I recently purchased a EVGA GTX970 FTW. It generally runs everything but maybe not quite maxed out (depends on the game). Now, Dragon Age Inquistion is out and the 970 is having troubles on Ultra settings. I did upgrade the video driver with no change. I also understand that this game is new and not optimized completely yet as its ok on Ultra in some areas and not others. Generally though, would it be a waste to get a 2nd 970 for only one monitor (27")? Would there be general perfromance benefits from SLI regardless (if a game supports it or not)?

    The 27" LCD is 1080p (1920x1200).

Only SLI if you plan on getting a 1440p+ resolution monitor in the future.

Ok, so it would be a waste. But, if I get a monitor (or a 2nd one like my current one) with specs like the one below then yes. Thanks for the replies guys.

I have the basic gtx 970 in SLI i can play games pretty smoothly on the Samsung UD590 UHD monitor! I would say even if you got a second monitor that's 1080p I wouldn't upgrade, you can't really game on both at once and using one for a game and the other for a web browser isn't really that big of a difference for the GPU.

Ok thanks, I haven't SLI'd in a long time so I wasn't sure about any performance boosts with my current rig. I remember running 2 x 512meg EVGA 7800's in SLI and before that (in the 90's) 1 x Diamond Viper 330 (for 2d) and 2 x 12meg Voodoo cards (various manufactuers/for 3D), lol. That UD590 is on NewEgg now for $539.99... now, where to find $539.99? hhmmm.

I am; they released drivers for some of new game releases. There was no change in the benchmark. I probably just need to give the devs time to tweak things. Also, for Nvidia to add in a optimization profile in the game experience. I am not alone with the frame drops in Dragon Age. There were more than a few complaints on the Bioware/EA forums for Nvidia cards.

I'll have my 2nd GTX 970 FTW on Monday for SLI Dragon Age Inquisition, although I play at 2560x1600 res. When I play at 1080p I sit between 50-60 FPS most of the time on Ultra -- which I'm okay with for a pause-and-play RPG like Dragon Age. (And BioWare caps cutscenes to 30 FPS anyway). I need SLI though because at 1600p I get 30 FPS or less on ultra. :(

Also I plan to try overclocking to 1500Mhz on both cards, have you overclocked the 970 yet?

Not yet, I was thinking about OC'ing the card and forgot I could. I want to tweak CPU/ram a bit more too. The benchmark built into DAI said I got and average of 49.5 fps and a low of 40 fps on Ultra and it seemed OK (a little sluggish at times) until I got to the Hinterlands. That place is busy graphically, almost too much. At first it looked like the fps would be ok then it took a nose dive. Others complained about it too on the EA/Bioware forums so it may be game related more than a hardware short coming.

This is odd we have the same mb, same cpu ( my cpu running stock at the moment from benchmarking) , same sdd, my ram is 1866 but 16 gb as well. Where we differ is the monitor I was running the 24 inch 144hz asus monitor x 3 and running on ultra just fine. The same day I wanted to see if there was going to be a huge difference if I sli'd and I wasn't able to run 3 monitors sli'ed the game kept crashing but on 1 screen at 1080 or 1440 it was amazing. Therefore I would say get the second one it is amazing.

I have been kind of kicking around the same idea.  I play at 2560x1080 ultrawide and am a little underwhelmed with my fps while trying to max out Far Cry 4.  I have been wondering if it would be worth the extra horsepower at the resolution I play.

I got a news flash for ya, Dragon Age is a ****ty PC console port.  All the cut scenes are hard capped at 30 FPS, doesn't matter how many cards you have for that game lol.

If you get a 2nd card you can always turn on DSR and have the resolution down sampled from 4K to 1080p and you will get an idea of what kind of FPS to expect once you buy a 4K monitor.

Im running a 29" 2560x1080 UW monitor with SLI 970s (reference, non OC). These things absolutely CRUSH FC4 on my PC. Set VSync (I opt for adaptive) and its a rock solid 60FPS all day long. Ungoverned, Itll chew out massive FPS. Needless to say 'Ive got everything maxed out in the game.

That is what I was wanting to hear.  I love playing on the 29" UW and I knew I may have to go to more GPU than I was used to when I bought it.  I was just hoping that move would be a little more in the future.  I guess I will start looking around for a SSC 970 to match the one I have.

Well, the 970 SSC (to match my existing) came back into stock at newegg a few minutes ago.  I guess it was meant to be.  SLI here I come.

    Hi,

I didn't know this thread carried on, lol. I have been tweaking Dragon Age along with first attempts to OC'ing the video card (will start a new topic asking for help). With the game on Ultra with the GTX970 FTW I get a benchmark of min-40fps max-50fps (dips into 30fps at times). Its playable but I get what might be a micro-stutter and/or possibly my mouse polling (Logitech G9) fighting the games settings. Lowering the graphic settings and its better. I would think 40-50fps would be smoother. The game devs along with Nvidia will fix things I'm sure. About a monitor, I did look at the 27" 144hz model a ways back (last year?) but it disappeared from sale; manufacturing issues? I am using Asus 27" now, 60hz. I was also looking at a IPS panel or a higher resolution Samsung TN panel.

Just following up, I have two 970 FTW ACX 2.0. Still fine tuning the OC but I'm close to 1500Mhz stable. CPU is quad core @ 4.5Ghz.

At 2560x1600 I'm playing DA:I ultra settings at 55-60 FPS in heavily forested areas, like The Hinterlands, and a steady 60 FPS in all other areas (I use V-Sync). I'm playing Far Cry 4 ultra settings (except TXAA instead of MSAA) at 70+ FPS.

    I'm happy with the results.

    2 x GTX 1080 FE @ +200MHz/+500MHz. i7 5930k @ 4.5GHz. 32GB DDR4 2400MHz. Samsung 950 Pro. Samsung JS9000 4K SUHD TV. (game mode)
