Re: The Official Titan X and HYBRID Water Cooler (All in One) for GTX 980 Thread 2015/05/06 21:45:49 (permalink)
To Avenger, got my 780t and spent yesterday moving my rig into it.
Great case! Tons of room for the H110 and 2 evga aio coolers for the Titans.

Today I did the Titans. Spent an extra hour trying to figure out how to use the reference shroud without modifying it. This was after taking it apart and beginning to appreciate just how nicely it's made.
Beautiful cast metal pieces with high quality workmanship. If the pump had a 90 degree fitting I could run it straight out, but without that I would have to bend it so tightly that it would crimp and chafe the hoses. Luckily the backplates arrived today and I was able to put them on before the cooler. They are excellent for protection while taking the shroud off.
Used MX-4 thermal on them both.
Working great. Did a push/pull on both with a SP120 and an AF120. Pulling outside air in from the front (like Avengers setup with a 3rd intake fan above them).
Very impressed with the performance. My idle temps before were @56C (top) and @45C (bottom).
Idle temps are now @35C and @31C! This is with the fan speed on low (ran the fan power to the 780t controller). Putting the fans on high seems to make almost no change.
Under full load temps are @60C and @55C.
This is like a full 20 degree C drop in temps!
These temps are with a +227 OC on the core and a +451 OC on the memory and a power target of 110%. Completely stable for three weeks at these settings.

However, I miss the reference shrouds . So I'm thinking of taking a dremel to the reference ones to make them work with the hoses. I've measured it and the hoses will fit in the space directly above the led panel, so it should work with just 2 3/8 in. openings cut into the edge above the led strip and removing the clear panel for the heatsink.
As far as the fan wiring goes, there is an opening within the reference shroud that the connector fits thru (did a dry fit) without interfering with anything.
And after seeing the fabrication quality of the reference shrouds, something commensurate as a separate part would probably cost as much as the aio cooler itself. Or just be the plastic 980 one with a different paint job.

Hey!

Great man! Happy to see it works good in your setup! You got some pics of those backplate WITH AiO ? I'd like to see how it looks before ordering a backplate.

Thanks mate

Finally I have done the work for 1 Titan X with AIO cooler on Reference Frame.

It works as normal as EVGA Shorud and temp did not change. Never over 55 degree on max settings on game.

I have try on both EVGA shorud and Reference Shroud. It is good to see that reference frame fit perfectly fit and works.

Next job is change the case to Antec P380 which is arriving tomorrow..

Hey

Very nice! Thinking about doing the same right now.  Just pissed that i didn't think about it earlier. Now i have to re-seat block and remove shroud. Or i'll just do a custom paint job on the 980 hybrid shroud. We'll see.  Nonetheless , very nice!

Hey, my Corsair PWM fans came with a little resistor dongle thing-a-majig, will that slow down or speed up the fans?

Edit: my backplates and all my new fans came in the mail today. Will post more later, gotta run to airport now.

Backplates are great! Not quite the cast-iron monsters that came with stock 980s, but it'll do. Got a polished surface that my MB lights reflect nicely off of.
The Corsair SP120s are performing quite poorly on the AIO rads. I plugged them into fan headers on my MB, I may just need to crank them up. Any ideas?

Most of the time slow it down, never herd of one that speeds a fan up.

Got new fans and backplates today. The backplates seem to add a couple of degrees in some situations, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. They look nice and protect the PCB. Also, the polished surface reflects the illuminated "Republic of Gamers" logo, which is pretty cool. They're not quite the cast iron beasts that stock 980s came with, but it'll do.

Here's what I've got so far:

WITH Backplate:

Idle
GPU1: 30C
GPU2: 23C

Stock
GPU1 Max: 54C
GPU2 Max: 47C

+220
GPU1 Max: 57C
GPU2 Max: 50C

Radiators swapped (wanted to test theory that the front-mounted radiator was benefitting from the 140mm fans pushing air through the radiator)

Stock
GPU1 Max: 46C
GPU2 Max: 55C

+220
GPU1 Max: 49
GPU2 Max: 59

It would appear my theory was correct.

Backplate removed (radiators left in swapped position):

Stock
GPU1 Max: 44C
GPU2 Max: 55C

+220
GPU1 Max: 47C
GPU2 Max: 59C

Hey

Does the backplate comes with thermal cushings that are sitting on vram ? Also, About the sp120's, you probably got the "quiet edition" which is fine. Just go into your bios in q-fan control (f6) and put them at full speed. They don't do much sound when hitting full speed imo. OR you could always create a fan profile within q-fan that would follow your system temp. Also, resistors are, most of the time, made to "restrict" power to a given output.

Yes, there are thermal cushions. I did end up figuring out the part about fan control, all those numbers are with fans at full speed, and you're right, they're not bad in terms of noise.

