Tasmac Hey LR, How ya doing? Hope everything is well with you. I finally upgraded from v0.1 to v0.6 seems to be working well. I had some problems with network, but got it going. seems to be doing well. got a question for ya what does the option tear's Langouste de-coupler on boot do? and as usual well done on all the hard work you've done. My oveclocked GPU's thank you ;) Hey Tasmac. Going okay here. How are things with you? The de-coupler will make it so that a new work unit can start downloading while the finished one is uploading. This will allow for quicker startup of the next work unit.

geokilla All rights I got 0.6 up and running, folding the normal 1920 point WUs. I got a final question. Is this like the Notfred client where if I shut down the VMware, the folding progress will automatically start from the last checkpoint? Reason being is that I shut my computer off at night. @linux. Thanks for answering my questions earlier. I saw on the first page, first post that most of my questions had already been answered. I have it set to do the backup on shutdown (before shutting down fah6) and restore on startup when a Ramdisk is enabled. I am working on updating the scripts to do this even when the Ramdisk is not enabled and when auto-startup is enabled.

Just started downloading the VMWare-FAH-0.6.zip torrent. Going really slow (about 8 hours) with only one slow seed. I'll try to keep the torrent up & running for others. edit: Torrent up and seeding now I'm thinking about giving this another shot, but not the -bigadv. I'm thinking about doing using 5 cores of my i7 for the 1920 pointers with one instance of VMWare Player. (I'm currently running 5 uniprocessor clients, about 2800 ppd total on the CPU and I'm pretty happy with them, much easier than the stress I was getting running SMP back in late June when we started getting problematic work units which caused me to give up on them, although the almost 8000 ppd was nice for the few months it was working) Edit/Question: How do we get the virtual machine to display the F@H progress, similar to what the console clients do? (I already know how to do it F@HMon and HFM) Ah, it was right there on the screen, duh. After logging into the VM client, type tail -f fah-out.log

You can run these commands: fahbackup shutdown -h now fahbackup will copy the queue.dat and work directory to a directory called backup. I plan to upload an updated image soon that will do this automatically on shutdown as well as a restore on boot. I would still recommend running the backup scripts, because it does a hour-by-hour backup. This is handy to have in the event that the last backup has some kind of issue.

Guess that's one less thing to worry about. When starting up the Folding image, I get the option to choose between 2.6.32.2-intel and 2.6.32.2-amd. Is there a difference between the two? I have an AMD CPU. Oh and I managed to change the priority of Folding using the following: priority.ungrabbed = "idle" priority.grabbed = "idle" processor0.use = "TRUE" processor1.use = "TRUE"

Is there a way to default to that kernel? I have to be pretty quick in that boot up screen in order to select the AMD kernel. And it's usually my sister booting up the computer so if I can't default it to the AMD kernel, it'll go to the Intel kernel. And speaking of the kernel, is the AMD kernel supposed to fold better on a AMD processor? I'm getting more or less the same amount of PPD.

You have to edit /etc/lilo.conf and add a default entry: nano /etc/lilo.conf Just below lba32 add: default = linux-2.6.32.2-amd Then run: lilo I do not have an AMD system to the test the AMD kernel with. I added it in there in case it might help performance on AMD chips. The kernel has the option to build for AMD chips instead of Intel or generic so I thought it would be worth a try.

TheCrazyCanuck Maybe it's the jetlag and I just missed it but what's the difference between build 0.6 and 0.7? I added a few more things to the web interface. Someone over at folding forum asked if I could add an option to enable NTP, which I did. I also added an option for specifying Ramdisk size and for enabling the oneunit option. There were a couple other minor issues with the scripts I needed to fix up. I also made it so when Auto-start or Ramdisk is turned on, the system does a backup of the folding files on system shutdown and a restore of the files on boot. This was already enabled for the Ramdisk in 0.6, but I thought it might be handy to have even if the Ramdisk is disabled. The core Linux system is still the same. The changes are mainly with the web and init files.

I just finished my first bigadv on 0.6 and all seemed to go well until it had uploaded the WU, then it seemed to hang between WUs. I have points for the WU so that's not a problem, it just the pc sat there doing nothing whilst I'm at work. The next one is due to finish 6hours before I finish work.

Downloaded VMware 3.0 and the v0.6 image file. Got everything installed and going thanks to the great directions here. However I'm noticing some network issues, particularly in games such as MW2. MW2 is showing my NAT type as "Strict" instead of "Open" where it was previously before installing VMware. I also needed to enable the "Virtual Technology" option in the BIOS CPU page in order to get VMplayer to work in 64bit mode. Uninstalling the VMware 3.0 Player got my network working correctly with games again. I also noticed LR recently posted the v0.7 image and I sure would like to get this going again, but not if it's affecting my network for gaming. Anyone got any ideas on this? Thanks!

