IMO, if you are not even using them you should just disable them in BIOS and not even worry about it.

If you do end up needing them one day, worry about it then

Meh, I for one won't complain about it, not exactly like this is a tech support forum as much as an end-user one.

If they have the time to help out then that's great, if not, I can get answers elsewhere.

Um, there is no magical answer anywhere else. An answer is needed from EVGA or Marvell. You don't complain about it because you don't have a SATA III SSD, I bet you would if you had one..not all of us have PCIe drives :)

No magical answer needed, I can always contact tech support if I really wanted to know....there are always ways to get info. Besides, no need for me to sweat it anyway, my system still works like a charm after the firmware change.  My SSD RAID0 is hooked up to the marvell controller and I get ~480-500 on the reads, I'm happy enough.

Yeah but the reason you are not sweating is because you use your SATA III controller with SATA II drives so will not be experiencing the issues that all of us with SATA III drives on the SATA III controller are experiencing !!!

Intel Core i7 980x Cooled with Corsair H70

This issue unfortunatly is a Marvell issue and not an EVGA issue.  EVGA just has the misfortune of having to support a device that doesnt work the way it is supposed to.  EVGA needs to look elsewhere for Sata III controllers stat.

This thread pertains to the Marvell SATAIII controller, and none of your posts here so far have been positive, or contribute in anyway. Please stop trolling here, unless you have real information/advice to share with users who DO USE their SATA III controller. I do not understand how you can defend a defective product you don't even take advantage of?

That being said, I've had more time to spend on my rig. Seems my Marvell controller is locked into CPU AHCI now, but I am still getting the same dismal read/write speeds on a single drive setup. I am looking to move to a dual drive, RAID 0 setup soon, and this board simply will not do..

Exactly, the performance on the intel sata2 and the marvell sata3 is the same for sata3 drives, so absolutely no perfomance improvements and not possible to reach the speeds the sata3 drive is capable of. This is for single drives as well, for raid 0 setups the speeds will be even more off, the controller simply cant handle it.

Trolling? really, if you took the time to read everything I posted you would realize that I do use the Marvel controller in a RAID array.
The rest of my posts were in REPLIES to others and were also regarding the SATA 3 controller.   How are my posts negative?, just because I don't attack the Marvel controller (amazing how not attacking something is considered negative BTW), doesn't mean you should attack me by accusing me of trolling.

Also, you missed this post,

That was on topic and nothing negative in it at all, I think you have really misunderstood my intent as well as the intent of this thread, which you did not even start.

Just so we you are clear, this is how trolling is explained in the TOS:

Trolling - Trolling can be defined as when a member posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages with the primary intent or consequence of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. Trolling can also be accomplished by harassing another member by following them through various threads, creating threads directed at another member or group of members, or intentionally creating the same thread in various forums despite being warned or told to post in the correct forum.  Members who feel they are being "trolled" should contact a moderator immediately, as this is the only effective way to prevent this behavior.

Total troll but ok.

The marvel firmware update is a boot image. Download the latest firmware, burn the image to a cd using Windows, Nero, Alcohol, etc.

Reload your BIOS before firmware update and set your drives to AHCI. Either hit Escape at post or put cdrom as first in your boot order. It will load the marvel flash tool and all you should need to do is hit Y to begin.

As far as preloading the Marvell drivers during OS install, download the latest SATA6 drivers, put them on a USB flash drive. Have this USB drive plugged in when you load up Windows install. Do Custom Install, select your partition on marvel controller, click Drivers, then select the marvel driver on your USB flash drive. Done.

You're the one who seems to get off on arguing. Post something helpful or meangingful to the topic, or not at all please..
If you have a problem with me, report me. Don't go quoting TOS in a thread about SATAIII firmware, which you do not even utilize..seriously?

And I'm sorry, but what are you disagreeing with me about? The Marvell SATAIII controller is garbage... If you refute that, that would also make you a fanboi..

What is it that makes you think the FW has rolled back? The BIOS post for the Marvell controller will state a .1029 version which actually denotes .1701.  If you hit Control + M and enter the Marvell BIOS, you will see more version numbers. If you could post those here, we could clear up any confusion if your FW update rolled back. However, I think it is highly unlikely.

My biggest compalint is that with two brand new Intel 510 6G SSD drives the Marvell controller is actually slower in raid 0 than with just a single drive. How can you claim a raid controller thats actually slower in a raid 0 config? Maybe marvell wiil get their act together till then looks like i will have to run my SSD's in raid 0 off an  Highpoint 640 sata III add-in card.

First post ever...

Here is my Q... I just recently purchased the X58 FTW3. Never updated BIOS or the Marvell Controllers because when I tried the first time, it couldn't find my disk. So I just stuck with what is shipped with. Everything is working absolutely fine.

After reading your posts about SATA II and SATA III, I am now wondering if my system will boot faster if I place those drives on the SATA II, as it will bypass the Marvell Controllers, correct?

Can somebody ellaborate on this for me? Would I also still have ACHI enabled?

Off topic... My RAM underclocks itself to 1066 (I have 1600 RAM), using the i7-970. I understand that the CPU wants only 1066, but is there a way to bump this up without the mobo wanting to underclock my CPU?

Also, instead of the i7-970 showing as 3.20GHz, it is showing as 3.18GHz. I have everything set to Auto, as I just wanted to boot and play with my new rig. I think now that I completely finished, it is time to start tinkering with the settings and get it to where it needs to be. The whole system is fast, but I want the optimal speed of it overall. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

P.S. Just saw that this is not my first post ever, must have been a long time since my last two, because I sure do not remember them! lol.

Damn can't believe I didn't see this sooner.  I'm on call so hopefully nothing breaks at work tomorrow and I can try this out.  I'll report back with the results.   Thank you Shannon for continuing to look into this.  I tried my best to be patient and follow the proper support channels :)

This upgrade broke Linux support for me and others, at least in terms of being able to run a stock Gentoo install CD and have our SATA3 drivers recognized. For all those using SATA3 disks with Linux... beware.

We are still trying to figure out the new required settings.

Can anyone tell me if the X58 SLI LE will ever have SATA III support?  Could it even support it with an update in theory?

Thanks

No, its a different physical chipset on the board.

The SATA 3 Marvell chip is only SATA 3 on paper and in theory anyway.

You will never, ever see SATA 3 performance/benefits on it IRL.

I just tried to flash the firmware and didn't even get that far. The batch file spat out a string of "file not found" lines and decided not to flash. What exactly is the procedure for flashing the firmware from  CD? I assumed you just reboot, press escape and select your CD. Anything else I'm supposed to do? Are you supposed to enter the Marvell console first?

It's okay -- Win 7 drivers are working, now seeing 400+ MBPS transfers and will not push my luck.

@sedril, BINGO. That would be me as well, duh. Would mark your post as HELPFUL if I could.

For the record, btw, the SATA III port on my mobo was not a dream to get working, but when I finally sussed it out (thanks to help from members on this forum!), it immediately increased my data transfers as measured by ATTO from max 280mbps (on SATA II) to consistently over 400, before any tweaking -- not quite the 550mbps that my Vertex 3 is supposed to be capable of, but a heckuva lot better than SATA II.

So yes, it's a compromise, but I'm very glad I bought this mobo, and I find this forum to be fantastic.

Is this also a problem for anyone using all 3 x16 PCI-E slots? As in running TRI-SLI taking away bandwidth for connected SATA3 drives?..and Marvell's SATA3 controller uses PCI-E bandwidth doesn't it? .. or is it just a uber crappy Marvell SATA3 controller like I've been reading here?
