I know this falls under voiding your warranty but...

Has anyone converted their card to a single slot?  Meaning if you water cool the adjacent slot is wasted.  The dual DVI ports are stacked so one cannot just fit a single bracket.

However if you remove (desolder) the double DVI connector and just install a single you could indeed have a single slot solution.

This would free up a lot of valuable slots for add on cards, for example.

Anyone try this?

Actually with proper solder work equipment this would be a piece of cake!
I wish nvidia would go the AMD route with the connectors and use a single DVI and DP for the rest...

Single slot WC cards are great especially for those using compute and want to put 6 or more in a system.

I love single slot as well.

Also, as this may be of interest to you. I recently upgraded to the Dell u3014 (wicked screen!) and the first time I plugged it into the DVI-I slot and it worked fine at 2560x1600 lol (?) I think my dvi-d KVM took care of it, but either way odd.

You are correct and this would void the warranty but if someone is spending that much money on a video card then water cooling would be a suggested route which doesn't void your warranty so long as you don't damage the card and retain the original parts.

No way! Some of us have Nvidia surround with monitors with only DVI inputs. I need the second DVI.

They should go to single slot 2 DVIs and a single DP. No need for both HDMI and DP. If you need HDMI you can use an adapter for one of the DVI ports. I'd rather have dual link DVI over HDMI anyway.

Even since nVidia introduced Kepler with forced dual-slot with Kepler, such a thought as removing the dual DVI ports has crossed my mind many times, and I would probably go though with it because I **hate** dual-slot or "big" in general.  Size matters, sure, but I'd rather go the other direction and not sacrifice performance, so it would take more creativity and effort than to do what works like everyone else.

I don't think removing the dual-DVI will damage the card, per se.  I'd recommend experimenting with DVI connector transfers with cheap low-end cards until you get near-perfect by the time you get to messing with a Titan.  Removing the dual slot DVI from Kepler cards would just require a kind of scaffolding for the card and multi-pin heater elements to get all the DVI contact points at once so the DVI assembly can be wiggled out and still keep most of the solder in place.  I'd then transplant it with a DVI from an old 7950GT or GTX260.  The DVI plug itself hasn't really changed that much, the only thing I'd be concerned with is if the spec somehow change from DVI-D to DVI-I, but I don't think the display controller is too close to the DVI solder points.

I do not think you are going to see to many people voiding the warranty on a $1000 dollar video card to convert it to a single slot.

I have successfully done this and punched my own single slot bracket as well. I even took the liberty of integrating and drilling custom LED's into the xspc waterblocks and integrating the lighting so it is controllable from the computer through the card with the evga LED tool. If the card is uninstalled, everything comes with it. NO molex headers or other ugly solutions that cause headaches and cable clutter. I currently have one system running 8 water cooled Titans on two loops on an msi big bang. I am not made of money so needless to say it is being shipped to the to the guy who paid me to do it. Look for mcconnect15 on ebay soon as I will be selling the complete kit and finished cards among other goodies. PM me if you would like pics!

Think there is a resolution limitation there however when you use DMS.

I am unable to post PM's, but someone asked the following:

Also, are you including back plates with the XSPC blocks: This option is a yes, but delays from xspc may delay the whole thing. I don't have measurements with regard to clearence, but I trust xspc to have it to spec without issue.

Can the LEDs on the block be white? Yep! They can be any color, even UV.

When are you going to be finished and are planning on selling them? These may be selling as a kit or fully completed (with an option to send them to me and I do the mod for you with proper escrow channels etc.)

I will keep you all updated!

Thanks for the questions. Once I get 5 posts I guess it will let me PM. I have the ability to make these brackets in gloss black (mine are actually flat black since its awesome to match my case) but I can definitely do any color. I am not sure how well the paint will hold up, but I use unplated metal brackets  that are primed so it seems to hold up well so far. I can get the metal plated and that would hold up like normal.

I assume you are talking about the x79 big bang at which point I have to ask how you are running 8 cards on a mobo that only has 7 pcie slots.

No pictures so I really don't believe it.

Seems like a waste since 4 of the slots run at PCIe 2.0 x1.

I would also say that sticking with older cpu types would be a waste as well in this case, but the benefits outweighed the options. One would think using x1 slots for any high-end card would be a joke. I would have thought the same initially if his wish were to game at 1000 fps with this on some magical 32k monitor and have an amazing 8 card sli bridge appear or something lol. Again, not a waste when compute clustering is involved, but I like your thinkin.  When you have lots of $$$ being exchanged, and failing external solutions, you don't tend to think up ways to fail the customer even more, you think of solutions to help them. I don't know how many teeth I lost when my jaw dropped after he wanted me to price 800 watt PSU's for this thing. But that is job security when you are the brains behind an endeavor and know that this psu would just blow up the second it was unboxed and it saw what was about to syphon its electrons lol.

Essentially it was built as a replacement for around 10U of dual xeon servers (which I was very happy to take off his hands btw) for his animation company. I am not going to pretend I wasn't scared to first-boot as it was my first redundant psu setup on a non server class board, and a bunch of other fears. Ill tell you what man, my heart rate was about 8x higher than normal (yuk yuk yuk ;0))

My initial worries about the lower bandwidth & chipset generation were eased in the fact that had I gone with Xpower-II, one less card would be utilized. It still would have probably been a monster regardless, but the highest density possible was the goal, so I obliged. There are actually way better ways of doing this, but I had to work with what options I had at the initial sit down.

I even considered the EVGA SR-2 at one point, but cpu's don't do heavy lifting any more in comparison to what GPU's can do, so the lack of and extra slot killed that idea.

Nice Job, I guess you really needed that raid card to take that place...... lol
