Time for my second-ever post, and once again it's a problem (yippee).

I bought a GTX 980 SC as an upgrade for the 680 I had been using for the past three years. Before removing the 680, I rebooted into safe mode, ran DDU and CCleaner, and then shut down the machine and installed the new card. However, the system will not pass the BIOS screen from the motherboard. It loads fine up to that point, but when the *beep* that normally announces the system self-check is complete is produced, it just sort of hangs. After about a minute, it'll produce the same beep again, but still nothing happens; after about another minute and a third beep, the screen goes blank and the only thing shown is a rapidly blinking cursor in the upper left of the screen (like what you might see in a command prompt that's waiting for input). Nothing I do has any effect after that, and after waiting on that screen for about ten minutes I don't think it's doing anything in the background either.

Does anyone have an idea what's going on? I don't think it's the PCIe slot, since it worked (works, I suppose, since I put the 680 back in in the meantime) with the old card.

For reference, I have a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H mobo and have a Cooler Master SPH 850W PSU.

Unplug everything you have in your usb slots except keyboard and mouse, then reboot. If it happens again keep it configured that way and do a clear cmos, then reboot. Post back with your results.

I have now updated the bios, and I've unplugged everything I can. Now to see if it'll accept the card.

Well, it's booting at least. The card's not showing up in windows, though; Geforce experience can't find a card, Nvidia's system scanner can't either, and nothing's listed in the device manager.

That is a pretty old chipset p67, maybe e-mail the manufacturer to see if the new gtx 980 is supported?

I'm having the exact same issue with that board... replacing a 670 myself. Would love to know if you get this figured out, last time I flash BIOS this thing didn't like it at all, so hoping it's not that.

Have tried reset bios switch, pulling battery for 10min w/ power off, changing BIOS with the 670 to default/stock, Legacy ROM boot and changed default PCI boot mode to gen3 (assuming this was pcie3.0?). Always gets stuck at the BIOS screen with code B2 (or 62? it looks like a lower case b2) then the code won't change, but it will beep once; (B2 is legacy Option ROM initilization and 62 is installation of the PCH runtime services).

Any ideas? Was going to be trying the 980 out on a buddy's PC tomorrow to see if it's DOA but after seeing this on the exact same mobo...

Well, found the fix. Need to update your BIOS to F13 and you should be good to go.

Sorry for not getting back sooner, everyone. I did end up getting it working, though to be honest I'm not entirely sure what it was that fixed it.

After updating the BIOS to the latest version (which I think was F14), I shut down the machine, took out the card, and bridged CMOS to reset the BIOS to factory settings. After that, I started it up and ran up to logging into windows using the integrated graphics output (just to make sure the BIOS was, in fact, working properly). Having done THAT, I restarted, disabled the integrated graphics in the BIOS menu, and did a standard save-and-exit. This made it very unhappy, as it recognized (correctly) that there was no graphics output available. After that, I shut it down once again, installed the 980, bridged CMOS a third time, and then the card was recognized perfectly happily and Geforce Experience installed the drivers without a hitch. Haven't had any problems with it since then.

I had some issues after this, so just FYI... if you have a heavy overclock (I have a 3770k at 4.9) and any instability, when the board fails a boot it will check/switch to the secondary BIOS. I only flashed M_BIOS and didn't get B_BIOS, so you may want to consider flashing your B_BIOS to F14 as well or you'll just have the same hangup when it switches over. Switch to B_BIOS using the switch to the right of the reset/power/speaker headers in the middle/bottom of the mobo.

A very good idea. Thanks for reminding me to do that.

just in case anyone else has this issue.. I had same problem but different solution.  My first time using DDU, since it was still Driver Sweeper.

uninstalled gtx770 drivers, ran DDU as directed... then selected shutdown..installing new card..  after installing new card my PC made post..would allow me to go into bios..then black screen and flashing cursor.

in bios boot priority had been disabled so my primary OS SSD wasnt even selected as an option... reset my boot order to optical then OS SSD saved and rebooted all good

Sorry for bringing an old thread back to life, but I've been having a similar issue and have absolutely no idea what to do here...

For starters, I'm not doing any sort of overclocking, just updating from a GTX 560 to a GTX 970. I uninstalled the drivers for the 560, shut down, pulled the old card out, plugged the 970 in, booted up... And got my BIOS screen for three beeps with about a minute between beeps, after which the screen just goes black. However, I don't see any flashing cursor at the black screen. I shut it down, swap back to my 560, and it boots up just fine. I've already tried resetting the BIOS back to factory settings and, surprise, no luck.

Any idea what I'm missing here?

I actually just finished updating my BIOS about thirty minutes ago and was successful in starting up my system with the new card installed. Apparently the gap from F8 to F22 is kind of a big deal... All fixed now, though! Now to chew out Ubisoft about my Unity from Steam not working...

