Alucard666

So removed the 'bad stick' and reformated my windows and was installing drivers and programs... the noticed now I apparently have 4.00gb installed with only 1.99gb usuable....****?!?

Is this my board or cpu ?!?!?!?1

Do you have a spare CPU?

At this point I would vote for trying another CPU, don't worry about the stock cooler that is not happening, not the problem,
with your symptoms. But it is possible that your CPU memory controller has just partially shut down...

Try a 2nd CPU and see if you get back to at least having 4GB RAM, since you apparently have 1 bad DIMM
as it stands now. Of, if you can, try all 3 DIMMs and see if they show up with another CPU. and if all 6GB show up then you know it's a bad CPU memory controller.

Either way, you've got a hardware problem that is developing as we write these messages, apparently.

a flexed board will do the same thing.

Hi Johnksss, yes, I am familiar with the EVGA Staff's predilection for blaming
problems of all sorts on after market coolers, and how we tighten them down too
much and warp the boards, or so I have been told when I called for assistance back
in the summer. Needless to say I dismissed that reasoning quickly! IMO they are always
looking for the easy, pat answer and way out of issues, and that is about No. 1 of their standard "that's the cause" answers.

I have seen boards that were messed up from over tightening even the stock coolers, so go figure!
Maybe the board was bent all along, yah? I don't mean to dismiss your comment lightly by any means,
it's simply that it's one of their "pat answers" for all types of problems with CPU's, bent pins, and warped boards, that is all.

About this issue here though, he's seeing a consistent degrading of memory available no matter how much
he installs, to wit the now "new problem" of having just 2GB RAm available when he's installed 4GB RAM.

That is why I'd like him to try another CPU, and see if that is the cause after all, and end this real quickly...

If it's not the CPU, then his board is either bent/warped, has bent pins, or it's just plain shorted out around the DIMM sockets somewhere, IMO those are the 3 possibilities, and a fresh CPU right now would eliminate that as a cause straight away and quickly.

I hope he *has* a spare CPU to try!

I am sure we all mean well, and are trying things we know to have been problematical for this sort of anomaly, but
at times the most obvious of things is the root cause, and sometimes even the OP can't see it for the forest and the trees!

have you checked in msconfig?  Under boot and then advanced options...make sure the maximum memory is unchecked.

PS is that miramar in San Diego you live in or somewhere else?

It is unchecked and no, its miramar florida

Later gents,
rexrzer77

sounds like you got issues.

1: we try the easy stuff first
2: if all else fails, then we ask for an rma
3: if he had another cpu we would have asked him to try that already
4: he never said they turned him down for rma to begin with.
5: not all of us like to rma because of USER ERROR then like to blame the product. so we try different things first.

oh look...moving the cpu reclaimed his lost 2 gigs. which puts us right back to where he was.
side note: not every one you talk to on the phone there is a noob..some of them are enthusiast and know quite allot, considering they run with some of the top over clockers as well...(look at the whole picture and not just your side of it..)

if your going to try a bios...try the s61j. it seems to be the most stable from what bios testers have said. 44 and 49 still have memory issues.

I can vouch that over tightening the CPU cooler can cause the RAM to go undetected, as well as ram not being set to the manufacturers spec. The motherboard was seeing 6GB as 4GB, and 4GB as 2GB despite rotating them in the right slots.
If that don't help, try a pencil eraser and use it to clean the ram contacts then reseat them a few times.

My E760 started doing all this crazy stuff too one day. First, I lost one stick of memory, but then I couldn't overclock anymore, even with a whole new set of ram. In the end, I ended up RMA'ing absolutely everything, the cpu, motherboard, and ram since nobody knew exactly which component was to blame. I suggest you do the same otherwise you may be *troubleshooting* this for a very long time.

Ya I hate RMA's..... I'm still waiting for corsair to send back my faulty dominators to me....and its going on 2 weeks now, I'll test those when they come in. If it's still a no go I guess I'll have to RMA my classified :-(, but how would tyhat work would I then receive a 760 instead?

Also does anyone have the S61J bios?

Bear in mind that with ram testing, a single stick may not boot, two is the minimum.

