Hey guys,

Just completed my custom loop and after hours of leak testing it was time to install W10 and fire up a game. First game I decided to play was Just Cause 3. I have EVGA Precision OCX installed and have enabled OSD to monitor stats while in-game. I have 2 1080s in the system but am only running 1 at the moment while waiting for the EVGA HB sli bridge to come in stock.

The first thing I noticed is once I got in the game menu where my fps is locked to 165 with vsync as that is the refresh rate of my monitor, is the epic amount of coil whine? It was quite loud tbh, and I have a case with sound deadening and damn near silent pump/fan combo. Once I got in-game, the coil whine went down to almost inaudible levels. The fps in-game was around 100 with a few dips up and down.

Now does that mean that I can't play games at 165fps as the GPU will wine like hell or could it be that game only ? I found a massive topic about coil whine issues on the 1080s on OCN and it looks like it's luck of the draw when it comes to cards. Some barely have it, some have it really bad and some are in between. Mine is probably not as bad as some out there but because I built this system for silence this has really put me off...

I will try and get a video up soon.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Xeqtr, if you dont mind me asking what silent pump/fan combo do you have? I was gonna do a custom loop myself and I want silence has well :0. Has for the coil whine you'll hear it in high fps, in game only. Crysis is good example of SEVERE coil whiner, try Crysis 1 both the menu and in game. The menu is worst with it's extreme high FPS. Has for getting a card without coil whine, I heard more power phases help, but usually it's the quality of the Inductors not the number of them :(, so maybe shooting for custom card which usually have better quality Inductors then the reference pcb.

Pump is EK D5 G2 PWM running at 60%, Fans are Noiseblocker BlackSilentPros PWM running at 800-1000rpm. Can't hear anything but the stupid coil whine. It happens in games where I get 165fps like Doom running in Vulkan. And its not to do with the custom PCB, I had a 980 classified which coil whined really bad and both of my 980ti Hybrids were perfectly fine. I ll see how bad the second card is and if they are both terrible i ll send back and get a Titan X combo.

Anybody? I'm pretty sure most people with 1080s have some sort of coil whine according to most of Reddit and OCN.

    Hello,
I just bought 2x GTX 1080 superclocked, and I have the same problem.
I also have EX D5 pWM pump, and my Noctua fans are running at 600 RPM.

As soon as my card load, coil whine is kinda loud. If I set in game graphic settings to low, and I set low resolution, coil whine is gone.

Before this, I used 2x gtX 980 Gigabyte reference model, so I decided to re test the same game with 2x gtx 980 ,and coil whine is much less, can barely hear it.

Yep tested my 980ti's and no coil whine what so ever unless i put my ear literally next to the card and even then it's hard to hear. Let alone when the case is closed and fans are on.

This is extremely annoying... Could it be something with the 1000 series gpu's having it a lot worse? Didn't see this many complaints on the 900 series.

I will make this short and sweet, I ownes 4 1080 gtx cards and all of them had coil whine.

    MSI 1080 gtx gaming X
    Gigabyte 1080 gtx xtreme
    Zotac Amp extreme 1080 gtx
And lastly two 1080 gtx FTW from evga.

All of them had coil whine. The MSI gaming X had the least amount of coil whine.

Before anyone starts blaming my psu I've used 3 different psu and all generated GPU coil whine.
The psu were the g2 850w and the p2 850w from evga. I also tried the antec 850 semi modular psu and that didn't help either.

In my opinion none of these companies tested their cards for coil whine.

I will be getting in touch with evga soon because I also have a system that was build around quietness and my video card coil whine being more audible than the system and the fans is really bugging me to the point where I might just try a different brand like MSI again because their coil whine was not as bad as the evga card.

    LCD Monitor: ASUS 144Hz 24"
    CPU: Intel i5-6600k
Graphics card: Asus Rog 1080 GTX
CPU Case: Corsair Mastercase Maker 5
    CPU Cooler: H100i V2
Motherboard model: Asus Maximus Hero VIII
Operating system: Microsoft Windows 10 PRO
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LED 32GB 3200 MHz
    SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB / OCZ 120GB / CRUCIAL 250GB

Yeah I heard MSI had the least but I like EVGA cards. I am tempted to get the Titan XP if it has less/no coil whine, but it is a lot pricier and getting 2 will definitely be a blow to the wallet.

I am using an EVGA 1000 P2 PSU.

1080SC here.Have coil whine in high demanding games but it becomes quieter as I keep playing.Pretty sure at least half 1080's on the market have coil whine but I'd take it anyday over the stock card with the loud blower+coil whine.

My EVGA GTX 1080 FE does have coil whine. Already switched between 5 GTX 970 in the past and they all had it.

My 1080 FTW has coil whine, but it's not bad. It's not noticeable at 150fps (ear has to be up to the case), but gets louder as the fps go up. In some menu's with really high fps it becomes very noticeable. However, I normally run G-Sync at 100HZ so I never hear it. I turned G-Sync off and ran benchmarks to test for coil whine.

My 1070 has coil whine as well. It's super annoying. Sounds like screeching. Can hear it over my speakers. Was thinking of getting it replaced but I may be screwed from what I'm reading? Yippee

I play with 165hz Gsync locked screen and even when it is not that high (sometimes just in the 100-110 mark) I can hear it.. and even worse when there is 2 of those cards in there...

My case is very good with sound proofing so I don't know...i will add some more i think to the back of it. I can RMA them and hope to get quieter ones but getting the waterblocks off and so on is just long lol