WEll I have a Asus P8Z68-V Gen 3 Motherboard with the latest BIOS and I am unable to post with my new eVGA 980GTX in the PCI slot..

The PC Boots fine with the old eVGA 590GTX in and even with out a video card.. I will try 1 last time to unplug some usb devices and reset cmos but other then that what can make my PC not post with the 980GTX in..

I did check the 980GTX on another PC it worked fine just not on my main rig..

EDIT: I solved my issue by resetting CMOS and then it booted..

First I would like to apologies for grave-digging this thread but i'd rater post in this discussion rather than creating a new one since the topic is the same.

I'm having the same problem as the OP. When i boot with the EVGA GTX 980 it gets stuck on the BIOS splash screen and it doesn't let me go into BIOS, the screen is completely frozen. After a couple of minutes it will take me to a black screen with a flashing dash cursor in the upper left corner. My PC specs are below.

I have had the GA-Z77X-D3H for a couple of years and have never updated my BIOS. (Im vary wary about touch BIOS because i know i can do a lot of damage and I'm not educated in that area so i stay well away). However reading this thread it seems like the most common fix is to simply update my BIOS to a current version then reboot and all will be well.

My question to you guys is; which version do i need to download and how do i go about downloading it? Here is a link to where i think I download the BIOS updates from, please help me choose the correct version and send me a link to that download page, like i said I'm very wary about anything to do with my BIOS.

i5-3570k 3.4ghz
Gigabyte Z77X-D3H motherboard
Corsair 650w PSU
8GB Kingston RAM
Upgrading GPU from 670 to 980

Thanks in advance,
Dan

Hi Well Try resetting CMOS.. On most boards there are jumpers or you can just take the battery out for a few seconds with the PC Off then put it back in that should reset CMOS.. If you want to do the jumper method look in your manual for the location and how to do it..

I had the most latest BIOS and it still did not boot.. I would try resetting CMOS first..

Thanks in advance,
Dan

Hi I had exactly the same problem same motherboard but with gtx 970  and i5 2500k and I updated the bios and it worked for a wile but then did it again but for me I think its to do with an over clocked cpu, so you could give it a try.
you need to know what version of that motherboard you have, if you look to the top left corner of the board where it says SLI  you will see the REV number, mine is 1.0
When you know what version you have you can go to the gigabyte website and look for your board.
Click on pc and components then motherboard and click Z77 , from there go to page 2 with all versions of that board. (make sure its exact same name as yours GA Z77X D3H as there are other names that look similar and I almost got the wrong one myself)
Go to support and downloads, file type Bios.

From there you can download a bios version.
In the downloads file run to extract, you need the plain white file and once you have it put it on a empty usb memory stick.
You will need to put your old graphics card in for your computer to boot and to get access to the bios.
Once there flash bios F8 on mine and select your usb stick from the list and the file. (it will shut down and boot a few times once done)
IF YOUR computer is over clocked take screen shots of all the bios settings pages and tabs so you can put them back later.

Re: System will not proceed past BIOS screen when GTX 980 is installed 2015/06/27 12:06:16 (permalink)
Instead of starting a new thread I will post my issue in this one since it is related.
I recently installed an new EVGA GTX 970 GPU. My old GTX 570 HD took a crap, and it was time for a new card anyway. The problem I am having is the Gigabyte splash screen hanging for over a minute(with debug code 62-PCH runtime services). After appox. 1.5 minutes the computer goes into the Windows login and works well enough to play games and get online. This differs from many of the articles/forums I have read since it will actually go on into Windows instead of just sitting at the splash screen and never going anywhere.

Before the debug LED gets to 62, the board cycles through a bunch of numbers, and then afterwards goes to "A0" which is what the debug LED would normally be at in my machine. I was going to try to reflash the BIOS to F14 since I am currently using F7 to see if that would help, but I cannot access the BIOS at the splash screen at anytime to update it. I cant use the old card because it will not be stable enough to do a reflash since it causes the system to crash. Something else that happens(that was never an issue before the new card) is that when switching from a game to Windows, the screen will pause for several seconds. Its not really that big of a deal, but I do think it has something to do with my other problem.

-Should I reset the CMOS to see if that helps first? I downloaded the new BIOS to a thumb drive and its ready to go. I just cannot get to the BIOS screen to do anything with it.
Thanks for any help. My system specs in case it may aid in diagnosing my problem:

GA-Z77X-UD5H wifi
i5 2500K
8GB Corsair RAM
128GB Corsair SSD
750 Watt PSU
EVGA GTX 970 SSC
Windows 7 64 bit
353.30 GPU current driver
F7 current mobo BIOS
