The Firmware and Software below is applicable to the following mainboards:
  • EVGA CLASSIFIED SR-2
  • EVGA x58 CLASSIFIED 3
  • EVGA X58 FTW 3
  • EVGA X58 SLI 3
PLEASE NOTE:
  • It is strongly recommended that you backup any data on the SATAIII/6G drives if in a raid configuration before flashing the Marvell chipset.  In rare occurrences the raid will degrade and could lose data.
  • If this is a new installation, flashing of firmware is recommended before installation of data to the drive to minimize any issues that may occur after the flash if in a raid configuration.
  • After firmware is flashed to the marvell controller the drivers should be reinstalled to avoid any possible issues that can arise as it recognizes the controller differently after the flash.

Firmware Version 1.0.0.1701
  • Enhances AHCI compatibility
Firmware Updating can be accomplished VIA the methods below:

CD/DVD Installation - Recommended installation method
  • Download .iso file below for your motherboard:
CD ISO

USB FLOPPY Installation - Recommended installation method

  • Download the .exe file below for your motherboard:
USB Bootable Floppy

If you right click the .iso file the first option should be, "Burn Disc Image." I could not tell from your post if you were trying a CD or not. But MagicISO convert .iso files to .bin files if you wanted to try a flash drive. I cannot comment on how that works as I've never done it.

I just flashed this firmware. Gave me "Physical media error" message before flash began. During flash, between Sections 4 and 5 I received the following message:
"Warning! BIOS Header and Device ID don't match. Incoming BIOS Header is 0x9125. Current BIOS Header is 0x91a3"
Flash finished "successfully," and I reinstalled Marvell drivers in Windows.

After reboot and Marvell BIOS post, I see the firmware shown is 1.0.0.1029 now? The original firmware version number. I have this board setup on a box atm and will test my new Crucial drive in the next hour.
Please share you experiences everyone... AHCI selectable for you now? RAID performance any better? Single drive performance any better?

Note, here is the same Marvell controller issue experienced by ASUS over 3 months ago:

@ zdog Since we both flashed to the same board, the 770, can you tell me if you had the BIOS Header warning inbetween Sections 4 and 5 of the flash? I am combing through my registry now to confirm my header ID.

Jacob, I have a X58 Classified 4-way SLI that I purchased about a month ago, and looking at the list above, wasn't sure if this update applied to my board or not. I am still working on putting the watercooling setup for the 4 295 Hydros together, so I have a little time, but if it does apply to my board, let me know so I can get it downloaded and be ready when I'm set to fire it up. Thanks!

The 4 way board does not have a Marvell SATAIII/6G controller. It has a Marvell network adapter. This firmware update does not apply to your board.

Flashed to this new .1701 Marvell-Bios this morning. The new bios is reported as .29 while the previous was .27.

The controller is now reporting AHCI (CPU AHCI) in the Marvell ctrl-m, but in BIOS my SATA 3/6 disk is reported as a SCSI-device, my other drives are reported as AHCI.

    However, more importantly;

    Speed/Performance has not improved

I get the same performance on the Marvell ports as i do on the Intel's. Writes avg 200 Mb/s, Reads avg 260 Mb/s using ATTO. Exactly the same as the previous Marvell-Bios and exactly the same as using the Intel SATA 2-ports.

This is on a single Corsair P3-128 drive using a SATA3/6Gbs-cable.

Jacob/Shannon/anyone (I'm not fussy):  I updated the Firmware on my Classified 3, now the BIOS is 1.0.0.1029 and the Firmware is 2.2.0.1118.

As this is supposed to be firmware update 1.0.0.1701, are the BIOS/Firmware versions mentioned above correct?

I did not get any warning between sections 4 and 5 during the flash as reported by others, does that matter as you stated it was normal to get it?

    Re:SATA III/6G Firmware Update version 1701 2011/03/03 06:25:01 (permalink)

Jacob/Shannon/anyone (I'm not fussy):  I updated the Firmware on my Classified 3, now the BIOS is 1.0.0.1029 and the Firmware is 2.2.0.1118.

As this is supposed to be firmware update 1.0.0.1701, are the BIOS/Firmware versions mentioned above correct?

I did not get any warning between sections 4 and 5 during the flash as reported by others, does that matter as you stated it was normal to get it?

That makes ne uneasy..why do some get the error, and others don't?? Either way, I'm tired of hammering on my Crucial, it's brand new and not fair to my wallet or the hardware.. Speeds on my ATTO bench were the same as previous firmwares. This firmware is...PR.
I will be out of town for the next week, I hope to come back to some real resolutions to these problems.

^^ lol. That sucks for you guys. No help it seems. Email Jacob about it to get his attention. Seems like no forum tech support sees anything lately.

Meh, I for one won't complain about it, not exactly like this is a tech support forum as much as an end-user one.

If they have the time to help out then that's great, if not, I can get answers elsewhere.

Um, there is no magical answer anywhere else. An answer is needed from EVGA or Marvell. You don't complain about it because you don't have a SATA III SSD, I bet you would if you had one..not all of us have PCIe drives :)

No magical answer needed, I can always contact tech support if I really wanted to know....there are always ways to get info. Besides, no need for me to sweat it anyway, my system still works like a charm after the firmware change.  My SSD RAID0 is hooked up to the marvell controller and I get ~480-500 on the reads, I'm happy enough.

There is no magical answers because there is no magical solution to this problem. Support can't change that fact.

The Marvell (supposed-to-be) SATA 3/6gbs controller spec'ed on this cards is nothing but POS giving no sata3 benefits over the sata2 Intel-controller on the board.
I can understand people with SATA2-setups does not complain, you have not invested in new, higher performance drives. The Marvell Sata3 does not perform any better than the Intel Sata2 with Sata3 drives. Obviously they have found limitations in the Marvell controllers bandwith that limits performance amd all we get is "sorry".

Is your  2 x 60GB Vertex2 RAID 0 on the Marvel controller and your boot volume for windows?

My system is actually set-up, as geeky as this sounds sitting here thinking about it, a TRI-Win7 boot configuration.

    Here is my drive setup:

    240 GB RevoX2 / OS
    2x  60GB Vertex 2's in RAID0 / OS
     Seagate 2TB / OS
WD 1TB Caviar Black (two 500GB partitions)
    3TB USB3 drive

Win 7 installation #1 - On the RevoX2 and setup for my own personal and gaming use.  It uses one of the Caviar’s 500GB partitions for desktop profile/large apps and storage as needed keeping unnecessary files and writes off of the RevoX2

Win 7 installation #2- 2x Vertex2’s in RAID0 on the Marvel controller, I cannot use the Intel RAID with the Revox2, but I am not complaining about it either. This install is for the wife & kids to use if their primary computer is tied up. It uses the other 500GB Caviar partition for the desktop/profiles and storage as needed.  This prevents the kids from screwing up, uh…err…I mean accidently causing problems with anything on my RevoX2 Win7 install.

Win 7 installation #3 – On the 2TB Seagate.  I use this as a utility drive for video copying, editing (nothing illegal going on here), MS Office work, as well as other write intensive/space consuming apps that I wouldn't’t want use on any of the SSDs.

And I back it all up on the 3TB USB3 Drive using Norton Ghost 15…
