I have an SR-2 mobo with 2-way GTX 980s 4MB running great (mostly used for Octane GPU Rendering).
but as always i need more power!   Is it possible to run
4 GTX 980 ti 6GB cards in SLI?  Any compatibility issues I should worry about?

I also have 2 Intel Xeon x5690s and 48GB ram.

Are you asking if it would have trouble running 980Ti's or running 4 of them?

Support said they should run fine but since 4 cards
are close together they might run hot.  Will need to
    run water or more fans.

Just get the reference coolers.  They may be more audible, but they are meant for stacking.. ACX is not meant for 4 way, and reference/watercooling/hybrids would be the only option that wouldn't cook your cards.

As a matter of Fact, get the hybrids if you can support four separate 120mm radiators.  If not, stick to reference cards or go watercooling.