Power down, unplug tower from wall outlet, revert any jumpers back to stock settings, pull the battery, clear the CMOS via jumper, power back up, then set the BIOS back to stock Auto config, but key in the timings and voltage listed on the spec sheet that came with the RAM. Download and install the latest motherboard drivers from the manufacturer, update Windows7 X64 and reboot.

After doing this, do you still have the ram go undetected?

If you are able to test the RAM individually or in pairs, have you determined which sticks or ram slots are defective? I'd put a piece of tape and label each stick #1, #2, and #3 and test them in pairs in the correct slots. Then jot down on a piece of paper which sticks have been inserted into what slot and tested. Just for added assurance, test all slots and sticks twice and log it down. Via process of elimination, do this to determine whether or not a single motherboard memory slot is faulty.

I'll try that out tonight.....I got to head over to work...

But I did flash several bios' I tired 49, 44 S22 and S22D... I'm on 22D now as I remember loving its stability..... with all 3 sticks inserted the system still reads only 2 sticks at start-up and windows still says 6gb are installed and only 3.99 are usable.... I'm sure its go to be the memory.... really hoping its not a mobo slot.

That is the exact same thing that happened to me. Turns out nothing needed RMA. I am taking side that all sticks are good, and so is the board. Keep us posted on your progress.

Finally got my corsairs back... *only 2 and a half weks of RMA time...ughhhhh....* and turns out it was the memory as my Corsairs read as 6.00gbs as they should. Dunno **** happend to the mushkins as they two had the same issue.... I blame the bios flashing....

Now my Mushkin is on its way back to the egg for credit... Hopefully if all goes well I can keep these corsairs for Back up and use the credit to get some Gskill Tridents :-)

Absolutely. My 760 does the same thing.

What i did for trouble shooting and what I found.

Make a long story short, for my situation, it has to do with over-clocking.  I went from 133 and tried 150 bus clock (bclock) and that is the only bios setting that does it for me.  I did a reboot session testing every single bios change until I came to the bus clock and sure enough that's what did it.

My board's Serial Number: 1021410760002629

Task manage tells me I have 4087 GB or Ram and the windows experience says I have 6.00gb insalled and only 3.99GB usable and the system when posting says I have 4 gb installed instead of 6gb but elite tells me I have 6gigs... ****?!

Which is it??!?!?!?

All I've done is a few windows updates.

you probably have the 32bit verion of windows you need the 64bit

While memory limitations could cause a similar problem as this, it's usually not caused by having the wrong bit operating system. It's a pretty well-documented problem with many people with many types of hardware and 64-bit OSes having this problem. The only thing in common seems to be that it's an X58 related issue...

Let us know if the problem is permanently gone or not. for some, this problem is intermittent (on every cold boot only and not warm restart etc. etc.)

Started it up this morning after it say for 7 - 8 hrs of being off and no issue.  Still seeing 6G total.  No 3.99 usable error.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the voltages.  It would make sense in my particular case.

My 759 did the 3.99 usable after flashing to the new bios, so I flashed  it back to the older bios which fixed the problem. Re flashed to the new 70 bios again and all 6gb's are still there.  Strange is all I can say

If that don't help, try a pencil eraser and use it to clean the ram contacts then reseat them a few times.

NAK on that one.  It may work for a while, but can lead to trouble.

There's sulfur in the rubber compound in pencil erasers.  Or at least there was, maybe things have changed.   They clean up gold-flashed contacts nicely, but the sulfur  can cause the gold to eventually tarnish (or whatever the term is for gold) and can cause the connection to actually get worse over time.  Other precious-metal flashed contacts may have similar problems w/sulfur.

Back in the day, we used art-gum or "ink" erasers - although ink erasers may be too abrasive - to clean gold-flashed contacts.  Otherwise, I'd use alcohol on a swab.  Just barely moistened and holding the RAM w/the contacts down so nothing can drip into the works.  There are also "electrical" cleaners available at the hobby shop.  Don't use one that talks about "lubricating" contacts.  They may have additives that will also cause problems.

Sorry about the long screed.  How about "the old guy says don't use pencil erasers."

Z.
