Would be a waste since no hardware can produce those framerates on modern games.

    4k resolution is silly.

4k is a luxury I can't afford and my eyes can't see. I don't think hardware can support it right now until Volta ti comes along and that's only a maybe.

You mean when DP1.4 is available on displays. U will wanna wait til the end of this year at the very least when oled and led versions of HDR displays begin launching

A pair of GTX 1080's in SLI could get you around 70-100FPS @ 4K in most of the latest titles. Still too early to really put money into a high refresh rate 4K monitor. Maybe later this year when the full version of pascal comes out.

i heard horror stories about asus' customer service so i steered clear of them when purchasing a gaming monitor, i.e. pg279q.

I went with acer in the end, picking up a xb271hu. This thing has everything i need.

    • its an IPS panel,  which some love, some hate. I Find it to be great. You need to tinker with the gamma/color settings to get the colors right out of the box. There is little "black light bleed" which is the bleeding of light on a truly black screen, around the corners. I find it negligible.
    • 144hz refresh rate, overclockable to 165hz, which is way more than you will ever need, I personally leave mine at 144hz.
    • 2560 x 1440 native/maximum resolution is, in my opinion, the sweet spot for computer monitors. Has a high enough pixel density to truly get an immersive feel in games.
    • The only downside to this monitor, it has a 4ms response time. If you are a super duper hardcore FPS gamer thats been gaming on 1ms screens for your whole life, you probably won't be able to tell the difference. I like playing cs competitively, and i don't have a problem.
    • 27" of glorious screen
    • GSYNC. Need I say more about that?

Ultra wide, from what i hear, has bad scaling issues with games. its good for everyday work, such as coding, video editing, and whatever you'd need to do with a lot of screen real estate. But for games, not so much. If you need screen real estate, just get a second, or third, monitor?

4k is a gimmick. I have a dell laptop that is a native 4k resolution, which when scaled to 4k, everything is so darn small its pointless. to have it at that high of a resolution is a nuisance. Gaming in 4k requires a lot of beefy hardware, which can get pricey.

    thats my 2 cents though.

i just pray my GTX760 can produce enough framerate with full eye candy for my 2560x1600 monitor (4Mp screen)...  much less for 4k...

4k? (8.8MP) insanity!! no gfx out there for those demanding amount of pixels with full eye candy.....

and so you know.. sharp already has a 8K tv Screen since last year.....  7,680 x 4,320 res... ( 33,1 Mp screen...)

Not sure what resolution you're on, but I ran some tests on my own with DSR, and there is for sure a difference. I also wasn't sure if I noticed a dramatic increase in color depth as well, but there is a difference to some magnitude. You should try it too. Images were crisper, objects stood out more. So, with that said, I'll be keeping my eyes on 4K monitors at the end of the year.

I'm ready for a full round house of upgrades. But with Gsync and Freesync tacking on a premium, I'd rather have a monitor without it.
For the money I'll throw at this upgrade it's not worth it in my humble opinion.
4k is not in the books for me as it's in infancy.
3440x1440 DSR on the other hand. Hmm seems a little delish to me.
I just want a straight up curved 3440x1440 @ 144hz without the bs.
