So what! you say- Well every member of my family on my father's side and my mother's side are or were teachers (with a few exceptions)
Even I taught Middle and High School for over ten years. My sister currently teaches special education and my parents are retired after putting in over 40 years each.
Enough about me and my family.

Teaching is sometimes a thankless job that requires a great deal of patience and work outside of the classroom. It still pays very little - My first job was at a Catholic High School in the late '80s. I taught all four grades and coached three sports for an annual income of $13,500. My insurance covered 50% of all costs. I went on to teach in the public system for a whopping $26,000 annual salary.
We have all had teachers, even if you were home schooled.

Thank a teacher if you get a chance!

I'll thank a teacher when they're not brainwashing kids to be liberals...teach HOW to think, not WHAT to think.

    Until then? Not inclined.

Thanks for the post. I had a number of teachers I did not like, but I never had a meeting as a teacher where I was told there was some political agenda that I had to force on my students while teaching physics, chemistry or biology. Just never happened. Sorry you had such a rotten experience.

I've had some good teachers but most of them are deceased or retired so I can't thank them. Most of my teachers were Nuns in grade school who were more interested in teaching me fairy tales about this Saint and that Saint, etc. The good teachers just gave me the basic building blocks and made me think to put all of the pieces together. Hats off to them!

I had a couple great teachers I will never forget. Had a couple real winners too.

Get paid very little? The teachers in my local public school district average over 100,000 dollars a year.
They retire with years worth of sick/vacation time on top of their pension and health insurance coverage.
My land and school taxes are driving me out of NY. Well that and the crazy gun and knife laws.
My taxes are low compared to some I know. Mine are over 500$ a month, my sister pays 1100$ a month.

That's a good chunk of change for a teacher. In Florida it takes 30 years to collect full retirement and you can cash out the sick/vacation time you do not use. Teachers making that much in Florida usually have a Doctorate degree and many years in the system. (or got an administrative position)
Things are not the same as when I was teaching. Toward the end of my stint the only focus was a mandated test called the FCAT. (not a fan)
My post wasn't to celebrate or put down the system. There are good schools and really bad ones as well teachers and districts and so on.
