Thanks for putting the guide together. I recently refreshed my X58 build and used it to get a higher overclock with lower voltage. It helped me get a grasp on what I was doing vs just plugging numbers into the bios.

Could we give this nice guide a sticky??
It is a very well written easy overclocking guide and IMO that is way better than this "here is a template which works for me, so it should work for you as well". Everybody who isn't a noob in OC knows that every chip is a bit different, different hardware needs different Voltage and so on.
With this guide people will learn a bit about overclocking and there is a good chance that it will lead into the right direction and you will have less BSODs and less danger to overheat the PC.

I made a simple request to make this very helpful guide a sticky but it looks like  that even an answer is too much from the MODS.

Re:Simple i7 Overclocking for Dummies :) 2013/04/12 07:16:54 (permalink)
Hello there, I hope this thread is still somewhat being followed.

I have a problem with overclocking my i7 920 D0 to 3.85 GHz. My PC has been overclocked to 3.36 GHz, and I've been running stable at that speed for a few months now. No issues whatsoever.

After that, I decided I'd try and OC my i7 to 3.85 GHz (I know, cocky, but yeah) and it worked, thanks to this guide. Or at least, I thought it did. I ran 30 LinX tests, all successful. And 3 hours of Prime, without any crashes. And my PC worked without issues for about 4 days. After that, I suddenly got a warning message at POST, stating "Warning! Now System is in safe mode. Please re-setting CPU/Memory in CMOS".

So it's most likely due to a bad OC, since I never got the issue while I was at 3.36 GHz. But I'm wondering if anyone knows where this error might originate? I'm really stumped as a newbie to overclocking.Any pointers at all would be most appreciated.

I'm using the following set-up:
Motherboard: EVGA X58 Classified 3
CPU: Intel i7 920 D0
GPU: Dual EVGA GTX 580 SLI
RAM: Corsair TR3X6G1600C9 3x2GB
PSU: Corsair AX1200

If any additional information is needed, feel free to ask.

P.S.: I tried 3.6GHz now, and I got stable. (according to LinX and Prime) I want to see if I'll get the error message with my current OC as well.

No Jim112 you can't until you reach 10 to 15 posts. The purpose of this is to try and reduce spamming.

Probably not at 2600MHz, 2000-2200MHz if you're lucky.
My samsung's can only get to 2200MHz 9-10-10-27 1T 1.6v even though they could probably do 2400MHz+ easy on a Z77/X79 board.
