Yeah, finished up the 500 series overclocking section at last.

Until the website settles down and is working better, updating is going to be slow.
Nothing like spending 2 hours typing and linking pics.. then "Opps something went wrong" and its gone.
Quite frustrating... I killed one keyboard over this already

I could see how that would happen. I get pissed when I lose a couple paragraphs...You ought to get a couple cheapie wireless KB's, that way you don't slam fists into a $100+ mech gamer.
I grew up not far from you in Sunnyvale, around the same timeframe, (I'm 50). Worked with the Steve's for 2 years at Apple in Cupertino, not long after they started, but at the time was more interested in Santa Cruz, Beach Bunnies, and partying. Still kicking myself for not sticking with it...Such is Life, Eh?

I never really thought about turning off Startup at windows start in Precision X when I install drivers but then I only use X to set my fan to 50%. or to check if a game is down clocking.

Though I will start doing that. Even thought I never noticed and issues

BTW this should be sticky even if it not finished

Re:Ultimate Nvidia Driver Install Guide by MANIAC-VVV- 2013/07/13 15:19:56 (permalink)
I got a bit of a problem.

I used RT7 to build a custom stripped Win7 install, following this guide: http://www.overclock.net/...tall-disc-for-benching

Everything went well including the OS and driver installation, other than the drivers for my GTX680s. I dl'd 320.49-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-english-whql from nvidia, but when I go to install, it wants an internet connection. I noticed Networking was on the list of services to remove in the guide. I installed my LAN driver, but still no internet because of the stripping.
I managed to get the driver installed, but cant get NCP to install. And if it did, I cant find it.

Any work arounds getting NCP installed? OS = Win7 Pro 64.

EDIT: In an attempt to install NCP, I ran NVCPLSetupInt.exe from where the driver was extracted. Nothing happens. The Physics driver seemed to install ok.

For what purpose are you running the OS in this fashion?
OS overhead loading is quite minimal in Win 7 and 0% CPU use is quite easy to achieve.
Such extreme removal measures leaves your system dysfunctional

I Imagine the error is related to having disabled a needed OS service/component
Its asking for the internet so it can download and install what its looking for....

320.49 has the new installer...
Are you doing a Custom Mode with Graphics driver and PhysX -ONLY-?

Lets see "why" your running the OS like that and what driver install method you are using

Thanks for reply Maniac.

I stripped the OS with RT7 lite for running benchmarks. I followed the guide in link above precisely. Apparently there were a few services I shouldnt have removed.

I dont need the networking. I only wanted it to get nvidia drivers installed.

I installed chipset and sata drivers normally. The nvidia driver would not install without internet. So I went to Device Manager and udated driver by directing it to where nvidia files were extracted (c:\nvidia). I installed the physics driver by going to extracted files and running physx installer. As far as I can tell, it installed. I tried the same method to install NCP, but installer does nothing.

Wipe the OS and start over
If Benching is your goal, you have trashed the registry -already-

Your biggest mistake with the "stripping thread" was not paying attention to "who" was posting, "when" it was posted and you did NOT read the 5th post by the OP about how he was too "busy" to post a comparision benchmark with a regular OS vs stripped.....

If your running a high end rig with SLI, there is very very little to be gained by running the OS that stripped...
Like "maybe" 1-2%, when of course just 25mhz faster on your CPU could give you the same gain
There are many other tricks like running with just one stick of RAM, that can give you 5% for graphics benchmarks

"Stripping" used to be "the" thing.... like 5-10 years ago when memory was tight and quite slow
--->and single/dual cores were what was available, thats just not the case anymore
With todays hardware, about the only thing needed is to disable the print spooler, font loading and windows search function and of course only ONE HD (on the chipset native port) one PS2 keyboard (with only win default driver), USB mouse (win default driver) and (2) RAM sticks max... with NOTHING else attached to the computer except for the monitor.

I suggest you do a normal default Win7 install (-completely- updated) and bench
THEN---> "selectively" disable/set to manual OS services and bench again at each step until the OS is non functional for benching...
You will find the gains from a "massive strip" like described are very very small indeed
*networking -must- be enabled in the OS for SLI setups. For "stripping" you would simply disable your NICs...

