Turning off 2 cares did nothing hehe.. well atleast for my vantage attempt.

Reinstalling Vantage as i'm hoping its bad since it keeps looking right away in the last test.

Testing now and i'll see if its fine or not.

Nope.. No idea if its just the MB or the CPU that cant take anymore.
BTW.. Tested both Power supplies with a Kill a watt.

The main P/S peeks at 900+ runing Vantage with overclocked cards and the 2nd is around 600 to low 700s using the same test and settings. Heaven is no where near that.. mostly 5-600 watts.

Plenty of juice left in the tank of both Power supplies.

you may have to consider what your pulling from the wall most outlets are simple 120v with 14 guage wire which is only good for 1400-1600watts, If you pulling nine on one and 7 on the other your peaking that 1600watts. I actually had to move my rig out to the garage to get it to work properly. I didn't realize it until I blew one psu. My lights were dimming in my room when I benchmarked. May not be the case for you, but something to consider. I mean I hate to say it, but its in your setting no doubt somewhere in those settings the magic is there.

may try taking the cpu out of the equation and running the cards themselves and see if you complete the test. If your cpu is stable and your cards are stable shouldn't be a problem. If you have the advanced version of vantage run just the cpu tests and see if it finishes and likewise with the video cards. Find out where the problem lies.

Re:Time to call in the big boys! Need HELP getting my i7 980x behond 4.5Ghz. 2011/02/06 16:25:13 (permalink)
No advanced version of Heaven..

Stock settings on the GPUs will run the maxed out 1024x786 test while the CPU is maxed.  THough i could not do the same with the overclocked cards and cpu at the same time.. Did not try lowering the CPU down from 4.5Ghz and overclock the GPUs only for the maxed heaven test.

I'll try setting the CPU to default.. if i even know what that is (hehe) while overclocking the cards and run that heaven maxed out bench again.

Kinda doubting theres some magical settings i need to set to get a stable run on Heaven at those maxed settings and CPU at 4.5 or 4.6Ghz while also overclocking the cards.

I'll post my bios settings sometime tonight and what i've also tried.

Off the top of my head.. lowering the mem to 9,9,9 did not help.. upping the vcore to 1.56 did not help.. VTT also to +250 did nothing.. PCI-E 102 did'nt help.  Removing 6GBs of ram didnt do anything either.. Dissabling 2 cores did nota as well.

830Mhz on the GPUs without upping the voltage above 1.1v (Actually well below) is the highest i've been able to run Heaven max settings at 1024x768 at 4.5Ghz.

Is either going to be something i need to tweak voltage wise to stablize the system runing SLI or i've maxed the board.

What I'm saying is run the advanced version of vantage and find out if the problem lies in your video cards or the cpu and then you can troubleshoot it. As bad as it sounds one of your cards may not be putting out what the others are. Easy way to test them and then also test. Make sure when you disable cards that you also unplug the pcie cables going to them or your wasting your time as they are still drawing juice from the cables and the pci slot.

Say again?  Are you trying to say that one of the 4 cards are bad or not up to par as the others?

The system has no probs runing Vantage at 4.5Ghz with the cards at 950Mhz.. also runs 3Dmark11 with a slightly less overclock on the cards at 4.5Ghz.

Are you completing the entire benchmark or is it still locking up during the physx portion of vantage. I may have read some of your prior posts wrong. I don't see a reason it could complete vantage at those clocks and not be able to complete heaven at stock clocks. I see you already reloaded heaven. I know it has been known that there is a problem with 3dmark11 messing up vantage because they use the same system scan software. Check the forums its all over the place, but I haven't heard any correlation between it and heaven. I'm just throwing suggestions out there, might get lucky and stumble on to something. And one bad card or even just a weak card can bring the others down, but if your running quad sli at 950mhz on straight water those are some killer clocks. Whats your memory clock at? Whats been your high score for vantage because at those numbers you should have my score beat.

Re:Time to call in the big boys! Need HELP getting my i7 980x behond 4.5Ghz. 2011/02/06 19:05:25 (permalink)
Yeah it can complete vantage at 4.5Ghz and the cards overclocked to 950/2200Mhz on the ram. I got a high score of 66,68something and posted it in the 3dmark score thread on here.  Though it was just today someone with Tri SLi and a 980 overclocked to 47-4800Mhz beat my high score at 67,000+. :/

Also i can even complete Vantage at 4600Mhz but stock GPU clocks.. Heaven max clock bench i cant complete at 4600Mhz at GPU stock clocks.

