Since you're looking for more of an upright position here are a few recommendations: Harley Dyna (street bob, wide glide, etc), Honda Shadow (750cc or higher), Kawasaki Vulcan, Suzuki Boulevard, or Triumph Bonneville. Out of these Harley would be the most expensive as they tend hold resale value extremely well. They also tend to be heavy and antiquated so repair is fairly simple. Most of the other bikes are going to be water cooled which wont get nearly as hot especially if you're sitting in traffic.

If a cruiser is not your style then you may want to look at some standards like a Yamaha FZ-07, Suzuki Bandit, or Triumph Street Triple. Keep in mind there are many, many other bikes out there just gotta find what suits you best. Here are a few quick ones I found near St. Louis:

This Kawasaki Vulcan 800cc has a great sound to it, from what Ive read on the Vulcan, sounds like it would siut me very nice, and looks comfortable.  Looks like doing a leather saddle and bags for the Vulcans wouldnt be too much of a pain.
