Edit: I copied what I put in the previous post that I guess you couldn't see since it looks like I edited about the same time you were posting the reply.

62C is the highest after 50+ LinX.

Previously I was running 4125 MHz and my highest was 82c so that tells me that my voltages were way to high on my previous over clock despite it running stable through LinX.

This time around I am aiming for anywhere between 4000 and 4030 and then I will call it a day.

The simplest fix for you would be to turn off turbo mode because that increases heat.  It would alter your clock speed, but that is the sacrifice you make for lower temps when getting to 4000+ MHz.

Also you can up the QPI PLL VCore which will allow you to lower the CPU VTT.  Not sure how that affects heat, that would be something you might want to ask Chronic next time he checks in.

My ultimate goal is to be able to hit 4000 MHz with VDroop enabled.

Yea VTT is a CPU voltage so it will add some heat to the Core temps. Just not as much as Vcore will.

Knotfan1234... Your settings look fine to me. Only way to get those temps down would be to lower VTT and Vcore. But if its not stable then you will have to put them back. You can try raising CPU PWM and VTT PWM to help  you lower the Vcore and VTT. The higher the pwm the lower the voltage, usually.

Gwill... are you running a x20 multiplier without Turbo Mode? That is usually a big no no and requires more Vcore to get stable. Other than that everything looks ok. You can definitely lower the CPU PLL to about 1.65 and remain stable. Im sorry I must not have seen your Template before, it must have been a few posts back. Running 4ghz With Vdroop shouldnt be a problem. You are just going to need about .05 more on the vcore than you do with vdroop off.

I am running a 21x multiplier with a BCLK of 183.

Is it better to run with VDroop or without VDroop?  I know that one makes the voltage drop and the other makes it increase, but overall which is better for the hardware longterm or does it really matter?

Its better to have With Vdroop. Vdroop is a safety feature to stop the voltages from spiking too high. If you read the exact voltages in real time during load you would see why.

Re:Simple i7 Overclocking for Dummies :) 2010/05/04 22:57:29 (permalink)
Yeah I have noticed that they go up and down a lot and very sporadically.

As you mentioned in that last post, if I up my VCore .05 which would make it 1.28125, I should be able to do that stable with VDroop enabled?

If I drop the CPU PLL to 1.65 as you mentioned would that still be enough for running at 4 GHz?  I am going to test it either way, but I figured I would ask you anyway since you have more experience over clocking that I do.

Edit:
I've actually changed the BLCK to 193 so that the processor is now set at 4060 MHz.  I upped the voltage .05 like said and that took my VCore to 1.28125v.  I left the CPR PLL at auto which is 1.800v since I upped the speed.  When I got to the desktop I ran LinX and it crashed in about 30 seconds.  I got error 0x0000001E which I assume was because it wasn't getting enough VCore.  I have VDroop turned on and the CPU VTT is still at +100mV.  I noticed when I got back to the desktop and started another LinX run that the voltage at idle is 1.270 and spikes to 1.282 which would be fine, but then suddenly it will drop to 1.247 and 1.258 which are probably the reason for it crashing.  I am not sure, but I will run some more tests to see if I get another BSOD.

Well did a little bit more testing and was able to get it to run stable at 3.9 GHz @1.30v with VDroop enabled.  Under load the voltage was 1.258v and spiked to 1.27v a couple times so now I am going to lower the voltage a couple notches and see how long I can get it.

Thanks a lot for all your advice Chronic, it's much appreciated.

Well after much testing and tinkering I was able to hit my goal perfectly.

I said I did not want to go over 4 GHz and my final clock came out to be 4000.12 MHz @1.30v.  Max temps on the four cores were 74/72/69/74 which is a little higher than I wanted.  I was aiming for 70 across the board, but once I tinker with voltages after letting it run for a while I am sure I can drop those temps to where I want them.

Even with a good 700PSU from Cougar I can reach this.
Thanks so much!

smanatt. I try again http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=5247
or look for memory frequency guide at the stickies. Sorry for that.
For now, my machine is surviving prime95 and superpi. Vantage doesn´t look so good yet. Lot of errors but no BSOD.
Prime gives me about 92 celsius average on all cores after a while. Maybe too hot, but we are having a hot summer in Germany with up to 38c.
I am running Gskill Memory and will post my settings within a few days.
It will be interesting for Gskill owners with 12MB.
Thanks to this forum and all of your experience you share!

Hey everybody. I'm kind of disappointed with the lack of blue ribbons I have. I've been on these forums for about 2 years now and helped a ton of people with troubleshooting issues and overclocks. I'm not trying to be a glutton or anything saying "I WANT MORE RIBBONS". I know EVGA doesn't just throw out ribbons to anyone, but I certainly feel I've been skipped over quite a bit. So if my guide here has truly helped you, or if you PM'd me on steam or EVGA and I helped you, please refer me to a mod for a blue ribbon.  Thanks! Happy Overclocking!