I'm thinking i need to find a setting that will help stablize the GPUs at 4.6Ghz.

I should just cut to the chase and try upping everything one or 2 notches and see if i can complete Heaven then at 4.6Ghz.. hehe.

Tonight i'll play with it some more but i hav'nt had the chance to the past few hours cause of the SperBowl game... Once the kids are alseep, i'll play with it some more.

I just hope windows can hold up to all this abuse with all the lockups.

Have you upped the vcore on your cards via afterburner or eleet. If you get the older version of eleet it will let you push em on up. My cards would pretty well do whatever I wanted at 1.225 without getting anywhere near overheating.

Been running these setting for the past few days on air. Not sure if you can use them. Just thought you might want to give it a shot.
Disregard the voltage in CPU-z.

Try using the same memory timings and voltages.

I've ben using the MSI Afterburner program and have maxed it out at 1.138 i believe.  That all i can use without using a modded bios.

Thanks for the info.. Would love to try your settings though i have my doubts since your using such low cpu vcore.. heh Must be nice!

Some of the settings are obviously different between motherboards but i'll see if i can figure them out.  Would love to know what your VTT is set at if you have a setting for it?  THe ICH and IOH settings look different from what i'm used to seeing.. I see them as ICH PLL and IOH PLL.. Your is ICH and IOH PCE.. hopefully there the same.

Is that a new 980X? Seems like from what i've been seeing lately is that the newest batch out there are great overclockers with low vcore. WHats your batch #? does it start with 303?

Have you flashed your cards with a modded bios?? Cause thats the only way i've heard to get 1.225v which is the max the bios can give you without hard modding the cards.

Re:Time to call in the big boys! Need HELP getting my i7 980x behond 4.5Ghz. 2011/02/06 23:41:15 (permalink)
I'M GETTING SOMEWHERE FINALLY! lol

See.. when people put up some settings for me to try it even when its for a different MB it gets the juices flowing and i start testing other things.. and something good happens.

I'm really not sure what setting did it for me yet as i've changed a few things.. but i finally got that damn heaven Max settings bench to finish at 4666Mhz!  Sucked that i only went up a whole 5 fps on the test.. didnt look at the score other then the FPS and it was 140 before at 4.5Ghz and now its 145 at 4.6Ghz.  But i think it may raise..

Then i tried Vantage at an medium overclock of 903Mhz at 1.110V and i cant believe it finished! Though i noticed something strange while watching it.. it was going real slow at times and it was really stuttering durring the 2nd test (space ships). The end score was only P50,000 and i had a score of 66682 prior so something was'nt right.

What i changed in the bios was the uncore.. I was at 18x before and i changed it to 24x (3200).  I did that cause i noticed in the settings in daveyd007's screen shot it looked like he had the uncore at 3204 Mhz.  So that seemed pretty high from mine but i thought i'd try it.  I take it that raising that will help stablize the system??? Slowed mine down some..

Damnit.. Vantage just too a crap on me and the system rebooted. Didnt see what test it was on.  I just changed the uncore to 20x to see if it would still run stable.. could of been the overclock on the GPU as i tried 930 this time i believe.. newer 266.58 drivers messed with my max 950 overclock.  Going to try setting the uncore to 21x and see what happends.

Dont like all the high voltages i'm using atm. I also have the memory timings lower a tad to 7,7,7 from 6,7,6. So once i find something that works i'll try to lower some settings and voltges.

Been running these setting for the past few days on air. Not sure if you can use them. Just thought you might want to give it a shot.
Disregard the voltage in CPU-z.

Try using the same memory timings and voltages.

Best Regards,
Dave

WHats your batch #? does it start with 303?

yup, you're right the batch starts with '303'

Would love to know what your VTT is set at if you have a setting for it?
My vtt would be the 'qpi/dram core volt' setting - looking up there, it's set to 1.3 volts

Affirmative Captain, that is right. ;) Looks like you're gaining some momentum with your O/C. Woot! woot! A little more tweaking here and there, and you will be set. I'll look over what you have thus far to see if I can catch anything out of the norm.

Re:Time to call in the big boys! Need HELP getting my i7 980x behond 4.5Ghz. 2011/02/07 12:21:29 (permalink)
Need to be quick but i've played and played some more.. I believe i got 4.666Ghz stable.. but still not overclocked on the GPUS as well. Can bench with them at stock clocks only.

