Since you're running SLI, that's 6GB * 2 = 12GB.  The system's main RAM is also going to be shared with video processing - usually a percentage of the total system RAM.  You have 16GB, the system appears to be making 2GB of that available for video.
If it pleases the court, here's an old 2 min YouTube video on the subject: https://youtu.be/FE5aSqnZRBI

I'm going Occam's razor here - this memory model is a given with CPUs that have an iGPU but you're running x99, so that does seem a little strange to me but it is the simplest and most obvious explanation and therefore likely the most accurate.  :-)

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers,

That's what I am getting at. Why is my system allocating extra ram?

I'm a Z170 user, and it's been a while since I've dug in an x99 so I'm speaking from ignorance of what's available in BIOS and in your nvidia s/w - but...
Could there be/do you have any features turned on in BIOS or nvidia that would activate shared system memory?
(obvious, I know but it's usually that one overlooked obvious thing like a switch deep in a menu - or the one right in front of my face that I assume isn't there LOL that bites me when least expected)
    Strange, indeed...

    Cheers,

I am pretty sure it is a bug in DxDiag, and I think that is where Nvidia is getting the information from.  DxDiag appears to be calculating the ram that it thinks it would allocate if the video card was integrated in some cases, which goes back to the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shared_graphics_memory .  This amount of RAM also changes based on the amount of ram you have in your system.  Also chuckhawks yes he has 12GB from SLI, but if it is running in SLI he will only have 6GB of RAM because SLI mirrors the RAM.  Long story short, you have the amount of video memory that your card has.  If you are in SLI you still have the same as previously stated.  If you are folding then each card has that much ram, unless in SLI and no one folds in SLI anyway :).

Heatware: Trelor - I primarily use eBay which is attached to my heatware.

I think you are correct. Directx bug. When I run dxdiag it reports 2 extra gigs on display.

It seems normal to me, I think whats going on is the reserved system memory is added to the vram to make the total graphic memory amount. I have 32 gb of system ram and 12 gb of vram 16 gb of system memory being shared and it is added to the total graphic memory.

And... I just learned something again.  Thanks, Trelor!
