Hey all. I don't post too much on these forums but I have had this issue in the past and attributed it to power issues on the USB bus (I have no proof just a guess.). Every time I plugged in a USB device I would loose my keyboard and mouse and sometimes they would not show up after a cold boot. I since purchased two of these a month ago and I have had no problems (so far). The only USB port that receive power from the motherboard are on the IO plate (Keyboard, powered external drives and printers). The only issue I have found is If I use these to connect my keyboard, I cannot get into the BIOS.
I don't know if this will solve the problems for everyone but, this is a great device none the less.

I guess if you were pulling a bunch of power from ports it may cause a problem,    but we max these ports out and havent had an issue,   unless maybe a device has a short or issue causing irregular power draw

your situation sounds quite simple.    your not dropping usb's at all,   windows is just losing ID with them.   and re connecting is re-initializing them.

Then why does the keyboard lights and mouse LED go out when it happens?

Main (gaming) rig: i7-3930K; Asus Rampage IV Extreme; H100 W/p-p Excaliburs, AS5; MSI 7870 2GD5/OC; Crucial M4 SSD 256GB.
See my primary ModsRigs: Adam for the rest, and I have a second (wife's) rig Asus Rampage III Extreme & 960: Eve.

Overclocking is useless to me if it is not rock stable.

windows could be putting them to sleep.   have you disabled that?    if you go into device manager go to every usb root hub and right click on it.   then under the power management tab you will see an option to stop windows from putting it to sleep
