hey LR the verson 6 look good.

I like the look of the WEB interface and options ( i haven't try it yet )

also I like the auto startup option, something that i can't seem to do on native linux on running on 8 cores. ( i can run the cron job but it only start on 1 core )

because i am still running native Linux. But you are making me thinking of switching back to window/Vm so i can run the bigadv and the GFX at the same time.

I just discovered this thread today after wondering what bigadv was. Forgive me if the answer to this query is somewhere within the 366 messages, but I am impatient...hopped up on the bean!

Will Linux64_FAH.vmx run on Windows Virtual Machine? I am in the process of downloading VMWare and I guess I don't have any problem using it, but I already have multiple instances of WVM running. VMWare seems like a better program, but the hoops to setup are not what I am used to for this type of thing.

Thanks.

you should not have any issue running fah.vmx on VM. but are you using a i7 or dual socket 1366 cpu for the bigadv?

Some people have said that the clock drifts with VMware player, which can causes inaccurate readings in programs like HFM and FahMon. I made some adjustments in the kernel that I hope will help with that. I have not seen the clock drift after a few hours of use with the new version. However, with the possibility of clock drift, it is hard to tell for sure what the actual performance was with the older version for comparison to the new version.

I run the auto-startup through an rc script on boot if enabled. I put the fah6 process into the background and that seems to work okay.

I am also working on a USB thumb drive image that has the same features including auto-startup.

Do you mean Windows Virtual PC? If so, unfortunately Virtual PC only supports one processor and is limited to 32-bit support for the virtual OS. The Linux system and bigadv core app is 64-bit and ideally would have 8 cores to work with. However, I have not had any problem running VMware Player alongside Virtual PC.

Setup of VMware is fairly simple. The image already comes with a preconfigured VMX file so it is really just a matter of finding the file and firing it up in VMware to get the Linux system booted.

I ran through the scripts yesterday and they seem to start up without issues. The CIFS mounted okay and Cron appears to be working also. I did not get a chance yet to test out the backup extensively, but will hopefully be able to do that in the next day or so. Thanks.

It is an i7. Is that necessary? Could it run on a quad machine (Q6600) without HT?

I downloaded the image and I may try it on this machine. I have been running all the folding programs in the background 24/7 while doing "real" computer work. However, I used to run the GPU on one machine with an 8600 GTS, and it would bog the video down so bad that the computer was unusable while the GPU was folding. On two GTS 250's, I get no annoying performance degradation. Is this bigadv thing going to make the computer unusable for anything but folding?

With a quad processor like the Q6600, I would suggest running the regular 1920-pt work units. You can get those by leaving out the -bigadv flag. Bigadv was really intended for 8-core configurations or systems that can finish these work units in less than 4-days.

I have not noticed much if any performance related issues while folding bigadv on my system. However, bigadv does need a lot of RAM. If you decide to run bigadv with 7-cores, you will need at least 3600MB of available RAM for the app and more than 4GB for 8-cores.

I'll give this a try once I finish my current WU. I'll be folding on an Athlon X2 @ 2.6Ghz. I skimmed through the last 2 pages so forgive me if my questions has been answered before.

1. This client will be similar to the Notfred client that I'm currently using where it can auto start (as seen in the screenshot). Like I can put the shortcut to the Windows Startup folder and it'll shortly start folding by itself.

2. What's Ramdisk?

3. I assume the Langouste De-coupler is useful as I can get a WU while it's uploading the WU that I finished? At least that's what I think it does after skimming through the folding forum thread.

4. What's the hostname for?

Many thanks!

1) I think that should work fine to run it in the Startup folder. Once the client is configured, fah should fire up on next reboot.

2) This is for running the folding work directory in RAM via a RAM disk. Several people requested this feature as well as Langouste support. The main thing with the RAM disk is you need the extra memory for it and a backup of the folding files in case something goes wrong. The RAM disk helps significantly speed up the write process after unit completion.

3) Yes, Langouste makes it possible for downloading a new work unit while uploading the finished one at the same time. This helps out quite a bit with bigadv because it takes a long time to send the data off due to the large size of the data.

