That should get you some more sound - and keep in mind as a fellow Onkyo owner that the volume numbers won't seem "normal".  I run in the 50s under normal TV viewing conditions and often higher on movies.  Completely normal man!

Yeah. The numbers were weird so I added some DB to the Intellivolume or whatever. Makes base volume louder so now normal TV watching is around 30, which i like, then it starts to get loud around 40. 50-60 is hella loud and I dont even want to try the max 80.

I didn't look up the speakers that you have to see but there is a difference between bi-amping and bi-wiring. Also, some receivers display your volume according to reference level meaning that it will show a negative number until you are at "0" which is thx reference level, which is 75db and in my house, that is pretty stinking LOUD. Gets confusing at first but you get used to it. Without an spl meter, who knows what 50 or 80 equates to in db unless the manual states it.

Yeah. Im trying to find the setting to show Db instead of regular stuff.

But heck. Even with just the fronts this is awesome. Floorspeakers dont have much bass if any, but ive got a sub coming anyway.

On Tuesday my stuff comes in. Wont get it set up for a day or two but pics will be here hy saturday.

I need to mount the center speaker above the tv or move the receiver off the tv stand.

I can confirm those speakers are actually bi-ampable and the receiver does support bi-amp as well in 5.1 mode...  Whether it's worth connecting them that way maybe soemone else can comment - I've never done it though cause it's loud enough as is.  The Onkyo receivers now start at 0 and go up from there on the volume control.  They used to have a setting called absolute/relative in the settings but they've taken it out and you can only change it on THX certified models now.

Is your TV on a stand or wall mounted?  I can show you what i did on mine if it's not wall mounted.

My tv is wall mounted. The receiver is too big for the shelves on my stand so its just right on top. I can move the receiver to a moveable stand i have next to the tv but i use that for my keyboard and mouse for my stream pc. So then i couldnt use it for that.

Ive got the fronts, center, and sub hooked up. But no sound coming from center and nothing from sub.

I set it to 3.1 channels and double checked wire connections on center. The sound test plays on all speakers but not when watching tv or anything. So the speakers are hooked up, something just isnt configured properly. Ideas?

Sometimes receivers have different "modes". Such as "Music", "theater", "game" , "headphone" ect ect ect... some of there will only output 2 channels. I would check that setting first. How are you hooking up your tv to your receiver? Do you have it connected to a cable box or something?

Cable box to receiver. Receiver to tv.

Music plays on all channels so maybe that tv channel didnt do surround? It was HBO though. It should.

Also should sub be on normal sub or preamp?

going to need a 12" or 15" subwoofer, preferably with a ported, or band-pass for real bass. I have a question with this... I have a 10" Infinity "Car sub". Is there anything wrong with using it on a home theater system? It's 350 RMS. My intentions are to put the subwoofer into a band-pass enclosed case.

Short answer yes. I wouldn't recommend it but you can. If you put a band-pass box in a home, you are probably going to be disappointed. They are made for small spaces and may be "Loud" in a small space but if you are using it for home theater, it's not going to hit very deep and it is not going to be very musical either.

HBO should have Dolby... Heck even Jeopardy is in Dolby digital here. What did you have the listening mode set to? Often times you have to change a setting in the audio section of the settings on the cable box to enable surround sound. If it is just set to stereo or PCM it won't output surround. If you're watching something that's not surround you can also set it to something like DTS Neo6 or similar to simulate surround.

Where are you seeing the subwoofer settings? I can't seem to find that setting on mine but I would think you want Normal.

On the back of the receiver. You can plug the rca cable into a subwoofer preamp output or adifferent plug that says subwoofer out.

On my xfinity cable box in the settings the audio was set to stereo oytput for hdmi. I switched it to surround but it didnt seem like that worked. Ill play around qith the settings again. It was late when i set it all up last night. Cant really test it that late id wake up the neighborhood.

Music played correctly though in surround. It was just the cable.

Ported would be better but with a 10" speaker, you are not going to get a whole lot. Unless you know what you are doing, you may want to head over to the AVS forums to see if you can find some plans for a 10" ported box. There are also several programs out there to configure your dimensions, tuning and such. Not sure how low you can tune a 10" woofer but I imagine that whatever you do, it's going to end up needing to be a near-field sub to get the most out of it.

