I think we are still at least 8 years before a laptop can game as well as a Desktop.
Comparing the 970M to the 970 was to far apart to say that that 1070m and 1070 would have or provide the same FPS.
Then you have to look at the LCD on the laptop and how many users connect a bigger external LCD for regular use.

Nope and it won't ever be.

Desktop is cheaper and will always have more and better options.

It just reminds us of the naming games have been done so long that when they actually show parity that people are confused.

Besides, the 1080 GPU is not a true enthusiast level chip. It's a mid range for enthusiast pricing. The enthusiast level will be the ti and Titan.

If AMD had true competition the naming and pricing would be quite different.

the 1080 GPU... It's a mid range for enthusiast pricing.

    Bingo sir.

If we had serious competition right now the GTX 1080 would actually probably be a GTX 1060 and cost $250.

Yes, but you don't need an enthusiast level card to play a game at 60FPS on a 1080p/1440p screen.
I have a laptop with an i7-4810MQ and a GTX870M. About CPU, the thing is  using its boost clocks all the way when gaming (3.6Ghz, Haswell architecture). At that speed, I think this CPU has better IPC than my i7-3930k at 4Ghz only because architecture enhancements.
It's true that if my gaming computer had a desktop haswell chip (in this case), the laptop CPU will be a bit slow compared to that, but if the GPU side will be the same, we can say that a gaming laptop will be only around 5% to 8% more slow that the desktop counterpart and that is great news.

On the other side, for the same gaming performance, you will be paying more than double if you go "mobile" so a desktop will be the way to go if you like the "cheap" upgradeability compared to a laptop and if you don't need the "mobile" part of the equation. Only my .2

Agreed 100%. Laptops for gaming will always be that expensive.

And as they always say, what you buy in a laptop is what you get, and that's it.

I don't see mobile catching up to desktop anytime soon.  Laptops never carry the big brother GPUs (GK110, GM200, GP102, etc.), and most likely won't for the foreseeable future.  The best laptops can do is 2 cut-down mid-range GPUs.  Anything you can put inside a laptop, you can put inside a desktop, not vice versa.

    a laptop?

are you kidding?  that tiny screen thing that heats up like a potato and burns out battery in a few hours?

laptops were made for 1 thing...  mobility!

sure they can have nice gfx chips... and play new titles with 1080p res but... but.. no way they can equal a updated desktop.  and those batteries? they will drain fast at high performance mode for gaming...
so...  no the answer is.. not yet!

Maybe in a few years when you can combine a laptop with True VR it might make sense to do away with desktops.