Hey,

Yes indeed. In example, they state that SP120 (stock h100i fans) can get to 4mm/h20 but that is @2700rpm. Have you ever tried a SP120@2700RPM? Freakin jet takeoff straight in your room sooo SP120Led offer a 1.46mm/h20 (granted it's lower) BUT the sound is bearable and i feel it is on par with the performance efficiency (db vs mm/h20).

Anyways, thanks for the info about the backplate!

Using a 140mm Fan is useless on a 120mm Radiator, to much air pressure lost going through the Radiator.
When Testing with and without the Back Plate did you run for at least 1 Hour and take the average?
What a really good Temperature Test, Fold your GPUs that will heat them up and burn them in at the same time.
Up to 10 Hours or 3 hours on Core 15 and Ouch Hot Hot Hot.

@jeff

Hey,

I think some did but theres no no way to tell if it's effective or not so in the end i'd tell you to get the backplate since it's been made exactly for this purpose and the design is nice.

@bcav

Hey,

I think he meant putting a 140mm at the front of the case so the rad intake would get fresh air since his rad is close to the 140mm. Maybe i read wrong.

This was discussed in a couple of other threads.  A few people posted pictures of the generic sinks and the discussion between copper and aluminum and such.  Problem is that you have no way of knowing if it made a significant difference because we don't have an accurate way to measure. Once you add a sink you can't actually measure the heat on the VRAM anymore as the surface is now covered.  Temps on the sinks would not be the same because of surface area distribution and a difference in dissipation and they would theoretically be lower by default even if the VRAM surface was at the same temperature.  Theoretically, though, it would HAVE to be somewhat lower if you have a good thermal conductor between the two.  A poor conductive material could actually insulate it and hold in more heat.

You would need an internal sensor to be able to measure and I guess they stopped doing that as a whole a while ago.

What use is knowledge if there is no understanding?~Stobaeus

All my tests were Firestrike Extreme Graphics test 1 looped for 10 minutes. The graph had very much leveled off, I don't think an extra 50 minutes would have made any difference.

Also, I hear what you're saying about 140mm fan on a 120mm rad not doing much. I just noticed that whichever rad was sitting behind the AF140s up front did a lot better in terms of temps. Anyhow, my tests may not have been perfectly scientific, but they're as scientific as I care to make them at the moment

Got my titan x with the aio cooler installed. Never breaks 56c. Do my firestrike scores look low?

14k= normal 1080 (should be 17k)
8100 = extreme
4400 = Ultra

3770K @ 4.5ghz / ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Pro-M / 16gb DDR1600 Ripjaws / Corsair H100i / Corsair 350D / XB280HK 4k / EVGA GTX 980 soon to be Titan X

Just finished playing with my card stock cooler i have the super clocked version I was hitting 1480mhz on the core but i was hitting 109% power not sure i can go any higher on stock bios. I am also running a 4770k at 4.2ghz and i am getting 15940 roughly. i am also hitting temps of around 86C i also have my memory clocked up 200mhz as well

What is your overall system ?

Also based on my scores above should i even bother with a cooler ? I am running +151 gpu and +213mem on a superclocked hiting about 86c on load with a 112mv oc. The part i am worried about is i am hitting 109% power at that setup should i be worried about that ?

Hey,

Getting the AiO cooler will indeed help you overclock. You see, if you keep temperatures lower, you'll be able to increase voltage, which will give you more headroom for core mhz and memory mhz. If you get the cooler and do not increase voltage you won't achieve a higher overclock although your gpu will bu running silently and at only 48c-50c. My boost is a 1380mhz my card is not a strong overclocker. I chose not to fizzle around voltages since i feel like 100mhz+ of what i am right now would need 100-120mv and it isn't worth it. I prefer to keep the card cooler.

Hi Guys~~ I finally finished the job and also moved to my new Antec P380.

As you can see the radiator hose is short to fit on antec p380 since it is full tower case. So I end up using Vita Game Case to make it stand. It works Ok so far. I am going to make some radiator stand to fit them in the case.

Also for the performance

With TITAN reference shroud it does not made any change from EVGA shroud.

It stays under 50 degree for both card in GTA5. Max was 48 degree.

I did not overclock the card used as stock clock . Probably i will OC around 100 on clock in the future but until then 2 Titan X works perfectly on QHD gsync monitor.

So the only reason you don't bump up yours is temps ? Also any idea if a ek backplate would be better than the evga one ?

Hey,

No i do not bump my voltage because i don't feel it is worth it. Like i stated before, im a 1375mhz and i haven't touched memory clocks and i get a score of +\- 17k in firestrike. My temps never go beyond 47-48c (i have the 989 hybrid aio on my titan x) and i feel like this is enough for me. Anyways, modding a bios is out of the question for me. As for the backplate, i do not know. I haven't received mine (evga) so i can't comment on the build quality. From what i've heard EK products are quite good so it could be a safe bet thinking their implementation of the backplate might be better/more effective.
