OMG thank you so much!

Ever since I have gotten my X58 (which I love) I could never get my system to go to sleep.  The screen would turn off but everything else was still on (lights and fans).  On my 780i all I had to do was go into device manager and disable the LAN wake up.  But that did not help me with the X58.

I didn't know that I needed to go into the BIOS to switch the sleep mode (didn't know what ACPI was).  So I just switched it from S1 to S3 and now everything finally turns off.

So again, thank you so much!  This was making me very frustrated because I used to use sleep so much.

I like using S3 too, it saves a lot of power and noise.  Only trouble I have with it is when I want to watch TV from an Extender like the Xbox 360 and it's asleep it won't wake up when the Xbox tries to connect.  So we have to run down stairs and wake it up.

Any ideas of how to set it up to auto wake up for extenders?

If you want to wake up with extender than you have to enable wake on LAN in BIOS and enable wake on LAN in network card properties window. There were many improvements made in driver level since I wrote this so it should work for you.

Glad i found this thread. When i first built my system i tried S3 sleep but always had issues when coming out of S3. Sometimes it would come out just fine but others i would hard lock and have to reset my pc. I had everything setup like it shows in this guide but always had the same issue. May try to update my bios this weekend and give it another shot.

The last alphanumeric BIOS revision (I think S22D) is the best one for sleep S3. Also what timings and ratio is on your RAM?

First of all, thanks for the tread. Like manbearpig i too have been trying to figure out how to make my comp fans turn off when in sleep.
I have acuple questions (kinda noob, sorry.)
Is the S3 different then the [font="arial; line-height: normal; "]CxE Function? I know there different in the bios but i thought the CxE Function also affected how the computer sleeps.  I noticed you had yours set to Auto, is this the best option for the CxE Function or dose it matter? will this settings work with no OC?

Wake on Lan works wonderfully for my computer, trouble is I don't know of a way to get the extender to send the "Magic Packet" that wakes up the PC.  Not the end of the world, just a matter of convenience, and thought that maybe somebody had heard of a way.

Re:S3 Sleep Guide and why use it 2010/10/05 08:15:36 (permalink)
so its been 10 months since i followed the advice in this thread, and got S3 sleep to work every time!

i was using the settings shown in the first post of this thread, with only a couple changes over the months, but S3 worked every time.

i decided to upgrade the bios to see if it would fix a drive problem i was having, so i went from SZ2Z to 74, and now it reliably goes into sleep, but doesnt come out.

if i reset the computer, it will recover from the hibernate file, but it just wont come back out of S3 sleep.

because it was a bios upgrade (the first in 10 months) i cleared the bios after upgrading, then used the guide (first post) to match up the settings once again, but it just wont recover.

anyone else have this issue with bios 74?  any suggestions?

if not i guess i will just flash back, since that one seemed to work well (and the problem i was trying to fix turned out to be something else anyway)

thanks,

After adding support for 6 core CPU's they did borke S3. Nothing can be done about that but use older BIOS.

CxE and speed step are the power saving features of the CPU and should be used when possible.

Wake on LAN. Have you tried enabling wake on any packet?

Re:S3 Sleep Guide and why use it 2010/10/05 10:03:19 (permalink)
i set it up for wake on any packet, but the problem i have is this;

electricity here in northern california is $0.45 per kilowatt hour, about 6x the US average, for the higher usages.

so i set up my computers to sleep after 30 minutes, but expect them to come out of sleep in a few seconds.

i thought the wake on any packet would help when the server does a system wide backup, and wants to grab files from the computer, figuring with that enabled it would wake it up, do the backup, then after 30 minutes it would go back to sleep.

so it was already enabled when i was having this problem.

i just downgraded back to the prior bios (SZ2Z) and will live with that one, unless someone can tell me which newer one definately works with S3.
i just wish they would tell us which bio's S3 works with, and which ones dont, so i dont waste any more time on this.  On the other hand, if it wasnt for your guide it wouldnt work at all, so thanks again!

