Some progress.. Removed 3 dimms and now at 6GBs.

Cant remember all the settings i used but i believe i just changed the mult to 35 and upped the voltage to 1.48v. and changed the CPU PLL to 1.905.

Tried it and it lasted a min.. so i then upped the vcore to 1.49. and it lasted about 3 minutes.. so i then tried upping the VTT from +200 to +250.  That was worse. So then i tried lowering the VTT down to +150 and it lasted over 7 minutes.  Then i tried to lower the VTT again to +125 and it lasted again about a minute.

So going to try again at +175 VTT.. see how it does.

Well carp, this board won't do it @ 4.6 (within the 10 minutes I spent on it LOL) too much droop in the vdroop and I don't like starting out with over 1.46 on the vcore. Gives me a reason to RMA this one for the bclk resetting to 133 on S3 resume and put my 'golden' E758 back in that will.

System did seem more stable with a lower CPU PLL at 1.5. Lasted longer with Prime by about 7-8 minutes.

No matter what though with a vcore of 1.49 - 1.51 under load in eleet its prob not enough voltage.

Last ditch effort is to just lower the memory timings.

Running vantage for the hell of it cause i have a feeling it will last long enough with the lower mem timings.. plus i want to see what kind of impact those will have on the score.

Welp.. i tried to raise the cpu vcore to 1.50 in the bios and it report in eleet at 1.52 under load. put the mem timings back to 6,7,6 and Ran Prime95 and it was the first time it ran over 10 minutes. 11 minutes exactly and she blue screened. :(

So i was like what the hell.. i'll give her a tad more juice and set it to 1.5060 i believe and it gave me the black screen at log in.. did that 3 times in a row and i thought.. great it finally screwed up windows. Tried lowering the voltage back down a little but the same. Then just loaded up the stable 4.5Ghz profile and thank god i was able to get back into windows.

Let me add tha tthe temps only went up a whole degree.. so the temps were basicly the same.. low 60s to low 70s on the last core.

Yea...

I'd just stick it out with 4.5 ghz and be happy.... you want more then just go to SB when the bugs get ironed out.

I mean really is it worth breaking that 1k cpu of yours?

Agreed.. Well atleast i know what my max is and i'm runing it so i cant rest and finally start to enjoy the rig.

I'll try and hold off on the Sandy bridge untill something better comes along or a bigger mb that will support quad sli hehe.. doubt it.

Srry I coulnd't help dude these chips are so much different, your rig really has some potential to be a solid top 5 mod rig so I would say keep pushing it. It takes some time but you'll figure it out. I would hate to think all these 980s arnt good for 5.0ghz though I may be wrong. I may have just really got lucky with the batch i got.

Thanks.,. yeah i'm still trying on and off.

I thought i could just sneek up to 4600Mhz but nope.. not totally stable. Hell its just a few Mhz more then i'm runing.

After messing around with Heaven Benchmark and seeing how i cant overclock for nothing on that bench and only can run stock clocks on the cards or it will lock up in the first 5-30 secs.. i'm starting to think that the MB just dont have enough power to supply everything overclocked.

I have this strange feeling that if i remove 1 580 that i'll beable to overclock higher on the CPU.

Re:Time to call in the big boys! Need HELP getting my i7 980x behond 4.5Ghz. 2011/02/05 10:03:18 (permalink)
Heres the settings in Heaven 2.1 that i've tried with my 580s overclocked.. I'm talking i've tried even the smallest overclock on them and i get a lock/black screen after a few seconds.

Rules:

__Benchmark testing to be done with Heaven v2.1
__Benchmark testing to be done with a resolution of 1024 x 768 (Not everyone can run the same resolution, so this is the base)
__Benchmark testing to be done with the following enabled: DirectX11, Shaders on HIGH, Tessallation on EXTREME, Anisotropy on 16, Anti-aliasing on 8X with FULL SCREEN enabled.

The purpose of this thread is for everyone to use the same base settings so the results can be examined.

Please just post a screenshot of your results and list the number of GPU's used along with the clocks.

So i'm just wondering what you guys think?? If it is too much for the system to handle, could'nt my overclocks be limited cause of 4 GTX580s?

Someone have Quad SLI and can run the above with the system and cards overclocked?

I am currently tweaking my 4.5 GHz using the updated Linx. Not the one listed in this thread, because it is a dirty link(adware). Post #31 to be more specific.

I just finished this run of 20x 25000 problems on air. My tech room's temperature is currently too high, and I am not finished tweaking the  no.77 BIOS.

Please give me some suggestions.. Would obviously love something over 4600.. 4700+ would be sweet.

I've tried going faster but Prime 95 will just lock right away if i go any higher.. I've tried upping the cpu vcore up to 4.7 and that didnt help.. upped the VTT +50 and that did nothing. I've also tried removing a set of ram and just runing it with 6GBs thinking that was forsure what was holding me back and nope! Same thing.  Plus tried lowering the timings to 8,8,8 2T and that didnt make a difference either.

I've run out of ideas but i still believe it should get atleast 4.6Ghz.

Keep up the good work. Great thread.

I'm finally getting somewhere.. Currently at 4633Mhz.  I only changed 2 settings. One was raising the NB voltage. Was at 1.22 prior and now at 1.26v and i'm for the first time well over 30 mins of Prime Small FFT test.

Welp, i let Prime run for 41 mins and then stopped it and ran Vantage.. and that ran no probs.. Then i try out Heaven at max settings at 1024x768 and what happends at stock GPU speeds?  Yup.. black screen after test 17 of 26. :(

Played with the settings some more and it didnt seem to matter.. Black screen in Heaven.

Once again just points me in the direction that all this is cause i'm runing Quad 580s.  prob tonight i'll dissable one and see what happends to the stability and overclock with Tri-Sli.

I do not have a recommended setting for you about your IOH VCore at this time. I do have this morning's 20x run
of Linx at 25000 problems to share with you and all forum members. My rig is on air. Ambient temperature this morning in my home was at an estimated 68 degrees F. The load temps dropped 1 degrees C from yesterday's run. IOH VCore was set at 1.4 in the BIOS------which was probably too high.

It shouldn't matter as far as how many cards you have in, I run vantage and linx at 5.2 with all 4 cards installed. Looks like you have enough wattage to run everything. I was able to go from 5.220 to 5.385 when I dropped all but one card out so there is some gain in it. I would ensure your PCIE load is up to it try 4096 and bump the pcie up to say 102 should be pretty solid there, remember to loosen up those ram timing some also.

Can you run Heaven with the settings mentioned in this thread with quad cards stock and also with the cards overclocked using your max CPU overclock?

Yeah with ease, I can usually clock em to about 850/2100 before I start getting artifacts and lockups in heaven. I use the 266.35 drivers and they work real well for me.

I'm getting close to saying forget it..

I'm gona lower the ram timings to 9,9,9 and up the uncore to 20x and if i still cant run vantage overclocked or heaven max settings stock GPus... I'm done trying.

Re:Time to call in the big boys! Need HELP getting my i7 980x behond 4.5Ghz. 2011/02/06 10:28:26 (permalink)
None of that worked..

Put the settings back to 4633Mhz and tired to up the vcore even though i doubt it needs more then 1.52v.

The max overclock i can sort of get it 903Mhz at max voltage.. everytime it black screens right at the begining of the last test on Vantage.  Tired lower voltage and that dont happen either.

So.. I guess i'll disable 1 card just to see if she will finish the test.. then i'll know the board cant handle all that power.

I'm also debating turning off 2 cores as i have a feeling that till give me that much extra juice to overclock higher.
