Re:The Official Single and Dual 275 Vantage Score Thread 2009/12/14 00:08:04 (permalink)
Well, I think I may have capped out the 275's.  :(

I spent all day tweaking voltages and finally was able to get 4.4 ghz completely stable (if not altogether as temperature fine and dandy as I would have liked) and actually managed to lose points on my score.  It's amazingly odd how losing 60 points in Graphics Score actually hurts more than gaining 802 in CPU score.

Check this out:

Sadness.  I even upgraded to the Corsair Dominator GT this weekend to boot...and let me tell you, it's not easy to get those things into Dragoons.  I think my friend who was over was about to lock me up and assume insanity when I happily put two dimms of Corsair Dominator GT 8-8-8-24 2k mhz RAM onto a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and slid them into the oven.

:D

(Had to melt the glue they use to get the shell off them in case the insanity of this move was blowing your brain out)

Yeah same on my end... at exact same setting, I actually got lower Vantage score when I went from 3.9 ghz to 4.05 ghz... lower by like 500 ffs? System was completely stable after 25k lynx tests and p95

Re:The Official Single and Dual 275 Vantage Score Thread 2009/12/14 10:06:06 (permalink)
Ok, so after sleeping on it here is my current choices for where to go next.

If it isn't obvious by my active posting in this thread, I love the hell out of benchmarking/overclocking just for the sake of doing it.  When I'm gaming everything is backed down to 4.2 ghz/2100 mhz ram and 745/1525/1225.  I'm mildly irritated that I can't seem to break that last score I posted despite 9 hours of work on the task and Bradnob, per your request, I did everything under the sun to get even 5 more clocks out of my 275's core clock.  It's just not going to happen and it isn't a heat issue, they never crest 55 degrees under load, I just don't think the chips have it in them to go any higher.  Hell even bumping to 761 results in a nvdklmmn crash 5 seconds out of the gate in Jane.  :(

So I'm faced with a dilemma - don't benchmark anymore (not an option, see above) or upgrade a component this weekend to unlock more headroom (now that's more like it).  The question I have for you guys is where should I go next to try to raise this score.

1.  I can jump over to a p55 classified board in 3 days (paycheck arrival + shipping) and see if that doesn't free up more wiggle room by proxy of being more stable under overclocks.  The bonus to this option is that I unlock triple SLI ability for myself and that is a huge amount of head room.  3rd card would become by main vga card (275-co-op) and I'd push that sucker as far as I could.  The double gpu graphics cards make me nervous though because I'm not sure how well they overclock and by well I mean can they get their cores to 760 etc.

2.  Upgrade my i7 860 to an 870 and pray that the above results with higher cpu clocks don't hold true.  I'm partial to this if only for the instant gratification of running to microcenter and buying the chip to get started the moment my paycheck deposits to my account, yet I'm hesitant because I really don't know how much more performance the 870 gives...and it's a five hundred some odd dollar investment.

3.  Throw in the towel and order 1 GTX 285 Classified and just wait out SLI later while I push that card beyond where it's supposed to go.  This sounds fun just because I actually have the 1700 watts of power in my case to support this venture and the cards power hungry 3x6 pcie cable attachments.  This unlocks unhealthy tendencies in me though, since I become fascinated with "what if's."  (e.g. "If I give a 2 SLI 285 classified dedicated 1300 watts of power, I wonder if I can jump over the top of the 295 boys.")  :D

Anyone have some input here?

I'm leaning toward the 285 classified solution, but that's partially because I'm being lazy and don't want to take Hatter apart again.  It's my first personally built computer and I just recently shifted cases, it's not easy doing cable management for 9 ultra kaze fans, dimm fans, my cooling tunnel (soon to be patended btw :D), and all the rest of the normal cable management.  Not to mention the Thermaltake Express VGA PSU has a god damn AC power cord running through one of my PCI slots on the back of the computer.

Re:The Official Single and Dual 275 Vantage Score Thread 2009/12/14 10:33:09 (permalink)
I am also not impressed with my build and will be selling it off to go Classified, can't resist lol. Even though its a huge money sink, but don't see another choice for now. My C0 chip is pushing 4.0 on STOCK voltages with amazing temperatures, and was able to get it to 4.4, but temps start to get a bit too high for my comfort zone, but did get it stable. So I'm thinking of going i7 870, Classified mobo, and probably Also classifieds 285s (selling off my other 2 GTX 285s as well.) I played around with GTX 285s 1GB memory cards, and I'm not too impressed by them, maybe at least the cards I got didn't push as much as my 275s.

I was able to get my 275s to put out for sure on stock everything, but they did start to get HOT. I don't want to invest watercooling on these, if I do go 285s Classifieds, its either liquid cooling or some kind of other aftermarket cooling system, we'll see :)

Gl on your build, keep us updated :p

Reasonable solution, but I'm on vacation this week and had wanted to benchmark most of the week.  My idea initially had been to work on RAM clocks, but I can't get enough voltage to the corsair dominator GT's to get them over 2200 while keeping my cpu stable.  Maybe i7 870 this week, play with it incessantly (since it will do nothing but help the 300 clocks) and then go to the classified board in preparation for a 3 SLI 300 setup.  Now that's doable and makes sense...

hrm.  I believe I have a solution!

I still can't believe I had to ****ing bake my newly bought RAM in my oven to put a better heatsink on them.  Hell I had to use silicon epoxy to attach the new heatsinks because Corsair uses a non-standard DIMM size.

Chocolate chip DIMM sticks anyone?  Bueller?  :D

ill start oc'n tomorrow i just picked up the pII 940 for a really good price so i thought i could see what i could do with it but i just have one problem. my current heatsink is not doing a very good job of cooling down the cpu(38 idle/58 load). does anyone have any recommendations for a good heatsink?

the megahalem is rated as one of the best air coolers you can buy tho you might want to check on height just incase plus since you are an am2 socket you have to buy the bracket for it

thats a very small cooler you have lol if you want something silent and small stat you could always go with the corsair h50 im not sure what your budget is or what type of case you are in either so its hard to recommend a cooler you could always go to the overclocking page and put your full specs along with case and such to help find a better cooler i would think the max orb should be better but i cant find anything showing the spec of the ultra vs anything.

well ive just got a standard mid-tower case nothing special. i have modified it a bit to get more airflow. and i think the corsair h50 might be a good idea. as for budget it doesnt really matter that much because i want to see how far i can push this without going with a full on water cooling system. thanks for the help.

the h50 is a great product it rates a little under for cooling then the mega does you might want to check the forums there are some people that used different fan configs to boost the performance out of the  unit plus nice thing about the h50 is you will keep the quiet solution you mentioned you like about the other setup.

true extreme 120 is a great cooler but also very big. Cools great, and if you get 2 great fans ( like the ebernax fabs *which can cost up to 30 bucks each but arguably best fans on market) You put a in and out fan and it cools like no other :p

Feel like adding triple 275's to this thread? Over a month ago I asked Talonman if he could add them to his triple 260, 280, 285 thread, but nothing came of it...

Stray_Bullet

Can we get some Tri 275's in here?

Can I also be Big Dog for a bit?

nope..  hehehe

btw stray gots a question for ya.. i have been toying with the idea of going x3sli  but how is the sound quality of the onboard sound card?  im running a creative X-FI extreme now and i love it but i would lose it going 3sli..

i know your running the 790 and im on the x58 758 but i think they use the same or nearly the same sound chip.
