Hi Folks!

So I currently have a ASUS PB287Q 28-Inch monitor right now and I want to get a 1440p IPS monitor as a comparison. Should I get one of the g-sync monitors that are available right now, or is there a monitor coming out soon that I should wait for? Assume price is not an issue here, I'm looking for the best quality I can get.

I have been viewing the Asus PG278Q Rog Swift, but I was wondering if there is going to be something new and exciting coming out from Asus or Acer soon?

Thanks in advance! :)

My PC Specs are currrently:
Asus Z97-Pro Mobo
i7 4790k clocked at 4.7ghz using tower cooler
32gb 1600mhz ddr3 ram
EVGA Titan X SC
240gb SSD

The Acer XB270HU is a 1440p 144hz IPS that was just released, if the monitor you get doesnt have any issues, it  beats the ASUS swift in terms of quality and color by a lot. But i think there are qual control issues atm with the monitor. But check it out, if you get it from someone with great return policies its def a better choice.

*edit   It does have g'sync as well.

You didn't state if 144Hz was a requirement.  If so, then the XB270HU that kernolsz28 recommended is currently your only option for 1440p IPS 144Hz.  I am torn to wanting the new Acer XR341CK at 3440X1440, 21:9 G-sync and IPS but only @75Hz due out in a few months.  My other thoughts were on the ROG Swift and XB270HU as well.

EDIT:  I should note that I have never owned anything above a 60Hz monitor, but I'm told I simply don't know what I am missing.  That has been a part of my indecision as I like the color profile from the IPS.

Before I got the Titan X and the 2160p capable monitor, my gaming experiences were on a 32 inch Samsung TV that displayed 1080p. I'm not sure on the specs of that TV, but it was over 5 years old. I have it in a dual monitor setup with my PB287Q and differences are incredible. Obviously the higher resolution is huge, but there are other things too that the monitor does better.

The issue is that the PB287Q is a TN panel and I really want to try out an IPS panel for the viewing angle, better color profile(I have been told IPS gives the best color quality) and of course the higher refresh rates that simply do not exist for 2160p monitors right now. Plus I have heard that G-sync makes everything smoother now. IPS has been touted as being better than TN panels in every category except response time, but a 4ms response time is pretty damn fast.

Looks like the XB270HU is the way to go. And to answer CoercionShamans question about 144hz, it's not a requirement since I don't think I'm going to be getting 144fps in 1440p with only one Titan X, but it wouldn't hurt to have it.

Currently, I agree it is the way to go for what you are looking for.  I do think the color quality is better.  I have both at home and just hooking the TN back up for a comparison had me turning it off before I ever got so far as to do a direct comparison.  It was that noticeable.  Again, I haven't seen the Swift and many say that the 8 bit panel is pretty good (for a twisted nematic).

Whatever you choose, please do the rest of us a favor and be sure to return with comments on your thoughts and usage.

And I agree about the 144 FPS on a single X, but many also say 90 FPS or 85 FPS is markedly better than 75Hz and especially better than 60Hz.  They also argue (reasonably) that the potential is at least still there for future benefit should the card be able to perform better with future software and drivers.  I wouldn't know from experience, though.

Coercion, the last question that you need to ask yourself is this : smooth gameplay or better graphics? There is not "both" right now.

well, 60fps is "smooth", but 144hz, is "smoother", much smoother.

Just do what I did. If you don't like 1080p, then go with 1440p 144hz. And then in a few years when they get 144hz 4k monitor going, get that .
I'll be honest with you.... 1080p 144hz on an LED monitor, doesn't look bad at all. It looks pretty good. The part that people forget is when you have a higher refresh rate, your pixel rating increases.

    Again, 4K... overrated.

Sad news everyone! I got my XB270HU and it's going to be returned. Massive cluster of dead pixels in the upper left hand corner. Wish me luck with my replacement in round 2!

In other news,  I did manage to play Dying Light a bit on the monitor and getting around 80 - 90 fps at 1440p was smooth as butter. Huge difference between that and 45 fps at 2160p.

That doesn't make any sense, you have a 2160p monitor, which is a better resolution than 1440p, and you're getting 45fps with a Titan X? I'm only asking because it sounds like you're going in reverse with a Titan...?

Did you try the eraser trick?  Or run a pixel stuck program?  Several people have reported that working for them on the dead pixels.

He can run and try those programs and in many cases this can fix some pixels but if the pixels are in a large grouping on one side of the monitor it may not work.

