Hey Guy's,
After a couple of problems with 2 of my computers this week in the PrimeGrid challenge. I am looking to build the Ultimate Cruncher.

Given an unlimited budget.. But not a super computer budget, OK..
What would you choose and why??

Will be water cooled, Absolutely....
No GPU's, hopefully will be on board...but have a spare couple of EVGA 770's laying around...

I have built many computers, most on a budget. Now I have no limits.....Awesome.
Currently have 4x Folding computers with 10x EVGA GPU's running 24/7. The spare CPU cores are used to crunch.

So give me your wildest ideas and gear suggestions.

Looking forward to building this beast.....

Much appreciate your suggestions and advice.

Cheers
Steve

    Sounds like fun.
Try for a 4 Socket Zeon build with 128GB of RAM and use them 770s for crunching as well. And a nice PCI-E SSD for the storage.

A quad socket Intel  Xeon v3 series or v4 series with each CPU 12 cores or more cores would produce.
You can get a lot more hardware buying used, new Xeon CPUs are crazy expensive.
There are dual socket 2011 boards, new OEM for 200$ and used 8 core CPUs as low as 70$ each. Were 1550$ new

    Thanks Bill for the PM,
Been looking at ebay and some nice deals. 4x CPU would be best, a killer 2x CPU is not out of the question.

Off to do some more research....

    Much appreciated.

The weekend goes by so quickly... oh well. My Boy's had awesome birthday parties Saturday and Sunday, mini-golf and go-carting. Plus an awesome water fight, cake, and cake and pinball........
So much pinball, burnt out a coil on one of the poppers,,,

    Totally exhausted and crashing out.

Tomorrow is a new day and I might have 2 hrs free to install some components into my download and security computers.

    Fingerscrossed....

    Lower board installed.

Squeezed 2x 970's in there, i7-6700K, 16gb ram and AIO Corsair H100i cooler.

All neat and tidy, now to just slide it in and start on the upper board.

    Hey Guy's,
Been busy messing around with computers this week.
Finally got some CPU's for my HP DL585 G7, originally had 4x cpu's with 4 cores each, Now have 12 cores for each cpu.. 48 cores now.
Thought I would throw some tasks at it.
Running the rest of my Enigma tasks, runs perfect..on all 48 cores.

But just tested some Folding, It does not use all 48 cores, even though it has detected and says cpu:48.. using the beta Folding client.
I am looking at CoreTemp and see not all cpu's cores, some are at 0%
Yes I should ask over on the Folding forum, but thought to ask here as most of you here were BigAd crunchers.

Anyway, More water cooling parts came in today, so need to finish my hoses and fire up another computer..

    Appreciate any comments.
    Cheers

I have a vague recollection that after the end of bigadv, the remaining CPU projects do not scale to as many CPUs as before.  I could be wrong... but the more important point is that it is almost pointless (note the pun) to do CPU folding any longer.  The PPD/Watt is so low compared to GPUs that unless your energy is free it simply is not worth doing.  In last year's TZC, I produced only 2.4 million points using a 24-core Xeon E5 system that draws 300W, in what must have been a few weeks' time.  Now you can do that much in 5 days or less, drawing 170W with a GTX 1070.

If I remember right 8 is the most cores for SMP right now, so you have to run 6 slots of 8 cores to load up your system.
Maybe easier to just go do some PG LLR WUs and see how well she does.

What MB and CPUs did you go with?
