Sure enough, after receiving my new 580 tonight and getting everything ready to go, my display adapter's refresh rate settings went back to 59Hz despite showing 60Hz in the NCP.  I posted in the 200's forum while using my backup card how to go about fixing this in case anyone else is having the issue.  (Video card constantly sounds @ full load or making too much noise running @59Hz and is fixed by making sure all 3 settings locations show 60Hz: Display Adapter, NCP, & In-Game settings) NCP=NVidia Control Panel

-Create a custom resolution with manual timings, and set the Hz to "60.001".  For the 580 I had to go back in to my display adapter and apply the 60Hz option twice after the custom settings were done in NCP.

For more information on this, and the original post in the 200's thread with more detailed instructions go to the following link:
http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=963127&mpage=1#963127

If this helps at least 1 person, then it has served its purpose.  Please no responses like "Oh don't cry about 59Hz because it's probably 59.97Hz & Windows rounds up". If people encounter the same problem as me, and this solution resolves it, then let it be.

The Windows 7 service pack 1 should have fixed this. If you have SP1 and still have the problem let me know please.

I had that problem with my 465 GTX. Seems fixed in my 560 GTX Ti (JUST double checked and it says its now 60hz)

@RJohnson11:  Yes, I have Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 + all available updates.  I ran in to this problem both while I was using my backup card (evga285ssc) and when I got my 580 tonight.  Both times I had to use the fix that I posted here to help the others.  The fix worked identical for both cards, except that on the 580, I had to manually set and apply 60Hz two times within my displayer adapter's advanced settings after I performed the fix inside NVidia Control Panel.

Feel free to request any additional relevant information.

@Squall_Rinoa86:  That's great that you didn't need to apply the fix with your card ;D.  But with your old card, were you also having the problem that I mentioned where when running games @59Hz your card would make extra noise or sound as if it was over working-- but didn't display those symptoms after getting everything to properly display 60Hz?

Didn't really notice the noise my case is pretty loud as is but i couldn't get it to switch to 60hz for the life of me.

No it didn't, because there was nothing to fix. The Display reports a mode of 59.94 and windows exposes 59 and 60 but persists 59.

When the UI asks what mode we’re in we tell it we’re in 59, as you see. This is the issue we had back at the end of February when we were trying to make the last minute fixes but in the end we decided that it was too late. So it is by design for now.”

    The MSFT Article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2006076

A workaround is implemented on the driver side, Release 265 had a partial fix implemented which made most games see 59 as 60. (only 60 was exposed but the mode was 59hz)
R270 finishes the job and makes any games not working with R265 work correctly.

The only real issue with this refresh rate is that locking exactly to 60fps incurred tearing.

@Squall_Leonhart: Lots of info there awesome post.  I'm wondering if it was my monitor (that uses a 'Generic PnP' driver) that allowed the 59Hz problem to persist?  It's fixed now, using above method.  But maybe if Asus had put out monitor drivers it would have helped to resolve things without having to time my Hz .001 faster.  The exact model + model number displays fine in NCP.

its not the lack of monitor driver, it would still report 59.94 from the display itself so only 59 would be set.

...technically in the new drivers 59.94 is still what is set but the driver does a good job of lying to games with the 60 value.

I'm having a hard time understanding why 1 Hz matters to anyone.  If the actual refresh rate is actually 59.94 Hz regardless, why does it matter if we see 59 or 60 Hz reported?

And why do we have this same topic posted in both the 200 series and 500 series section?

