Howdy folks! I'm running a brand new GTX 560 Ti SC and was curious about something. When I have my standard 1920x1080 display hooked up, I usually idle somewhere around 35c, which from what I understand is normal. When I add my little 1280x1024 monitor my temps shoot up to 51 idling. Is this normal? Should I be at all worried? Thanks!

Normal. The card runs at full power when using 2 monitors.

Yep .. Your gpu will run at full 2D or 3D mode clocks when a second monitor is installed.

It would also help to have Precision downloaded and the fan customized and enabled if you haven`t done that already. I have 2 Acer G235H hooked up to my 560ti sc (Maximum Graphics Ed.) and usually idle between 34-42.

What does your fan profile look like? Right now I'm going with the default they gave me, software controlled.

U could set it to something like this, it's what i used on my 580 when it was aircooled, 50% was inaudible over my case fans so thats what i had it isle at for lower idle temps.

I changed the default one a tad. Most people say to use it by a difference of "ten" i.e. 30° fan is at 40%, 40° fan is 50%, 50° fan is at 60%, etc. Mine is 30° fan is at 40%, 40° fan is at 60% then basically <ten% increments after that. Works for me.

running at full clocks is not fully truthful ,i run 2 1920x1200 samsungs on one gtx 480 (driver 280.19) and my clocks with Firefox running during a video are 405/820/324, (half full clocks ) Nvidia panel is on multi display mode and adaptive power control And go to 51 core 101 /135 when firefox is closed (basic desktop)

I think it all depends on the mood the bios progammer was in lol.. I'll bet there must be dozens of core/memory/shader combos being used. eg.. my former HD 5750 ran video at 1150/full memory clocks ...

I remember reading an article on guru3D or anandtech that explained why this happens but I can't find it. Essentially there is something that allows the memory to downclock and still stay in sync with the monitor that becomes impossible when more than one monitor is used, where the memory must remain at its maxed frequency under all load conditions. I'll edit if I can find it.

I'd like to hear more, my last 2 systems had video out to either multiple monitors or an HDTV and a monitor, but my GTX580 runs hotter than I'd like in that situation, so I've been leaving my Samsung 46"LED unplugged unless I'm streaming NetFlix. I'm running a modified fan profile and the Fan Unlocker BIOS and have good airflow, but I idle at 40C with only one plugged in. Don't want to idle hotter than that...

FOUND IT! This specifically explains AMD's solution, but the limitation is the same cross platform: PowerPlay saves power via engine voltage, engine clock, and memory clock switching. Memory clock switching is timed to be done within an VBLANK so that a flash isn't seen on the screen when the memory speed is changed. This can be done on a single display, but not with multiple displays because they can (and in 99% of the cases, will be) running different timings and virtually impossible to hit a VBLANK on both at the same time on all the panels connected (and when we say "timings" it’s not as simple as just the refresh rate of the panel, but the exact timings that the panel's receivers are running). So, to keep away from the end user seeing flashing all the time, the MCLK is kept at the high MCLK rate at all times. With regard to power savings under multiple monitors, we have to trade-off between usability and power. Because we can't control what combinations of panels are connected to a desktop system we have to choose usability. Other power saving features are still active (such as clock gating, etc.) so you are still saving more power than peak activities. Note, that in a DisplayPort environment we have more control over the timing and hence this issue could go away if all the panels connected were DP."

Thanks, the information is very interesting. There's no Displayport on either my card, my HDTV, or my monitor so I can't experiment with that...

SCIENCE! Interesting stuff. Thanks for the info! So, should I at all worry about having that screen connected? At what temperature should I start to worry? I remember initially when I first had it set up I was getting 90c in Starcraft 2. Edit: Shoot, can't post links yet... its on imgur, album name is hydralisk, subdomain is irreama I can have more pictures later on.

If your temperatures only increase a marginal amount, which it usually does, then I'd not worry too much overly about it. If you find that your temperatures are a bit higher than normal just use precision or afterburner and set a more aggressive fan profile to keep things cooler or improve some of your airflow in the case to compensate.
