Upgrading Evga Geforce GT 430 in older PC . I don’t play games just for video and picture editing  so I was looking at the
       GT 730 128 bit GDRR5 1 GT   low profile    40 GBs 01G-P3-3731-KR
but I’ve just seen a comment online that Fermi based systems like mine might not run GDDR5 as the H67 chips are not compatible.
Is that true?  Would I be better to consider a DDR3 based version of the GT 730 with a lower bandwidth like
        GT 730 128 bit DDR3 2 GB 22.4 GB/s 02G-P3-2738-KR
        GT 730 128 bit DDR3 2 GB low profile 22.4 GB/s 02G-P3-2732-KR

Thanks Thomi2

Should have added my System info

• i7 -2600 cpu quad core hyper threading
• Asus P8H67M-Pro CSM Rev 3 Mother Board
• 16 Gb DDR3 Ram
• SSD System Drive
• open single PCIe 2.0 X 16 slot (but I can use a dual with card as the next PCI slot is unused)
• Cooler Master: Extreme Power Plus 500W with split rail 18 A +12v-1 and 18A +12v-2

Found 5 users running a 730 with that same motherboard. 4 of them were running the DDR3 version. One was running the GDDR5 version. Looks like either one will work just fine. Just make sure your motherboard bios is completely up to date before installing either one.

Thank you Sajin,

OK Based on specs the GDDR5 has a greater memory bandwidth 40.5 GB/s vs 22.4 GB/s for the DDR3 version.  so I now feel comfortable ordering.  Oddly I find it is also a couple of dollars cheaper than the slower DDR3.     When I went and looked at the Asus download site I see that I was running running v3806 Bios and v 3904 is actually for compatibility updates for PCIE Devices.  I would not have thought of doing the update first so could possibly have run into problems. Thanks I will try to flash my Bios today.

Your help is much appreciated,

No problem. Let me know how it goes when you get the new card.

Hi Sajin,
Just flashed my bios to v3904 and all went well. Back on line now just waiting for shipment of my new card.  Yes I'll let you know.  Certainly my boot is a bit faster (that's good).

In going though the bios settings I did not notice one setting before and I don't know which option to choose.  The "Interrupt 19 capture : enable/disabled.  The Easy Mode - after set to default setting showed up in the advanced mode as  disabled.    I've looked and seen some said set to enabled other to disabled. Any suggestions on how I can determine which is correct?

Cool GTX
This is my experience with the 730 and an older Dell

Thank you Cool GTX.
Reviewed your experience and glad it was easy.  Hopefully mine will work just the same.  Plug & Play is good!

I'd set it to enabled. http://archive.techarp.co...l?lang=0&bogno=290

I'd set it to enabled.

Just set it to enabled and I see I can now label a CMOS profile.  I could not when it was disabled so interrupt 19 must affect the keyboard as well.  Now waiting till 13th for delivery of card.
Till then,
Thank you for all your help

Hi Sajin,
Thanks for all your help.  New graphics card received, installed and now up and running well.  About 4 times the memory bandwith of my old card so more than adequate for my photo and video editing.

Glad you suggested the Bios update as a pre-requisite prior to installing the new card. I was a bit concerned about 'playing' with the bios but using the Asus Ez Flash 2 tool in the bios it went quickly and smoothly and I didn't have to worry about renaming as the Asus Website provided the correct *.rom file format.

(I'm including the following not for you Sajin, I assume you know all this but rather for anyone else that follows this thread in the future and is as clueless as I was)

I did have some difficulty getting the new GT 730 to work, had about 3 attempts to install the board and boot.  It would just hang at the Bios screen and wouldn't even repond to my Del key to enter the bios.  I had to do a few things:
  • put the old card in so I could boot into windows then delete all old Nvidia video drivers for my last card. Then shut down,
  • re-inserted the new GT 730 graphic card carefully to ensure it was fully inserted
  • I was then able to enter into the bios settings
  • reset the bios ( I took the opportunity to replace the bios battery as it was 8 years old so just removed the old battery and waited a minute before installing a new one) that reset it
  • again rebooted into the bios set date/time and set everything else to default settings
  • then booted into Windows & installed the Nvidia driver & tools from the supplied CD that came with the GT 730 & configured the new card to my desired screen resolution and other settings
  • Rebooted back into the bios and readjusted the performance setting from default to best performance.
  • This time upon boot into Windows 10 the new card in fully functional.
Nice to have this forum and people who are will to take the time to share their knowledge.

Much appreciated.