Set HT to ON if you are using windows 7
Set HT to OFF if you are using XP or Vista as they DO NOT support Hyper Threading.

XP and Vista DO support Hyper-Threading Technology since Pentium 4 days. Why do you say they are not supported?

Maybe I am missing some information. I do think this is a good guide for beginners, just want the facts cause I use Vista 64 bit and seems to be using all eight threads.

Hey Chronic, I feel your pain man. You definitely deserve them!

I put a lot of work into couple of threads here in the last 3 months or so, that I thought for sure would get some, but nadda... not that geting a BR is the only reason I have posted here in the past, or for the aforementioned threads, but I was somewhat surprised when they didn't.

Hopefully you will get recognized more in the future! You have been a great contributor to these forums.

Most of the benchmarks I've seen have shown that HT ON in Vista or XP is just not worth the extra heat and voltage. It varied from a very small increase in performance to actually losing performance.

   Hello every one.
Well this is my very frist try at overclocking. so if any one wants to give me some feedback on this, good or bad it dont matter, i would would apprecate it.  i followed the guide..well what i could understand that is :-/ .. and this is what i came up with. its stable and runs great but its slower in booting up then it used to be. some time ago i talked to a guy at EVGA...had some problems with the frist MB i got from them...and he told me to set my memroy to 8-8-8-24 2t. after that it ran great, and the boot up time was super fast. averaged around 35.7 sec load time, give or take 3 sec. now its around 1 to 1 1/2 minutes. should i be worried about this, or am i just being way too picky?  and bty...this is all on a stock fan that came with the cpu. this config only raised my temps about 10c across the board. i ran prime 95 for 12 hours and there was no problems.

Usually when you're overclocking you get a ton BSOD's here and there. That can mess up the windows boot time a lot. Try using a registry defrag and CCleaner to clean out junk files. Run them in Safemode if you can.

I use this program http://www.winmend.com/registry-defrag/

If you had trouble understanding anything in my guide please let me know so I can go through it and possibly make it easier to understand.

Also try this. In the start menu search bar type msconfig. In the general tab select diagnostic startup and hit ok. Restart your PC and it should boot up quicker this time. Once in windows run CCleaner and the run Winmend Reg Defrag. Once that is done open msconfig again and put it back to Normal startup. If you want you can go into the services tab and click "Hide all microsoft services", It will leave you with services that you don't really need and you can un-check most of the ones that you don't use. Don't worry they will still startup when needed even though you disabled them. Also go to the startup tab and disable a few things if you like, however these will no longer startup at boot so make sure you disable the things u don't use.

thanks for the fast replie. i tryed the things you suggested last night and maybe i just got lucky, but i only had 2 BSOD's before i got to these settings. i do use a reg defrage once a month, more if i un-install or even install a program. i use Windows 7 Manager  by yamicsoft.  http://www.yamicsoft.com/windows7manager/index.html

lol...its not your guide, its awesome. i just have problems with tech stuff. but as you can tell i'm working past that

evertime i install somthing i use the system config program. because as everyone knows, almost all programs think they have to start up when windows start, and it slows down the start up. so theres only 5 things that start at boot up, and those are the things thats needed.

after doing all this it still isnt as fast as it used to be. maybe thats the trade off for doing this.

Haha, opps!  I didn't realize what with Vdropp and without actually did until I read this guide closely.  I have a 3.8 Ghz overclock on a i7 920 D0 stepping, and I was running a 1.26 Vcore Without VDroop, which was causing my Vcore to spike up to 1.35 under p95 load.  Slowly backed down, keeping my Vdroop off, and now I have it set at 1.21 in Bios which shows up as 1.23 in E-LEET and now under p95 it only jumps up to 1.28 Vcore.  Temp differences?  13 C under p95 load!  Thanks for the guide!!!

A simple question, i know OV3RCLK4 said that deacreasing linx gflops means vcore too low and gflops errors after 10 test also means the same, but what happens if linx is not showing me any tests at all? what does that means? i just ran linx for 5 hours and it didnt hang or gimme any errors but also didnt show a single test

Sounds like a glitch or something to me. Did you ever check the task manager to see if your cpu was being used 100%? Or how about temps?

Delete Linx completely and re-download it and run it again.

OV3RCLK4

OH! Man you definitely deserve a Blue Ribbon  I am not sure how it works, but moderators if you are reading this you should  really give this guy a blue ribbon. Most of my knowledge about OC comes from his posts. Thanks "Chronic"
