Is that the full blown Ubuntu? Have you opened Synaptic Package Manager and searched for Boinc Manager?

I'm only running Mint as far as Linux goes, but Synaptic is in the Start Menu/Administration/Synaptic......

I'm not certain but that sounds like a folding appliance only. Best to wait for someone else with input. You might consider a new linux install on a different drive and keep that one set aside for future use.

You are correct on the appliance. He needed the password and that was only used for the appliance not the Musky install like I got. I also will switch to crunching.

You can use the folding appliance.  I am doing that now... I've got it installed on a 16G USB Stick... I just downloaded the BOINC client, created a folder for BOINC under my home folder, copied the .sh file there, made it an executable and did the install using sudo (I run Unbuntu 12.04).  It works like a champ.  So you can use the appliance.

You can also do a fresh install on a HD if you want.

We used to have a sticky on BOINC installation for Linux.  I don't know where it went.

Re: Setting boinc up on ubuntu 12.4 ? 2013/12/18 08:01:55 (permalink)
I have the HardOCP Desktop version of Ubuntu running (12.04 LTS) and ran into a problem getting Boinc installed.  Here's what I was experiencing and what I had to do to get Boinc to even install from either the "Ubuntu Software Center" or the "Package Manager".

I was trying to install BOINC on the 4P system where I have the custom HardOCP Ubuntu 12.04 LTS version installed (for Folding).  I continuously got “internet connection errors”, “location not found” and “404” errors when trying to download/install either BOINC or even to do Ubuntu Updates.  I began to wonder if the Ubuntu Servers that were being contacted were up or no longer valid since this is a older version of Ubuntu (12.04).  I also was wondering if the people at HardOCP made some sort of changes that prevented updating the OS so that it would not interfere with their customized version of Ubuntu.

So, I began looking around within the Network settings and the Update Manager settings.  The Network settings all appeared to be OK, so nothing stood out there.  But, within the Update Manager settings, I found the area where you can assign what Ubuntu Server is used for updating.  It was set to “US-Server” and I changed that setting to “Main”.  I selected the “Close” button on that screen (do not click the “Revert” button), and re-tried the Ubuntu Update installation routine.  This time it went through successfully.  Then I went into the Ubuntu Software Center, selected the Boinc client/manager and was able to download/install the app.

All I could figure is either that US Server was offline or no longer functional and the “Main” selection allowed me to connect to Ubuntu Servers that were available.  After changing that Server location (above) and allowing all the Ubuntu OS updates to be installed, I re-tried installing BOINC.  It went through and installed without any problems.

Here's a graphic of the steps to get to the settings that I mentioned above:

After the Christmas Race I'll be loading up a 32 G USB stick with stock Ubuntu and reinstalling the BOINC client.  I'll then go ahead and put the [H] folding appliance stick aside for the times the folding group need help.

NerdGZ, I actually don't fear the console...I think it fears me!

The situation that I had was more of a "404 page not found" issue that the Ubuntu Update process was using as a Server contact.  Once I made the change in Server selection (as in my post above), the problem was solved.  Thanks for the link...I'm always interested in learning something new.

for reference tex the sources.list is located at /etc/apt/sources.list you can edit it with sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list and edit the mirror location to change to aim to another mirror you can see the closest one to you normally you can use this for refrence http://mirrors.us.kernel.org/ubuntu i use http or ftp protocol (search on inet how to do it :) ) grephical is a frontend to this operation but i prefer doing things by myself.

How do we update or upgrade 7.0.27 to 7.2.33 boinc_7.2.33_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh
I have looked and looked but cannot find the command line or how to install a .sh file on Ubuntu 12.04
I have a full desktop install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Ubuntu software downloader installer installed 7.0.27
Thanks Team, I am moving my 2P 32 Core over to WGC.

    Found it at http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?287711-Updating-to-latest-Boinc-on-Berkely-site-Linux

    This is what I ran:

Exit boinc-manager in Adv View and click Stop

    Run the below commands

    sudo service boinc-client stop

    cd
    wget http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.2.33_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh

    sudo chmod a+x  boinc_7.2.33_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh

    sudo sh  boinc_7.2.33_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh

    cd BOINC

    sudo cp boinc* /usr/bin/

    sudo service boinc-client start

See http://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2125796 for BOINC version 7.2.42

It's easier to just do a search from the software center for BOINC... it'll direct you to the client and then click on install.  Takes a bit but gets the job done.

Yes this is how I installed Version 7.0.27, 7.2.33 is not listed through the Software Center.

Re: Setting boinc up on ubuntu 12.4 ? 2014/01/17 10:51:14 (permalink)
Bc, that is something I have not found a way to do either.  I'm running the BOINC version (7.0.27 - June 2012 vintage) that the Package Mgr offers, and it is way down the list from the current version of BOINC for Linux (7.2.33).  I've tried installing the latest Linux version from the BOINC website.  I followed the various methods they provide to try and install it, but none of them have met with success (except for the Package Mgr installation).

In searching the net for installation help, there is also a suggestion that says you can do an in-place upgrade from the Package Mgr.  That does not work on my install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS either.  It says that you can bring up the program in Pkg Mgr and that there will be a drop down selection to upgrade to the latest version.  In my copy pf Pkg Mgr, there is no such drop-down selection available to do an upgrade.  I've tried every way I could find to get an upgraded version of BOINC with no success and finally gave up on it.

I still credit you Bc for finding it, sharing it and for also boiling it down to a much simpler view as you did above.  Besides, I can't recommend Xtremesystems for recognition here, but you I can.  If you only knew how much time I wasted on this just the other day.  This was perfect and solved my desire to upgrade for two of my Linux Crunching rigs.  I tried to locate a button or something to click that shows you post as helpful, but those things seem to be gone now.

BOINC version 7.2.33 seems to not complete it will upload but it is not reporting.
I have run an Update on the Project for it to Report.
I did not have to do this with 7.0.27 so you may want to keep an I on this.

Bc, on the (2) Linux rigs that I upgraded today to 7.2.33, they are processing, uploading and clearing the "Ready to report" just fine.  I had that very problem with the old version when I had played with my WU Cache setting and was caching a day or so of WUs.  Right after I set the cache back to 0-days (no WU cache), the problem went away and has not returned.

OK, they are set to one day I will set them to 0 on all my rigs and see if it helps.
I did do this on my Windows rig but it did not help.