Re:Stuck @ 59Hz refresh rate fix for NVidia cards (EVGA GTX 580 confirmed works) 2011/04/17 01:03:25 (permalink)
@ty_ger07: There is an issue in a number of hardware configurations with people stuck w/ a 59Hz refresh rate in their display settings / NCP / games.  It causes the video card to emit strange noises, sound like it's constantly @ max capacity when it shouldn't be, or otherwise make abnormal sounds.  And when the display adapter, NCP, and the games show 60Hz; the sounds go away, or go back to the normal level of functioning.  It's posted in both sections, because I personally encountered it while using both my backup card (285ssc) and my new 580.  I mentioned in the 200s thread that I would post a link/shortened version in the 500s if I encountered the same thing.  If that's considered a problem, or a double-post then by all means request it to be deleted; I'm just trying to make the fix known, and it has helped at least 1 other Evga forum goer so far.  I didn't see a comprehensive section for all series of cards or I'd have just posted there.  I'm new to the Evga forums ;)

@Squall_Leonhart: Like I've mentioned before, neither the Win7ProX64 SP1 or latest drivers on either card (using 270.51 for the 580 atm) were nice enough to at least "lie" as you put it, to any of my games to allow a 60Hz option to be set or even shown =).  So when Windows rounds down, then setting 60.001 fixes it, or at least hides the 59.94 well enough to not cause the abnormal sounds to emanate from my cards.  I just figured if there was a driver specific to my display adapter other than 'generic' it would help communicate the necessary information there; which out of the 3 locations of refresh rate settings I've mentioned, is the most troublesome to make 60Hz stick.

The 59Hz more than likely doesn't affect/bother the larger majority, but it was a big enough issue to be addressed by MS & NV/ATI and the topic of many forum posts when I last googled it. I don't mean to come off as rude in any way here, but I'm not really looking to argue or debate the issue.  I just wanted to post a fix/work-around for it for the people who do encounter and have trouble with it.

lol,,,yeah just get a 120 hz and be done with it.i had that with my gtx 295 on a regular 60hz lcd but never noticed any issues,in fact i just left it the way it was.. but every time i was in the nvcp i saw it set to 59 i would set it back to 60 just for spite, next time it was there again..funny enough in vista 64 bit it was always 60,[yes i still have vista on another drive] does it affect your computing experience?

I had this issue,.....turned out it was my monitor going goofy, if i used the DVI port i would be stuck at 59hz and games seemed sluggish, (it also would only install generic pnp)i then used a DVI to standard VGA adapter and plugged it in to the pretty little blue plug that never gets used and bam!(recognized my monitor correctly!)- 60 hz and gaming was good again. Tried it again thinking i was crazy and sure enough it had something to do with my monitors port, 4 different cables same issue, but ...Old school blue worked flawless...go figure.

The Windows SP1 fix should try to round the figure up. So if the refresh rate is 59.94 the number should show as 60. I would assume based on that premise that 59.49 would round down to 59.

@Johnny Quest: Hehe you said it best.. go 120Hz (+ 3d) and be done with stuff like this ;D.

@415 Krunch: That's weird what kind of monitor was that?  I'm wondering how many people that were stuck using the generic PnP driver for whatever reason were among those who encountered the issue.  ( ;( Asus doesn't have a driver for my monitor )

rjohnson11: Please read all above posts ;) The 59.94Hz you mention could show up as 59 or 60 depending on the hardware config (59Hz for sure with those prone to having the issue w/ it).  Using 60.001 will ensure that it will round down to 60Hz and the problem is solved until an official fix *that works* is rolled out.

    cheers

There was no fix in SP1. I have the entire list of changes and hotfixes and this was not one of them.

@Squall-leonhart: I guess I was fortunate that my games still functioned with the issue.  But I wasn't going to let them run while my card was making those noises, hence the fix.  Can't remember which driver I was using on the backup card, but I still had to perform this fix on the 580 despite having the 270.51 drivers.  Those were the first 580 drivers to touch my system when the card was installed too.

@dutchrend its a Asus VW224u "it is bizzare" but it works flawless in the VGA port. If i go to DVI it wont even recognize that its capable of 1680X1050...instead it shows max of 1400x900, when i force it, it wont let it go above 50hz, if i custom make the resolution at 60hz it always shows 59 and looks like crap. But, with the adapter in VGA it works like a champ. "when i first got this monitor it would work at 1680x1050 in the DVI but then got retarded over time".