4) The hostname is for people running the VM image via multiple systems on the same network. It allows for giving a unique name to each system. The default can be left as is unless you want to rename the system to something else.

because I am running 2 on the same auto dhcp router

I was running build 0.4 on two machines on the same network and somehow I was able to distinguish between the two systems called "FAH" on the host it was running on..... not sure why that was possible but when I get home I'll definitely give each VM a different host name.  My folding machine stopped returning work units so hopefully there was just a power outage or something since I won't be arriving until Sunday :(

There is an issue with 0.4 with a file called  /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd.duid. This file was causing duplicate IP issues in some cases between VM's on the same network. I removed that file in 0.6 to fix that. In 0.4, this file can be removed manually and the system rebooted to fix the IP conflict.

Has the back up script been incorporated into V0.6 or do I still need to run it seperately?   I've just finished my current bigadv, so might as well get 0.6 up and running.

Not that I know of.  There are probably other things I want to add in before that happens so it's probably best that they are separate.  If you have setup 0.6 to run fah automatically just hit Alt + F2 and log in again and run the setup stuff but don't run the 'start_folding' script since fah should already be running.  To make sure the cron jobs run you can run 'crond' after you complete the setup stuff.  crond is the cron daemon (it's like a Windows service) which is responsible for running everything that has been added using crontab (one of the setup scripts gets that ready).

If you fold using a ramdrive make sure that you are backing up the work files since you'll loose your work unit if you reboot the VM.

I set it all up the same way I set up 0.4 and it seems to be working ok, but there's no unitinfo.txt file anywhere to be seen.   Is that going to cause a problem  if I have to stop vmware at anypoint and then re-start  or run from a back up?

It shouldn't cause any problems.  There might be an error message but it'll be piped to null (into space) so you wouldn't see it.

If it does cause problems you'll want to open the crontab txt file and remove that part of the copy for each hour.  To make the changes reflect in the cron jobs you would have to then run 'crontab -r' which will remove the old jobs then run 'crontab crontab.txt' which will add in the new cron jobs with your changes.  You might need to stop the cron daemon and start it back up again using 'crond stop' and 'crond start'.  There might be a 'crond restart' .... I forget.

i set up a torrent of 0.6 and hosted the .torrent file at drop.io.    im pretty good at leaving utorrent open on my i7 since its folding its on 24/7 any ways. if you  guys want to download it from there instead of putting a load on his server and once we get a few good seeders on it should download pretty fast. :)

Hey LR, How ya doing? Hope everything is well with you.
I finally upgraded from v0.1 to v0.6 seems to be working well. I had some problems with network, but got it going. seems to be doing well.
got a question for ya what does the option tear's Langouste de-coupler on boot do?
and as usual well done on all the hard work you've done. My oveclocked GPU's thank you ;)

Re:VMWare 3.0 && bigadv folding (Image available for testing) 2010/01/02 11:21:34 (permalink)
All rights I got 0.6 up and running, folding the normal 1920 point WUs. I got a final question. Is this like the Notfred client where if I shut down the VMware, the folding progress will automatically start from the last checkpoint? Reason being is that I shut my computer off at night.

@linux. Thanks for answering my questions earlier. I saw on the first page, first post that most of my questions had already been answered.

i set up a torrent of 0.6 and hosted the .torrent file at drop.io.    im pretty good at leaving utorrent open on my i7 since its folding its on 24/7 any ways. if you  guys want to download it from there instead of putting a load on his server and once we get a few good seeders on it should download pretty fast. :)

When I get home I'll help by downloading from here and leaving it open for seeding.

If you have noticed that the time from completing a workunit to starting a new one is long this should reduce the time.  I haven't used it yet but my understanding is upon completion the workunit is copied to a temp location and uploaded.  While the upload occurs a new WU is downloading and started.  Before the upload and download were scheduled serially so it cut into your daily throughput since it can take a while to upload.

By the way does anyone know why Tear called it "Langouste"?  My google translate tells me that means "spiny lobster" lol!