Got it...  I thought you were looking for a setting.  Those both are the same port - they just label them funny.  The output is identical because you can connect 2 subwoofers to the receiver - that's where the ".2" in 7.2 channel comes from.

As far as the cable box - there are a couple possible factors here...  There may be some other audio options in the menus for "digital out" or something along those lines.  You want to make sure that PCM is not set on any of them.  There is also another possibility - which I ran into myself when I had a different provider...  Some of the cable boxes do not like to output Dolby Digital over HDMI either by design or cable co limitations.  The way around this is you leave the HDMI connected as-is and then run an optical TOSLINK cable from the cable box to one of the inputs on the back of the receiver.  Once you do this you can go into the settings and bind whichever optical port you use to the CBL/SAT input so that the optical audio overrides the HDMI audio signal.  I would suggest maybe searching whatever model of cable box you have to see if it's a known issue where the HDMI won't put out surround.  My first box was a Cisco that worked fine - but when it died they gave me a "Pace" box and it had all sorts of audio issues.  One of these days the cable companies will get this stuff together and stop putting out the feature gimped cable boxes!

I googled it and it seems the Comcast X1 Xfinity boxes don't like to output surround on HDMI. Might have to grab an optical cable.

It's really frustrating they are allowed to do this and more reason why I LOVE my Tivo box!  It's still worth all the agony the cable company tries to put me through for using a CableCard!

I remember when consumer audio stuff started coming out with toslink and everyone thought it was the coolest to have a "fiber" audio connection. Then Hdmi specs got to the point where those optical cables all ended up with all the rest of the rca cables, power adapters and coax connectors in a box at a garage sale. Too bad because I like the smaller connector of Toslink over hdmi. Just seems like it fits better too. With that being said, with what you are doing, you won't notice a difference.

Not only that but the Toslink cables are SOOO thin compared to HDMI or any other cables for that matter.  It would make things a lot neater and easier to control the wires - there's no reason they couldn't have put video over the fiber but I suppose the optical TX/RX components get expensive especially if you end up using laser.

You won't get much bass out of those towers - the drivers are just too small.  Gone are the days of the common REAL tower speakers with 2x 12" woofers each in them! But back then subs weren't as common either.

Is your TV on a stand or wall mounted?  I can show you what i did on mine if it's not wall mounted.

going to need a 12" or 15" subwoofer, preferably with a ported, or band-pass for real bass. I have a question with this... I have a 10" Infinity "Car sub". Is there anything wrong with using it on a home theater system? It's 350 RMS. My intentions are to put the subwoofer into a band-pass enclosed case.

Dont hijack my thread! Lol.

Was not exactly my intentions, but decided to ask away about subwoofers with enclosures since you were mentioning about bass anyways. I didn't think it would hurt much. Plus I read the subject thread as the "suggestions thread". Sorry.

Wasn't exactly going to use a 10", but an X (yeaaaahh) has a subwoofer of mine that hasn't been taken out of the box (brand new) from Infinity. It's a really nice subwoofer with a lot of punch. I would have to make the right measurements to get the frequencies I need, but it's definitely doable. That is if the X will give me my sub back . Otherwise I will think about a 15" subwoofer. my fronts are decent. I also don't have that big of a room, and my fronts/center are fairly close, at max 6 feet away. thoughts?

Dang, that's close. If your room isn't that big, a 15" sub would work great. If I was in your shoes, I would build a Marty Micro cube. It only takes 1 sheet of MDF and they are dead simple to build with great power. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-diy-speakers-subs/1648673-martysub-faq.html

If it was me, and you don't think you will ever need another passive sub, I would get
http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-um15-22-15-ultimax-dvc-subwoofer-2-ohms-per-coil--295-514

$200
https://www.amazon.com/Behringer-NU1000DSP-iNuke-Power-Amplifier/dp/B005EHIN3A

$200

With the sheet of Mdf, cables, paint, ect, you can build a sweet sub for under $500 that will blow away many consumer subs.

When it comes to audio the "issue" is never "fixed" - just like with PCs - you'll get the upgrade bug at some time, but at least audio stuff doesn't go obsolete nearly as fast!   So are you happy that you ended up putting together your own system as compared to an all in one box and are you happy with the system (so far) in general?  Because that is what matters!
