It has 1536 Cuda Cores (same as 680) but slower base clock and memory interface. Will it fold similarly to the 680 since the folding client utilizes the Cuda Cores or will the slower memory speed kill it, so to say. At $80 the 630 would be a windfall for gpu folders. Not to mention it's single slot and does not appear to need a PCIE connector for power. Load a board up... yee haw!

I hear that. That's why I waited and did not buy any 500 series cards. Sold all but one of my 400 series cards. Waiting patiently, Excellent!!!

Still though, the GT 640 should fold as well as the GTX 460's, 465's, 560's and standard 560 ti's do.

I'm waiting for a true Kepler low-end gpu for folding. I'm disappointed that Nvidia released the 610~630 with the Fermi core. Hopefully the GT640 will not disappoint. I'm looking for 2x with 2GB of ram and low-profile. One would be used for 24/7 folding, the other for part-time folding & phyx card.

Actually, there are two versions. One is the OEM version which can be true Kepler's, except the 605 & 620. And then there is the consumer version, which so far are the Fermi cores. If you already own a GT420~440 or GT520, the GT610~630 is the same. I'm folding on a GT420, and let me say this, IT IS SLOW. Projects can take over a day. One the reasons why I'm ditching this card. I had plans for a Fermi 96 cuda core CPU to takes its place, but Nvidia is finally releasing those low-end GPU's, so I going to wait a little.

GTS 450 is probably the smallest card to use, I clock them pretty high and get 10K a day on them, I had three, but gave two to my son for his rig to SLI and he's tickled pink. There really not a bad card.

There really not a bad card. I agree with you.. That GTS 450 is a hard working card, I have 3 of them myself. But I think with the used market price point of the GTX 460 reaching ~$80, I've have to say it time to switch to GTX 460.

I have two GTX 460SC's that run 15k a day each, but they are a hotter running card for say a garage PC which is where i put my dedicated folders Ive seen a Zotack 460 with a fan on the end like the 570's, now that may be an option for a cooler running card. I have 2 570SC with back plates on my Z68 board, they can handle the heat better because the air travels from inside to out the back. Center fans exhaust half the air in the case. The 450's dont seem to run that hot even with the center fans. I live in Texas so the summers may slow my production down.

Guys, you must remember that in the 600-series architecture, they split up an equivalent fermi cuda core into two cores to lower power consumption. When comparing 600-series to any previous-generation cards, you have to divide the core count by 2 to get a comparable core count. So, a GT640 with 384 cores would be comparable to a 500-series card with 192 cores in it. After that, your shader clocks also come into play, ranging from 1GHz ~1.8GHz. Meaning? If you're folding, a a GT640 is about the same as a 550Ti.

Not to be your buzzkill, we had other similar topics on this. This thread is 2 months old and was mostly dropped. But you are right on your theory and that is the general concensis. The GT640 is actually slower than a GTX550 Ti at the moment. Maybe once the new core15 is released, it may change then.

Absolutely. Any card GTX 400 Series and up is going to be an improvement. The benefit you will have with the 600 Series is less power consumption and less heat that the 400 and 500 Series cards. Anybody correct me if I'm wrong on this. I've been cpu folding for over a year now and do not keep on the gpu folding aspect like I used to.