O.K., without SP1... my computer based on evga x58 Classified 3 workt very well before I installed the Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit Service Pack 1. Actualy when the PC go to sospend, it can't back to previous state. No fix for tis problem have found except to unistall SP1-

Re:S3 Sleep Guide and why use it 2011/03/02 19:46:30 (permalink)
Lot of people are experiencing same issues as I do.

Now regarding EVGA's X58 Micro board I can confirm these things.

1. X58 Micro + i7 950 + W7 Ultimate = S3 sleep mode working
2. X58 Micro + i7 950 + W7 Ultimate SP1 = S3 Sleep mode working
3. X58 Micro + i7 980x + W7 Ultimate = S3 sleep mode working
4. X58 Micro + i7 980x + W7 Ultimate SP1 = S3 Sleep mode fails while resuming.

Above 4 mentioned steps I have tested twice on each processor with same results. Clean installs with only drivers installed for each device. Other forum members report failure with W7 SP1 sleep mode on other processors but this is what I can confirm with what I have. I have other boards with socket 775 CPUs and Intel one with SB CPU and S3 sleep mode is working fine with W7 SP1.

General consensus so far across technet forums, MS W7 forums and EVGA forums that this can happen on any platform. Issue is (what they think) that OS issues shutdown command for it self while it tells mother board to go to S3 in some scenarios. Failure is instant upon resume. Some report that disabling hybrid sleep solves the problem for them however it does not for me. We have to wait for MS to fix this.

It looks like CPU microcode update was needed for S3 sleep to be resolved for W7 SP1. Nice job EVGA. I wonder what was changed in W7 to make this problem to appear.

Unfortunately i think that the CPU microcode was updated from EVGA in the last bios only for the Intel Core i7 980X, and not for my Intel Core i7 990X. So i can't install W7SP1 in my EVGA X58 Classified 3 with an Intel Core i7 990X, if I want to use the S3 state. Without SP1 the S3 state work fine.

I don't see use of any type of Sleep and Hibernation. Your computer is better off being on all the time.

It is problem with Windows 7. Sleep works fine with Ubuntu Linux but fails on Windows 7 on so many different configurations. I think MS failed there big time.

It has been awesome feature for me since I "discovered" it back in 2003. Most of your laptops and notebooks are setup out of box to work wit S3 and work good. Most of the MOBO's that we buy have to be setup properly to work with S3. Once you set it up and see what it can do you never want to go back. When it works properly you are at your desktop at 2-3 seconds with all the apps already running.

@ idiegoit. Nice find. If you PM Jacob and explain what all you have tried to get it running he might look into it. That is what I did. Couple of post up you will see what I wrote about 980x and testing that I did. Copy of that post is what I sent him in the PM. They included it into this BIOS update. BIOS 80.

@ Iradunovic Linux interacts with BIOS differently than Windows does. Hence the issues. I think MS fixed some things in order to make S3 and other power features work more efficient. This is why BIOS update is required on some hardware configurations.

I recently got an RMA  E758, rev 1.1, and now I'm getting this issue. I have tried all of the suggestions in this thread, but no dice. Cannot wake up system from S3 sleep, no POST.  I have to flip the kill switch on the PSU, leave it off for a few, and turn it back on to get it back up.

BIOS 82,  W7 64 SP1.  What's weird is my advanced power options don't even have a 'hybrid sleep' option.

Any suggetions?

Are you running at stock clocks? With BIOS 82 I had to redo all my BIOS settings to get S3 to work again. I started with everything at auto except for memory timing. If you don't have the option to 'hibernate' you won't have the option for hybrid sleep either.

I'm attempting to get S3 running on an EVGA X58 (758) board but it looks like a no-go. I've copied all the settings listed, but the picture of the memory settings is currently AWOL. Does anyone have a copy of them so I can see if those will get my system working? Sleep was working with a pair of GTX 260's, but once I replaced them with GTX 680's, it's borked. With the 260's back, in, S3 works fine, so there's definitely some combination of GTX card and bios settings that are messing things up.
