blaise Chronic, I applaud you for the time and effort you put into the guide. I'm not new to overclocking but still managed to pick up a number of things from it. You hints may get me stable at 4.2GHz yet! I'm sure there are many people still wrestling with their i7's but too embarrassed/proud to ask. +1 Chronic420 rjohnson11 came through last night and removed all sylons posts. Sylon came on today and copy pasted his message over every post rjohnson11 deleted. Making all that editing that rjohnson11 did for me a complete waste of time. Unreal!!!

Thanks for the guide chronic! There is a lot of good information in there. I have been a long time AMD fan, so I am new to using Intel processors. I just built two new i7 machines(one for the wife and one for me), and I was able to overclock them both to the 3.6 Ghz. Also congratulations on the BR.

Chronic, When you refer to "stock memory voltages and stock memory timings" are you talking about what the motherboard assigns/defaults to or what the manufacturer recommends? For example, my memory XMS3 is the C7 so the timings are 7-7-7-20 @ 1.65v. So, is this what I should be shooting for? Or go with the 8-8-8-24 @1.70v? This is what the mobo has before I change it to Corsairs recommended settings. I think this were I'm getting confused. Like it was posted above, I have been a long time AMD guy and havent overclocked much, or really had to mess with the ram settings to much. Thanks

So far i managed to run 3 passes of LinX (stock cooler atm, dont want to fry the chip, waiting for full x58 block to install) 21x184 @ 1.2v. I had to up QPI pll to 1.2v to do this. Otherwise i could pass 182 bclk but i got an error at 184. Now i m trying 21x186 at 1.2v. No matter what i get an error after exactly 3m5s, as soon as the 1st pass finish thats. I tried to up vcore to 1.2125 same error. Up vtt +100mv, same error. Changed cpu skew to 100 same error. The only thing i didnt try is to go more than 1.2v on QPI pll. Any ideas on this?

Yes, LC on cpu and MB. Not to hot tbh. Max temps are like 84-82-82-79, very good for stock crappy cooler. Vreg never above 60C under LinX. So i dont believe its temps that hold me back.

No. Memory or cpu will just make it error out. Try setting to 2:10 and see how it does. I've found some memories hat running slower than they are spec at but love running faster. Like my cheap Super Talent. If I try to run at 1600 or below it's flackey but I can get it to 2133 and runs real nice.

If it was the memory then i would also have a problem with 184 bclk not just with 186 right? And other than that with 2:10 mem will be at 1860. So try 1860 8-8-8-18 for example?

Here is some good info on vdimm voltages. Here is a quote from the article... Personally, with the right board, cooling, and BIOS settings, 1.7V~1.8V should be fine BIOS settings as in... Also make sure the difference between the CPU VTT and Vdimm is NOT greater than 0.5 volts. Use 0.45 volts just to be on the safer side. So if your VTT is +0mv (this comes out as 1.2v) DO NOT set your vdimm to anything higher than 1.65v http://www.anandtech.com/.mory/showdoc.aspx?i=3426

I dont see how you can get the same linx error over and over while changing so many things. If your temps at 1.2125 are below 75c you could try increasing it even more see if you can get past 3 min. 184 bclck on stock cooler with HT on, you're pushing it. I think it needs more vcore. 1.23125 Nop temps are not below 75c. Actually hotest core is around 87C. But i just cant understand why it can pass 184 bclk and it stuck at 186 no matter what changes i make. The difference between 184 and 186 in no more than 2C. I even tried wih 1.225v and still fails at 3m5s. I ll try with a little more vcore and if it fails again then i ll just wait for my block to test this again.

OK, v core seemed to be the problem. With 1.23125 in bios (1.223 idle, 1.235v load in win) i passed the 3m 5s mark that it failed before. That seems to be a large increase for just 2 blck more thought. Maybe cooling issue as u mentioned before.

There comes a point where you will need significantly more vcore than you think. For some people this doesn't happen until above 4.2ghz or even higher. For me it happens right around 4ghz.

OK, so I started to get a driver_irql_less_than_equal bsod yesterday upon boot up. I haven't changed any settings since my initial OC of 3603 MHz. It just happens upon boot. Any Ideas? I'm not OC'ing my RAM its under-clocked. Is something off with the voltages? Once in Win7 everything is great, stable and can play games and so on. Should I run linX and see if I'm dropping Gigaflops? Or is it a tweak that needs to happen? Because I really haven't started tweaking much.
