I have a Maximus VII Hero board with 16Gb of RAM. (750W PSU), updated bios on board, swapped cables and connectors multiple times
Everything is testing fine until is set my two EVGA GTX 960 SSC 4Gb cards to SLI.
The system will runs and tests fine in SLI until I try to reboot. Then it hangs before it gets to desktop for Win 8.1
Tried a few different drivers on clean installs with same results. I end up using a restore point I had made before I applied the SLI to get it back.
I have been fighting this for a day or two now and i'm open to any suggestions at this point.

Thanks in advance.

    How old is the PSU?

Edit : Have you tried each card individually as well? Do you have a different SLI finger to test? (doubtful it's the cause, but possible.)

Still no luck figuring this issue out. I can play FarCry 4 and Crysis3 for hours but still have to disable SLI for the computer to reboot properly.
I'm not sure if SLI is the culprit or a symptom of another problem.

Have you tried running each card seperate, if they both work nicely on there own, it could be the SLI bridge.

I have done a bit more digging and retrieved a dump log.

On Sun 4/12/2015 4:14:43 AM GMT your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\041115-8171-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: nvlddmkm.sys (nvlddmkm+0x13E978)
    Bugcheck code: 0x116 (0xFFFFE000CB04D4D0, 0xFFFFF80067639978, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000001, 0x5)
    Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
    file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\nvlddmkm.sys
product: NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 347.52
    company: NVIDIA Corporation
description: NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 347.52
Bug check description: This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 347.52 , NVIDIA Corporation).
    Google query: NVIDIA Corporation VIDEO_TDR_ERROR

Hope someone can elaborate on my next move while I research the error.

Bugcheck code: 0x116 can mean there is video display issue. The driver mentioned doesn't really matter (Windows sucks and doesn't know). It's probably a hardware issue.

So like I said earlier, can you test a diffrient SLI bridge?

Yes, I swapped the bridge and still same issue on booting.
    Also tested each card separately.
The thing that bothers me is it only is an issue when booting. I can run SLI and play for hours perfectly. I have run a few benchmark\tests and they work amazingly.
Hate to think I will have to disable SLI everytime I shutdown or restart. :(
Think I will walk away and think about this for a bit.
    I'll try again later today.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

    I am officially stumped.
     - have ran both cards separately with no issues
     - Ran mem tests and stress tests with no problems.
     - Played games like FarCry 4, BF4, and Bioshock at max settings for extended periods with no issues.
     - went through as many suggestions as I could  for the VIDEO_TDR_ERROR but all checked out fine. (very good thread -  ) by Amorphous on the Nvidia forums

I know my PSU has a rating of 62A on the 12V+ rails. I found the cards are rated as 120W but recommend 400W.
Is there a big power draw on booting that would be needed? Runs fine any other time.
    I am stumped

I guess I will just have to remember to turn off SLI every time I shut off my computer.....

Does MB have the latest BIOS? Have you tried running everything sans overclocking? Hmm. Looks like you'll have a good excuse to take advantage of the EVGA upgrade program and just go ahead and get the GTX-970 FTW ... and be done with it :)

I don't think that's something he wanted to hear. Basically what that's saying is he has to put more money down on a "warranty" upgrade because what he purchased didn't work for him. Doesn't sound right. know what I mean?

The cards run great separately. They run great together for that matter. MB was updated.
Still just an issue when you try to boot with SLI enabled and it hangs. I can boot with both cards installed, without SLI,  running fine.
I have been playing with the computer the last few days on and off. No gaming or temp issues so far.
I still have a few things I want to try when I get time.
     - swap power cables to different connections on the PSU
    - I have my old system that has two 560 Ti cards in it. Thinking of swapping with the 960's to test.
Boot logging shows it repeatedly trying to initialize the audio on the 960's that I have no need for. Not sure if this is contributing to my TDR issues on boot.

Work with that, its probably the issue. Little things seem to cause the most havoc! Since you've tested your hardware and it all is running well, that only leaves either a bios setup issue/conflict or windows drivers issue/conflicts. Did you install the whole NVidia driver package? All the 3d drivers, physx, audio etc? What monitor make/model do you have and how many? How are you hooked up to the monitor from the graphics card? Do you use a sound card or onboard audio? When you install/uninstall your nvidia drivers do you use safe mode? Do you cleanup after uninstalls of the drivers?

Any update regarding this problem? I must say I have the exact same problem- Both cards in with SLI off- it boots well. SLI on- won't boot. Usually restarts after loading windows- right before desktop.
Both cards work fantastic with SLI on and individually. I have 2 ACW2 SSC 4GB GTX 960 with the EVGA SLI Bridge and I've tried a different bridge as well.

Seems like a driver issue to me.

It's deffinitly an issue with the cards being applied to SLI and could be a driver issue. However I see you've tried just about everything in the book and I don't know if your gonna fix it ecspecially if others are having the same issue. So now your left with choices and I would say step up to a GTX 980 which has better memory (256) and would probably use less electricity. Not to mention the problems of SLI would be gone along with the heat/furnace action. Keep in mind you only have 90 days from the date you purchased the cards. I say go with the step up, the 960's cost you about $480 and the 980 is only $540. Also the solo 980 would likely outpreform the 960SLI. So for the price of a video game you can get a better card and even be in the game to step up to the 980ti when it comes out (maybe).

If you're unfamiliar with EVGA Step-Up then me or someone else can help you more if you are interested.

I believe it does but you may be required to pay postage to the USA if Australia doesn't have a facility to handle your request. You can also call EVGA 24/7 for assistance and they can likely guide you through the process and tell you their policy for Australia.

Hmmm... If your ticket is refused then maybe you can ask the retailer for an instore credit refund. For example with newegg you can go into their chat rooms and request there instore refund which would be a voucher once they got the product back. Otherwise I would call EVGA regarding the issue and see if they have any new ideas.

I have the same exact issue with my x2 GTX SSC 960 4GB. I could turn on the SLI and play GTA V perfectly fine but I always have to turn off SLI or else it'll hang my Windows 7 at startup. I've reformatted my SSD 5 times and its all the same problem with SLI turned on. I have a feeling it has something to do with the BIOS, I have a Gigabyte Gaming 7 with Bios version F6.

It seems to be a common issue and with the 4gb 960's and you should get about the same performance with a 980 and avoid the SLI issues.  I would try to step up with EVGA or try to get a in store refund before its too late.  I don't know why its happening and maybe its a driver issue that there trying to fix but you can just get a 980 and be done with it.  It doesn't seem like anyone really has a solution either.

Its only $60 more for the 980 so I would take it before the step up expires

You might also want to check on this periodically as its your exact issue.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. I've been racking my brains to try to fix it over the last two weeks.
Looks like I will try to upgrade the two cards.

I would totally get a GTX 980 but I recently bought my PC from CyberPowerPC. I got 2 cards for $108 each so a total of $216 when they had the March Madness sale which I think is a major steal since 1 card already goes for $240. I love my PC and how it's set up... If only this SLI bug would just go away!!!

I have also submitted a support ticket for this issue.
Maybe a bios update could fix it.

Did a bit more digging and the stepup program would be good but, it is only a "one for one" swap. So I would have to swap out both cards and that would end up being more money than I really can afford right now.
I'm hoping EVGA will step up and represent by backing up the cards and make things right.

I've let our Product Team know about this so they can investigate the issue further. Once we have more information, we'll post an update.