415krunch, use moninfo to dump the monitor capabilities report and post it in the official 270.51 feedback forum so manuelg can file a bug.

Its a monitor issue on mine "its a gameroom pc" running two 8800 gt's. on 266 drivers "it happens on all drivers" and it happens wheni i hook it up to my 5870 setup. I would be curious to see what happens if he hooks it up to the vga port. Just for the heck of it.

its an issue that can be fixed by incorporating an edid override into the driver for that display.

    and it will,

SP1 does not change anything, the advanced display settings still lists 59/60 and persists 59, but the nvcpl displays 60 and fixes a bunch of games.

@Squall_Rinoa86:  Have you tried the fix I've posted that will get your Nvidia Control Panel, Display Adapter Advanced Settings, and Games to all show 60Hz?  Essentially you create a custom profile within the Nvidia Control Panel and set manual timings to input "60.001" as your refresh rate, and then go in to your display adapter's advanced settings and make sure that it too shows 60Hz.  You may have to select 60Hz and Apply a couple times until it finally stays put at 60Hz under your display adapter's settings, you may also need to restart your computer, but afterwards your display adapter settings, Nvidia Control Panel, and games will all reflect 60Hz and you will no longer be stuck at 59Hz.
If you need more detailed instructions, I left a very detailed instruction list in the 200's forum while using the card that I first had to perform the fix with.  Those instructions are here: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=963127&mpage=1#963127 .  *note, while I did not have to restart my computer, I did have to choose and apply 60Hz *two* times within my display adapter's advanced settings before it would stick.  Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

btw, the windows advanced display settings still shows 60 and 59, setting to 60 will change the value reported by dxdiag and other apps, but the driver will still be at 59.94.

This is only an issue for games that are badly made and  considers a refresh rate as a whole number (seeing 59 as 59.00 instead of 59.94)

nothing i have played recently has a problem with it, but BC2 is known to.

^This. (As always very informative, squall_leonhart) Yeah pretty much anything that runs off the Battlefield 2 engine or its 'sequels' + World in Conflict, and Company of Heroes games.  So most of your newer titles will be just fine.  There is an extremely helpful forum post regarding refresh rates, this issue specifically, and more in-depth problems regarding 59Hz that I know of but I wasn't sure if we're allowed to link to other forums from here so I've held off on that.  If that's OK, I can drop the link to it and you'll find much more information over there than I care to type out .
    cheers,

@dutchrend I found a link for old set of drivers for you monitor
    http://www.latestdriversupdate.com/driver/71779.html
but ASUS has none on their website.  One other thing to maybe try is check in the NVCP and see if it sees the monitor as an HDTV and maybe try switching it back to a monitor w/its native res.

@Silverdragon68:  Thank you for the link, I will definitely bookmark that and possibly proceed with installing the driver.  Everything is working wonderfully so you can understand my hesitation :).  The NCP detects it as a computer monitor judging by the icon and correct identity of the display's brand & model.  However, while I was just in there double-checking, I noticed that NCP is no longer displaying the correct monitor brand & model.  Now it is displaying "Ancor Communic..." with no other information to explore.  When I go to screen resolutions from the desktop right-click menu, the UI there displays my correct brand/model.  It always displayed correctly there, as well as the NCP.  I'm wondering what could have changed in my NCP recently for it to not display the correct identity as before.  My only guess is when the 270 series beta drivers became a certified release, and I installed that release over the beta drivers I had been using.  Otherwise everything is fine though.  If I proceed with the monitor drivers, I'll report back any change in findings.

Apologies for waking up an old thread, but I have the 59 HZ thing going on with my new GTX 560/285.62 drivers as well.  I tried the custom res suggestion but cannot set a custom refresh rate of 60.001 - the 'test' button will not un-grey and so I can't go any further.

    Any ideas here?