The folding client does download fairly large work units, especially if you have bigadv enabled. The bigadv ones can take 15-30 minutes to download. The download process can affect network performance. Otherwise, I am not entirely sure what was cause the network issues. Do you have any other firewalls installed beyond Windows firewall?

LR - thanks for the reply. No firewall other than the standard Win7 firewall installed. The thing is that I wasn't even folding while gaming - VMplayer was installed, but not running. So I'm pretty sure it's not a bigadv download process issue. I believe something in the VMware 3.0 Player itself is somehow causing this issue. When starting up MW2 and its showing the NAT type as Strict, it's suggested to enable UPnP on the router - however, it already is. Uninstalling VMplayer resolved this network issue though. Anyone else running these bigadv units on a Win7 machine and play online MW2 multiplayer as well? I'd be curious to know what your NAT type is showing as well.

Is anyone having problems getting the configuration webpage for build 0.7 to remember your settings? Any time I reboot the VM the settings seem to be lost. Things like the passkey and host name are lost which is causing me problems downloading new work units or finding the VM on my network since the name keeps going back to "FAH"

linuxrouter Which log is this from? Is it the one via the web or the one via the console? It was all I could get from Fahmon. How can I print off what's on the VMware window, or is it in a file in // FAH/fah?

geokilla I may be having a problem. I finished folding the 1920 point WU and have the Langouste De-coupler enabled from the web. It seems that my WU can't be uploaded to the server, but it proceeded to get a new WU just fine. ... I asked that question yesterday, see LinuxRouters helpful info here: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=105080 The gist of it: It should be working just fine and you can ignore those errors, but if you want to be sure check out the link.

TheCrazyCanuck Is anyone having problems getting the configuration webpage for build 0.7 to remember your settings? Any time I reboot the VM the settings seem to be lost. Things like the passkey and host name are lost which is causing me problems downloading new work units or finding the VM on my network since the name keeps going back to "FAH" I have not come across this issue yet on my system. Which browser are you using?

If you have the auto-start turned on, there should be a log there called fah-out.log. You can access it with this command: more fah-out.log Otherwise you can access the same file via the network share in Windows. The log is cleared on system reboot though.

Tasmac LR everything went well, v0.6 finished wu today no probs. it took me a while to update from v0.1 to v0.6 so it may be a few before I update again. doing ok LR, glad your well p.s is there a pause on this? I mean if I had something to do and needed to pause -bigadv - in linux not the vm. Glad to hear 0.6 has worked out for you. Holding off on the update should be fine. I am still doing a bit of work on the image. There are two signals for stopping and starting a process: SIGCONT 18 Continue executing, if stopped (POSIX) SIGSTOP 19 Stop executing(can't be caught or ignored) (POSIX) You could try something like this: kill -19 `pidof fah6` kill -18 `pidof fah6`

It must have been cleared as I'm sure the vmware showed more entries at about 10.23 and I cam back in at sometime after 12. I'll just have to see how this one goes when it's done.

Just thought I'd ask that the log doesn't get cleared on system or VMware reboot. Like I said, I turn my computer on nightly and the logfile is still there according to FahMon, letting me keep track of the folding log for the past couple of runs and stuff. I tried the ls /tmp/langouste more <filename> The filename should be in this format: langouste-helper-XX.log but I didn't get anything. Maybe cus I restarted the computer. I did seem to get the corresponding amount of points though.

geokilla ls /tmp/langouste cd /tmp/langouste more <filename>
I added a command in there, I'm guessing like me you forgot to change to the directory before trying the more command.

I am pretty new to folding, but am trying to get involved. Anyways, I just recently picked up a i7 920 setup with 6gbs of ram and have clocked it to 4.2ghz and since that is a lot of power for my day to day use i would love to put it to a good use. Anyways, I'm having trouble with the -bigadv part, for some reason it never gets very far and I have a screenshot to show exaclty what is going on. I assigned 4800 MB to the virtual machine and even though my memory usage in windows is a little high, i don't believe it should be an issue. I started running ./fah6 -bigadv -smp 7, but i believe i was running -smp 6 at the time of this error seeing if -smp 6 helped prevent it. 1920 seems to be going well, but i would much rather be crunching bigadv. Any input is appreciated, Thanks!