SO i fear that this is gona get ugly and i need to start testing each card seperatly.. and in my rig its gona be murder if there is one bad card cause of the pain in the but to remove the cards.

Glad i have the PCI-E disable jumpers on the MB.. Just hope i can use a single card in whatever slot as i cant move cards around with the water cooling blocks.

Also it could very well be a bad card cause i've noticed strange artifacting in Vantage durring the first test..  On the boat theres a brown tarp and its flickering all over the place and i thought maybe it was drivers but its been ike that for a few different drivers.. So maybe thats the bad card since i hear know one else talking about that prob in vantage.

If you are seeing unusual shimmering on objects in Vantage, particularly the tarp in jane nash, go to the Manage 3D Settings section in the Nvidia Control Panel, now (use the drop down menu for specific program selection settings) find 3DMarkVantage and turn off Texture Filtering - Anisotropic Sample Optimization.

Look below the SLI Rendering Mode option, it should be there. :)

Bench 3DmarkVantage with three cards until you reach around P-63,000 through 65K, then stick that last GTX580 in there for another 5K+ instant boost. ;)

Furthermore, Vantage will test your Uncore stability as it relies heavily on IOH bandwidth.

Re:Time to call in the big boys! Need HELP getting my i7 980x behond 4.5Ghz. 2011/02/07 14:50:34 (permalink)
I'm back as i had to step out..

So the prob with the tarp in the first test in Vantage is normal? Funny how sometimes its totally fine and i never understand why but 99% of the time its bad.

I've tested the system at defaults and auto for everything.. That didnt work ofcourse cause of the quad SLI and i had to up the ICH/IOH blah blah blah to get it to run a bench.  In the end once again.. stock GPU timings can complete vantage. If i overclock the GPUs at all like 903 at max 1.138v it will lock up right away in that last test in vantage.. i'm talking as soon as it loads it will make the computer restart.

I've finally just ran that last test in vantage and unchecked all the other tests to save a ton of time.  Each time it would do the same and i would try upping the IOH and other voltages i dont remember off the top of my head.. no difference with the CPU at stock.  Even upped the CPU vcore and the VTT a hair just to be sure and nothing.. played with the uncore a little and didnt matter.

I'm really hoping theres something i'm really setting wrong in the bios to make it so unstable if i try to overclock the quads.

I'll try to go threw the pain in the ass process and gather all the settings i've been using with the CPU at stock and also at 4.6Ghz that are causing the GPUs to be so unstable in overclocking.

Note.. I've gotten these cards up to 950Mhz max voltage of 1.138v with 260.09 older nvidia drivers.. Seemed that once i installed the newest 266.58 drivers i could not overclock the cards anymore.

Welp i dissabled 4 way SLI and quickly did a test using the first card right after.

First i ran Jane Dash in Vantage and no probs anymore with the tarp on the boat.. Smooth as butter. Then i ran the last test that gave me probs right away. Ran all the way through no probs. Then overclocked it to 903Mhz.. again ran the last vantage test and it ran fine. Then upped it to 930Mhz and it ran fine again.. Then i tried 950Mhz and it ran again perfectly.. Soild 99% on the card and 135 Frame rate.   Would of loved to see what a single card could do overclocking wise but next time heh.

Now to install the 3 way bridge and see what happends.

OK with the 3 cards in SLI no probs at stock.. 903Mhz fine.. 930 fine.. 950 at max voltage (used max for all 3 tests) i started to see that strange flickering tarp on the boat in the first test in Vantage.. Real slight though.

So thats tells me i'm getting close to the wall in overclocking 3 cards or hitting max on one of them..  If thats right as its artifacting when the clocks are too high then its possable that the 4th card is bad if its doing that at stock timings.

Will have to see if i can one just the 1 (4th) card from the PCI-E slot its in as i cant change them around. Test that card and find out if she's bad or what.

Re:Time to call in the big boys! Need HELP getting my i7 980x behond 4.5Ghz. 2011/02/07 17:34:48 (permalink)
Some news.. The 4th card said "Whatyoutalkingaboutwillis?!?!" as it ran totally fine! haha.

Stock,903/930 and 950 at max voltages no probs whatsoever!

I even tossed in the Heaven Max settings bench and it scored a whole 60 FPS and a tad over 1500+ points.  And that was overclocked to 950Mhz!

So..  Guess i'll have to test the 3rd and 2nd card seperately now.

What the freak though... for real!  My guess is either the 3rd card is a turd or its something with the board or some setting i'm not setting right in the bios.
