So I had a talk with my 275's this weekend.  We've had good times and bad, but I let them know they needed to step up their game or they were being placed into the secondary computer.

Clearly talking to inanimate objects stabilizes overclocks!

Thanks man.  I just finished pushing it through 3DMark 06 and had to turn it back some to get it through the benchmark.  Something in the APC at the very beginning just does not play well with my clocks.  Regardless, the score came back with a huge jump over my previous scores, so much so that I'm pushing higher than some of the GTX 295 Rigs in 3DMark 06 if Mods Rigs can be believed.

Think I'm finally getting the hang of this chipset.

For 3DMark 06 (Don't think we're tracking this one here, but I'm pretty proud of it.):

Edit: Beat the other score, updating.

Both of my cards have Arctic Cooling MX-3 on them, that and strapping fans onto the face of the cards seemed to make all the difference. Until doing that, my second card was holding me back as my first card seems to be a damn diamond in the rough considering they are both Vanilla non-superclocked GTX 275's.  Not bad for $200 apiece!

I've upgraded the fans on the cards, so my diagram on Mods Rigs is out of date now, to 3K RPM Ultra Kaze's.  That makes 9 of those loud bastards in my case, makes the machine sound like an industrial grade air conditioning unit when it's kicking.  Thank god I actually like white noise, my friends want to kill me and I've been officially told that The Mad Hatter is not welcome at LAN Parties any time soon. Haha :)

I will say I bought the Xigmatek Dragoons on a whim last night so I could really test out running at 4 GB RAM instead of 8 GB.  I'm truly impressed with how stable the ram is right now, although installing them took the better part of last night and I had to retire my OCZ RAM Fans.

Probably will be taking this through 30000 over the weekend, making significant progress.  I honestly am blown away with my RAM and the Xigmatek Dragoon's I put on it.  That OC is on the Sector 5's rated for 1600 MHZ not the 2000 MHZ rated Sector 5's.  I almost have them stable at 2200 but it's just going to be a matter of tightening the voltages into the right places.

There is some interesting balance that has to be maintained, regardless of synch being turned off, between shader and core clocks.  For instance in Precision if I'm at 1525 shader value and 760 core clock all is good with the world.  Yet if I try to bump core clock to 770 and leave shader at 1525...the moment I hit Apply Core clock reverts to 760.

Raising Shader to 1560 seems to overcome this limitation or block that's on the chip and allows for the cards to go in excess of 760 in Core Clock up to around 800 or so.  Yet I can't stabilize it since the shader clock seems to be a serious weakness that I can't seem to fortify.

It certainly is not a lack of power, my GTX 275's have a dedicated Thermaltake 650 Watt 2 Bay PSU that's integrated with my Enermax 1050 85+ on the motherboard.  I've also given a dedicated rail to the P55 FTW PCIE Power DC-In on the motherboard that's for overclocking.  Temperature is also not an issue as my cards never get above 50-55 when running 3DVantage.  In fact I've only ever seen them higher than that after 24 hours of folding.

What I have not tried doing is inching shader up 5 at a time to see if I can uncover the break point where the shader allows me to upscale the core clock.  I think I can stabilize the Core at 770 but there's no way I do it with the shader clock at 1560 - it's just asking to much from the card I think.

I'm kind of dying to get my hands on 2 of the GTX 285 Classified's since they have no true ceiling on them as far as I understand.  I'm pretty sure I could run them through the roof on air with my configuration, but as I cannot afford them at 400 apiece I don't think it will ever happen.  I would love to make two of those cards sing though.

Man if I could stabilize my 4.4 clock I would clear 30000.  This poor RAM is soldiering on at an amazing pace, I keep expecting it to pop any moment considering how much more I'm asking from it than the initial design intended.  Yet onward it goes allowing me to raise my score without any new components!

Edit:

Stabilized 4.3 so removing the previous and adding this one.  Looks like 4.4 will not get me above 30,000.  I'll probably end up at 29,000 if I can get it stable.  I've tried moving the cards clocks around but the nvdlkmmn thing when the drivers time out is absolute murder on time invested.  Unless there is a trick I don't know to recover, I'm having to restart the entire machine each tiime I run a clock test which is killer.

Dude. I got 760/1560/1300 on both of my cards yesterday, but my temps were in 50-64 during vantage tests (fanspeed 75% only). I am getting better fans and rebuilding my entire case cooling system next week, so my temps should be much better.
But regardless, with CPU stable OC at 3.9 (didn't have time to get higher yet, will hit 4.2 today) and my both cards at 760/1560/1300, my score is 27.9k. I lowered my CPU clock since last time just to be able to be more stable (started over).

My graphic score went up by about 250 points for going +30 more oc to 760 from 730. But since my cpu isn't 4.2 no more I'm assuming thats why score so much lower. I guess today will show :)

y3vgeniy =    i7 920 @ 3.9GHZ................(x2) 760/1560/1300..............6gb Corsair dominators @ 1600mhz ........ 27950.

By the way five, man your ram works better then a $5 hook*r, how the heck you get it to 2155? and by how much did that increase your score? Thats insane. I'm wondering if I can run my ram at 2x10 instead of 2x8. hmmm... im at 8-8-8-24 timing t1 right now so we'll see

I was really thinking about going with Corsair RAM for my upgrade but after watching these Patriot DIMMS perform at such an admirable level, I have to admit they may have locked me in as a customer for life.  I'm now a huge proponent of these Xigmatek Dragoon heatsinks, so much so I feel like I'm becoming way to fanboy-esque about them.  These DIMMS could not stabilize at anything above 1750 or so prior to applying the Xigmatek Dragoons...and now, well just look at em go.  Given my fan setup is unintentionally extremely good for maximizing the effectiveness of the dragoons, but still that's an absolutely enormous leap for a $34.99 investment on RAM that cost me $95.

That makes 3 different hardware makers who I go to first (EVGA, Patriot, Xigmatek) for all my computer needs.

I have been shifting things up and down, but I think I know what's holding me back.  It's not the chip I have so much as I don't think I did a good enough job applying TIMS to my cpu.  It was my first time working with Arctic MX-3 and it was extraordinarily tacky, making my normal plastic card application I've used in the past a difficult procedure.  Not to mention, while I've changed heatsinks 3 times on this computer...it's still my first computer build ever.

When applying the TIMS to my graphics cards though, I changed up the process and used my finger wrapped in saran wrap.  This applied it extraordinarily easy and smoothly across the chip, while allowing me to keep it nice and thin as well. It's a learning process and I'm getting better at it.

This weekend may become a super project but at least by the end of it I'll know if that's holding me back or the motherboard itself is, which will prompt me to purchase the Classified board if I come to that conclusion.

Edit:  Oh and don't run Juliet in Everest until you're absolutely positive of what it will do.  I think I had a heart attack last night mid-benchmarking when I watch my cpu temp which has been tops of 75 suddenly head upward and onward to 90-95.  It completed moments later and the cpu immediately cooled off, but it scared the crap out of me.

Yeah your ram is definitely a worker. Can't say that about mine, haven't pushed it to limits yet, its a bit too expensive for me to risk blowing it haha...