Did you try the eraser trick?  Or run a pixel stuck program?  Several people have reported that working for them on the dead pixels.

He can run and try those programs and in many cases this can fix some pixels but if the pixels are in a large grouping on one side of the monitor it may not work.

Very true, but worth trying in my opinion.  If it works, it means he doesn't have to send it back and wait.  If it doesn't, well, he was sending it back anyway.

Re: Titan X - What 1440p monitor would you recommend? 2015/05/01 07:42:14 (permalink)
Stalinx: To answer your question of what I'm trying to do is simple. I basically want a really nice 1440p monitor for when the 2160p monitor results in unplayable framerates. Down-scaling to 1440p is an option on the 2160p monitor, but it's only a 60hz monitor. I wanted an IPS monitor with G-Sync and 144hz. That's why I went with the XB270HU. Yes, I am getting 45fps in dying light, but the game is MUCH smoother at 90fps. It will be really interesting to see what frame-rates I get on the Witcher 3.

With regards to pixel tricks, that wasn't an option. This was essentially a cluster/tear of dead pixels. We are talking about 10 or 20 dead pixels in the same area that you could see from about 3 feet away. There was also 1 dead pixel much further down on the screen in the lower left that I didn't notice until I started inspecting the whole thing. When I spend $800 on a monitor, I expect it to be perfect out of the box.

Alpha - The color is amazing out of the box. I haven't calibrated it yet because this one is getting replaced, but the screen is much brighter and vibrant than the PB287Q which makes sense because the PB287Q can go up to 300 cd/㎡ and the XB270HU can go up to 350 cd/㎡. You can also tell immediately the difference between the IPS and TN panel from the viewing angles.

Finally, with regards to the difference between 2160p and 1440p, I would agree with Stalinx that the difference is negligible in terms of quality of picture at 2-3 feet for a 27 inch monitor. It would probably make more of an impact on a 35 inch or higher, but right now the smooth-ness of the 1440p g-sync monitor is winning me over in the FPS.

Also note that I have played non-fps games too like Heroes of the Storm with max settings. I was getting around 110fps on the 1440p and a solid 60fps on the 2160p. I would take the 2160p monitor in this situation.

When I get the replacement Monitor, I will let you know what I think of games like Diablo 3, which looks INSANE in 4k max settings at 60fps.

This is exactly where I'm at sir! I was thinking right along your path, why get that higher resolution to sacrifice framerate?

I pulled the trigger and ordered the XB270HU.  We will see if the lottery is good to me and if I am impressed otherwise.  It should be here on Wednesday, I believe.

    Good Luck Shaman!!!

I am shipping mine back tomorrow to Newegg. I signed up for premier JUST for this product. It cost $20 up front for 3 months, but it's saved me $10 in shipping and $37 in return shipping so far. Wish me luck with my replacement.

I have premier as well.  It has been good to me in just shipping, but this purchase would help this situation a great deal as you pointed out, especially with the restocking fee if I am not happy.

Good luck on your next one.

Mine comes in today.  It is out for delivery as I type.  I saw your review on the Egg.  I am hoping to be one of the folks who talk about being lucky and getting a 'perfect' monitor.

I have the ASUS MX27AQ and love it.  Admittedly it's only 60Hz and doesn't have G-Sync but it's brilliant.  Makes GTAV look beautiful :D

Yeah, I felt bad about giving it a 1 star review, but in my opinion when you spend $800 on a monitor, you shouldn't have even 1 dead pixel, let alone clusters of dead pixels. Acer really needs to get their QA on this issue.

trawet - the MX27AQ has a really nice look to it! G-sync is really nice from my limited experience with it so far. Much smoother gameplay. I'm comparing a 60hz TN 2160p panel to the 1440p 144hz g-sync IPS panel when I say smoother.

I'm really looking forward to hearing what fps and resolutions people are playing Witcher 3 at. I'm crossing my fingers that I will get playable frame-rates on my 2160p.

Totally agree with you that it should be flawless.  The Rog Swift had tons of issues, too.  You would think they would have someone right on top of this knowing how popular it would be and at such a price.

Truck is still out for delivery.  I am going to run home as soon as it shows delivered.  Probably won't be here until 2000 tonight with my luck, though.

Really hoping I get a good one on the first try.

I chose to take a shot at Acer for this reason here, seeing how many people had problems with Asus.
