I assigned 4800 MB to the virtual machine and even though my memory usage in windows is a little high, i don't believe it should be an issue.  I started running ./fah6 -bigadv -smp 7, but i believe i was running -smp 6 at the time of this error seeing if -smp 6 helped prevent it.

1920 seems to be going well, but i would much rather be crunching bigadv.

Any input is appreciated, Thanks!

bigadv is memory intensive and uses a lot of memory (3-4GB). Have you done a LinX run on your system? If not, I would at a minimum try running LinX with a large problem size that uses a lot of memory to test for memory stability.

Is anyone having problems getting the configuration webpage for build 0.7 to remember your settings?  Any time I reboot the VM the settings seem to be lost.  Things like the passkey and host name are lost which is causing me problems downloading new work units or finding the VM on my network since the name keeps going back to "FAH"

I have not come across this issue yet on my system. Which browser are you using?

Firefox 3.5.6.  I have not seen this issue for a little while after following these steps:

1)  Configure the VM through the web interface
2)  Click the submit button in the web interface
3)  Shutdown the VM running 'shutdown -h now'
4)  Start up the VM and start folding

It is probably just a coincidence that I haven't seen this issue for a while since I doubt those steps would change the behavior.

I'm 10 minutes into a LinX run set to 4801 MB and windows is reporting 5683 of 6136 MB and I'm listening to pandora and browsing the internet without a hitch, 100% load on all cores.

I added a link to a development image in the guide. I plan to try and keep this image updated with any new updates and hope to use this image for testing. Here is the latest screenshot of some new stuff I have just recently added in. A couple of the latest changes include auto-login in the console and automatic reboot after config submit via the web.

Is it possible for you to make it so that the log gets deleted after it reaches a certain size (like the Windows and GPU clients) or make an option whether to have it cleared each time the Folding client reboots? I find it more useful to have an extended log like what I currently see with all my folding clients. I don't mind manually deleting it if I have to.

Btw, sometimes when I start up the computer, I get the following type of error. Rebooting the client makes it go away.

Oh I'd just like to say that your image seems to be much better than the Notfred client. It's faster too. Thanks for all your hardwork!

Hello
If Bigadv -smp 8 need 4500 MB memory, and Bigadv -smp 7 3600 MB memory in WMware 3.0. But what about Bigadv -smp 6 ?
Is it possible to run WMvare thru Win XP with only 4 GB, like Bigadv -smp 6 3000 MB ?

I have a feeling that you won't be able to complete the bigadv unit fast enough with 6 cores to get any bonus. Unless you have a monster 6-GHz LN overclock or a multi-CPU rig, in which case it is unclear why you only have 4Gb RAM.

I added something in to check for file size and to remove the file after a specific size is exceeded.

Sometimes the client does not shutdown properly on system shutdown. I send a TERM signal to the fah6 client but the client does not always shutdown the cores properly for some reason. There might have been a lingering process id file causing this message. I am still looking for a better way to shutdown the client.

It could be that I shutdown via VMware instead of using the shutdown command that you said we should use...

Oh and stop updating so quickly! You're updating faster than I can finish a WU!

To be safe I would recommend making a backup of whatever work unit you are on (while the client is still running), when the copy is done kill the client using Ctrl + C, then type 'shutdown -h now'.  The client is updating the work folder as it's completing the work unit so by essentially killing the power to the VM you may corrupt the data.

No with that said I mentioned to copy the work unit before killing the client.  I'm not sure why but sometimes when you kill the client it doesn't 'die' properly and may corrupt the work unit as well.

When I say backup the work unit I mean the 'work' directory, as well as the queue.dat and unitinfo.txt files.

Linux is good for ya, puts hair on your chest :)  I agree this will be great for new users while keeping the ability to drop down to the command line when you need to or if you happen to be a power user/someone who wants to break the Winblows chains :)

For those of you who want to use the ramdisk option of the 'start_folding.sh' script I recommend making this change to the script file:

On line 15 change "buildramfs" to "buildramfs <x>" where 'x' is the size of the ramdisk you want to use.  x is in kilobytes so if you wanted a 3GB ramdrive then you would use 3 * 1024 * 1024 = 3145728 as the value for x.  I found the default value wasn't large enough due to all the junk left behind in the work directory by the folding client.  3GB is probably overkill but I have seen the work directory grow to around 2GB in the past.  If you go with a smaller ramdrive I would occasionally inspect the work directory and delete files that haven't been modified in a while (those are old work units that never got deleted when the new one started)

You can select default for all those options except the one for advmethods. Take a look at my screenshot:

Probably the simplest thing would be to go to the web address and setup from there. Above the login prompt it will give you the http address to enter in the browser. From there you can enter your username, team, passkey, and enable auto-startup.

Here is an example on what to set:

Web Config

Just make sure to enter your user and passkey in addition to what is shown in the example and submit.

For the first ten work units or if you are folding on a I7 proc at the root@FAH:~#  you should type ./fah6 -smp 8 and then after the first ten work units are complete you can restart the client and do -bigadv work units by typing ./fah6 -bigadv -smp 7  to fold with 7 cores.

I have never done any type of cpu folding or used -bigadv so do i have to first run normal wu, and how. Right now i am at the command prompt and it says            FAH login:  autofah  (automatic login)
                                                                                                                    No mail .
                                                                                                                    root@FAH:~#
Now what?

any help would be appreciated as i am new to folding.

You need 10 'regular' smp WUs completed first under that passkey.  They don't all have to be completed by the same machine.  Afterwords you can start folding bigadv work units as long you maintain an 80% return rate.  If you have a few extra machines I recommend having them all fold for a day to rack up some regular ones and then switch to bigadv the following day.  During this time it would be good to monitor the machines to make sure they are stable as many people think their machine is stable and then folding shows that this is not the case sometimes.

Also if you haven't already sifted through this thread I would do so, there is quite a bit of good information covered that you might want to know ahead of time.

I ended up doing an XP-32 install for a development project I was working on. Since I have the 32-bit up and running, I wanted to see if VMware will allow for running 64-bit Linux in 32-bit Windows. It looks like the 64-bit image does work just fine in 32-bit Windows. I have it running on a Q6600 (@3.0 GHz), 4-cores engaged, and 1.5GB allocated. Frame time average is 5:24 so far. I was getting 5:11 in native Linux via the same system and project.

Ya that won't work since the "thunking layer" can only translate wide to narrow instructions and not the other way around.  They could make it work but the performance would be low so they just expect (and support) you to match the native width of the host processor.  I've asked a few at VMware about this and although they didn't give me a straight answer this is what I concluded.  Sun is the same way with virtualbox.

For some reason my client now started using just 4 cores, not 8... Nothing has changed, yesterday it was using all 8 cores just fine. Here's how the output looks like:

(Sorry can't post the text - FAHlog for some reason is much less verbose than what I see on the screen).

Any ideas? VMware set to 8 CPUs, FAH started with -smp 8.

Note the NNODES=4, and my host CPU load hovers around 45-50%...

It looks like your client may have picked up a project tied to FahCore_a1.exe which is limited to 4-cores. Stanford is having some server issues so this could be why. Can you check to see which core is running?

ps xa |grep -i fah

Yup, bulls eye. So basically nothing's wrong with the client, it's the server that doesn't have bigadv's in stock?

I wonder if there is a way to "stock up" on bigadv's.