For reference:  Next time do NOT use device manager and NEVER run individual Nvidia installer components
-ALWAYS- use CUSTOM Mode, with only the Graphics driver and PhysX checked
*you did NOT post what type of install method you used, or what components you had checked

Re:Ultimate Nvidia Driver Install Guide by MANIAC-VVV- 2013/07/14 05:35:27 (permalink)
Oh trust me, I am fabbing up a new RT7 install as I type. That was my first venture into stripping. Lesson learned. Now, would I recommend following the guide as to what services to remove? No. Would I recommend the guide to use RT7 to make a custom install? Yes. It was very intuitive and painless.
I only used that links method because google told me so. I am not a member there. It was the most mentioned. And after reading it, seemed straight forward, which it was.
The biggest reason I went to a stripped OS is I dont want to mess around with my day to day OS install. Rather, I wanted a stripped install strictly for benching on another SSD. It is bad enough I am benching on my main rig to begin with.
Dont need network services, security, ......... or much of anything. It will never be connected to a network while benching with that drive. So why not strip it out? I bought race gas (U4.4) at $7/L for my son's dirtbike when he was racing. It had about the same or a bit more gain. Same thing. Every bit counts with the particular benchmark I am running. Same as trying to shave weight off his bike. You want to check the stability of a CPU or memory overclock? Use ROG Realbench. It will kick the dogchit out of your mem and cpu. A very 'realworld' sub-system benchmark/stress test.
Well, just got results. Stripped OS install did yield higher score than full blown install.
I am going to make a modified install (RT7) with a few updates, and then do as you mentioned. Disable the desired services within Win7.

As far as how I installed the nvidia drivers, I mentioned that above in other post.

As far as NCP, goes, any way to install it standalone?

Anyways, thanks for info, appreciated.

And as soon as I have a second 680 (for SLI) I will be working on the 600 overclocking guide

Amazing amount of useful info, thanks.... particularly looking forward to your 680 Sli run down, unfortunately I'm having some issues with my own Sli setup so I'm waiting with bated breath,

Thanks for this amazing topic, heck you should get a Blue Ribbon for each part, such guides are rare on the internet these days

Thanks again maniacvvv for this amazing guide.

I recently did a windows 7 repair using the Upgrade option along with an .iso I burned of Windows 7 that included SP1. Long story short, everything went fine until I got to the driver for my 570. Eventually, I got Windows to install the latest version of the Nvidia driver, but not after I spent a good part of a day trying to do so, and it installed everything, something I didn't want.

The strange thing about the Windows installation was no Nvidia software was listed in "Programs and Features"...very strange. Something just didn't feel right about the installation, even though all of the files seemed to be in the right place.

After doing some online searching I found a link to this guide. I know well your guide posted in the 500 section and have followed it in the past, but it seems that it has run its course. Using your quick guide (I watched the video) has set everything in order. Your current guide is a bit hidden, but I'm very happy I found it, and that rjohnson11 included it.

I hear you on video game playing addiction. I'm sure I'm in the same boat, although I don't have the same family responsibilities you have, it can still affect the personal life. Fortunately I don't gamble...at least not in the big sense.

I'm 62 years old and when I was discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1972 I found myself living in San Jose because I had a friend living there who owned a bike shop. I had a chance to take a job in the tech industry at that time, but was more interested in just having fun. I kind of regret not taking that job as I probably would have gotten more involved with computers.

It is only many years later that I discovered computers and have become addicted.

I think I would have liked being a detective, as I always enjoy solving computer problems.

Honestly driver installs are not this complicated, you may scare people with making it look like you need to read 20 sheets of data first........
The only step you need to take outside of what the Nvidia installer does, is delete the old Nvidia driver folder, that's it all the other steps he lists are pointless and a waste. On top of it, your still using Afterburner......without K-boost??

Just curious. Replacing 550 ti using driver 285.62 with 750 ti. Do I update driver then install 750, or install 750 then update. I guess third option would be uninstall old driver install card then update driver, though I know your guide would suggest not to do that.
