Hi guys,

I just upgraded from 4-way Titans to 4-way 980 Classifieds - when I set up SLI on one screen, everything works great with a big increase in the 3dmark score, so the hardware looks good. However any time I try to activate surround, it immediately slows to a crawl. It takes about 2 minutes to activate, and then any mouse movement takes 10 seconds or more to register, keystrokes don't register at all.. Basically the computer becomes unusable. I've tried two different drivers, and the same happens, and now I can't think of anything else to try. Everything was fine on the Titans. Any ideas?

What are your full system specs? Is your motherboard BIOS current?

Asus Rampage IV Extreme, 3960x, Win 7 64-bit. Just updated bios and chipset to latest - thanks for the tip - however problem persists. No problem when using 3 displays in non-surround, no problem in using 1 display with SLI enabled, but using surround to span across displays makes computer completely non-responsive as soon as I click enable surround. It's not a complete crash - if I take my time I can move the mouse one bit at a time, wait for the cursor to move, and after a few minutes finally get the cursor onto the disable surround button to switch back. But it's unusable.

Do the following for me and report back if you're still having a problem...

#1 Perform a clean boot of windows.

#2 Perform a clean installation of video drivers.
    1. Uninstall Precision X/Afterburner if installed, make sure to select "no" to saving profiles if asked. Reboot the machine.
    2. Download & save graphics driver 347.09 to your desktop. Run it after download is complete.
    3. Select custom advanced install, under custom installation options uncheck all options except the physx system software, if you are using audio over HDMI please select the HD Audio driver, if you have a 3D capable monitor and would like to use 3D at some point select the 3D Vision driver also, check mark perform clean install, then click next to install the driver, reboot when asked.

    Thanks for helping!

I typically do the 2nd part each time - uninstall PrecisionX, do a full clean advanced install, and only select the main driver and PhysX, nothing else.

However the clean boot is something I hadn't thought of doing before, so I did it this time, exactly following your steps.

    Unfortunately, still the same problem..

Best advice I could give you at this time would be to report this problem to NVIDIA so they can get it figured out and patched in the next driver update. Report your problem here.

Thanks for trying. I'll leave them a message.. I'm also going to try the earliest drivers to see if that works, and then guess I'll try and do a clean windows install, and try each card separately..

In case anyone is interested, I have been able to get it to work but through no particular repeatable way. I found that by shifting my monitor cables around the DVI-D ports on the cards, after I open control panel but before clicking "enable surround", I was able to get it to work. If I have to go in and change settings again, then it goes wrong again. So I seem to have it working, and now I'm not touching any of the settings - just in case. Definitely a driver problem..

Odd. What happens when you shutdown or reboot the PC?

Strangely it's fine - restarts and starts up without any issue. The drivers are the same, the hardware is the same, the monitors are plugged into cards 1,2 and 4, and yet now that it's set up it's all working. It's just the switching into it that seems to throw it off, but not if you follow the step of moving the monitor cables around.
