I will be posting the Original firmware flash for those requesting it shortly.

However I did some internal testing and could not reproduce negative results.  I tested with two 80GB Hard drives in Raid and the performance with the new firmware was improved.

Does EVGA support installing Windows 7 on a single hard drive or Raid array attached to the Marvel Sata III/6G controller? or are the Sata III ports just for Data disk raid or stand alone only?

Can you tell us where to find the drivers for Win7 and which one specifically to point to and use for a 64 bit OS?
I believe they are found in the 1.0.0.1042-WHQL driver package in the SCSI miniport driver\miniport folder. However I would imagine pointing to them will produce a list of drivers.
Is there one driver for Win7  or a different marvel driver for a stand alone drive or Raid pair?
I suspect there are different drivers for XP and Vista Win7.
Once the Marvel Driver is in place preinstallation of Win7, are both the drvConsoleSetup and drvSetup application required once Win 7 is installed?

Yes, inside the miniport folder is floppy64 folder, open that folder then coppy all the contents to a usb thumb drive and load them during win7 setup.  Once the OS is loaded there is no need to load them again.

Yes but does the mean the two software applications included in the 1.0.0.1042 package are not need for the windows environment?

Yes.  The only one you need is the X64 floppy for installing Windows, thats all I ever used when I set up my X58 SLI3.

I guess I'm saying it wrong but you have not answered the question in my mind.
I understand you point to the floppy64 folder the drive is recognized Win7 installation continues until complete.
Windows is now installed the question is at that point should we install the software app to the Win7 OS?
If yes? there are two applications included in the 1.0.0.1042 package the question is which one or both gets installed?
I hope this make sense to you now.

The other question that is unanswered is when you get to that point of the installation where you point to the floppy64 file does the routine present you with a list of drivers or does it just go ahead and automatically install the driver. The reason I ask this is typically using a floppy & F6 when the floppy is read you are presented with a list of drivers to choose from. So the question at that point is which driver should be used? I know with Win7 F6 is not required because you can just click on Load Drivers and browse to the folder but still once you point to that folder are you presented with a list? If yes then which driver should be used?

I can't help thinking if someone had actually done this they would know the answer straight away and the need for all the verbiage here would be moot.

All I've had are headache's. Not exactly dumb when it come to flashing a BIOS or Firmware. The whole driver thing though, if that could be written out in a guide, that would be great. There are way to many files in that zip, with no idea when to install them and which ones. This is for a fresh install. I have no idea when to hit F6 because I have never had to do anything like that in the past.

If you only copy the floppy 64 files to your media then you will only see the option to install 64bit drivers for the Marvell 9128 controller.  I see the other two .exe files your talking about included in the driver package.  TBH I never have used or installed either of those.  I think the drvsetup.exe is for installing drivers after windows is loaded, which wont be necessary as you will have already loaded them during the install process.  the drvconsolesetup.exe I have no clue what that is.....LOL

If you are having issues you should be able to point to the files in the Floppy folder,  (just put them on a thumb drive) and during install point to those and you will see your drives.

as for the driver setup it is quite simple by just running the console installer package once in the windows enviroment.

This would definitely be correct.

During install point to the files in the floppy folder for the correct OS  64 or 32 (bit)  and you will see the drives.

Driver package can be installed in windows via the console installer

i have notice this horrible problem of performance degradation, but i have found a work around for me. originally when i got my E770, i installed the marvell drivers, and notice after a few hours, the performance was piss-poor, so i uninstalled the marvel drivers, reinstalled and uninstall them again and use the windows 7 drivers, and my performance returned. this is annoying, but atleast i can workthrough this blasphemy. running WEI Disk Performance test with my SATA-III driver yields me 7.9, and when it starts to degrade, it would do 7.4; again doing the reinstall/uninstall trick works me. oh, and it seems to degrade after tweaking with my bios too much trying to overclock or after 3 weeks.

Testing results comparing Intel ICH10R raid with Marvell raid...   (tested with Two Sata II/3G Hard disks in Raid 0)

Something to note:
  • Marvell Raid controller switches to SATAII mode with sataII drives attached.  therefore this is a quite accurate test or at least as accurate as a synthetic benchmark will produce.  As you can see the marvell is on par with the intel when run back to back for comparison

First Up we have the intel Raid:

then we have the marvell raid with new firmware:

TY ShannonR it's good to know the Marvel (Red) ports are backward compatible with SataII. The results look like a statistical dead heat.

Standard 80GB Mechanical hard drives.

then again,  the strong point for the controller is its SATA III/6G capability.

Running it in SATAII  would likely be better off to run on the native intel chipset ports

Re:SATA III/6G Firmware and Software Updates Released 2010/10/29 11:10:22 (permalink)
well i don't even see the point of testing any sata ll drives, i mean they are advertised as sata lll 6 gb/s ports, there are plenty of ports for sata ll drives anyway,
i have seen plenty of bench's where you can get single sata lll drive performance up to snuff, but no where have i seen both ports in raid produce anything but abysmal results so far

I have a Sata III Crucial SSD. I will do a before and after once I install the updates. Quick question, do I need to install the software once I have installed the firmware? Or is it redundant?

seems if you have a sata lll drive even with the higher acc times it still is able to power thru to good numbers, be nice to see raid 0 numbers from those two ports

I did the firmware flash but its showing 1027 as the last numbers?  Also when i was going to flash it i got a physical media error then the flash tool loaded hit Y to start it after section 5 flashed i get a BIOS header different warning? 2x restarts and reinstall drivers everything is running smooth but what was all those errors about?

Re:SATA III/6G Firmware and Software Updates Released 2010/11/08 23:12:10 (permalink)
Hi all,

We have looked into this, and the issue is a hardware limitation offered by the controller. In fact, all boards that use the current Marvell SATA 6G controller will run at similar speeds in RAID 0 with high performance SSD’s. One alternative to have faster results is to use a PCI-E add in card.

This limitation will be very much like onboard graphics and discreet graphics. Also, the next generation of Marvell controllers are coming out next year and hopefully the bottleneck can be overcome. At the moment, the current Marvell SATA 6G controller is the best solution to squeeze into a small footprint.

Thanks,
Jacob

Any idea why i got 2 separate errors when updating?
Got a physical media error then flash utility loaded then i got a BIOS header different error but it all flashed windows forced me to reboot 2x times though
also on my Marvell controller screen its labelled as 1.0.0.1027?

So is it worth using a single drive with this controller?
