It took me a while to figure out the the reason why I couldn't interface with my M.2 drive was because I had my sata mode set to raid. Once I switched to AHCI, I could the use the M.2 drive. Given that I have 2 ssd's in raid 0 and would rather keep them like that, the question I have is how to use the M.2 drive interface while still running sata mode in raid? Any ideas?

I was able to create a configuration similar to your target by using the Intel Management Engine (ctl +I during boot process). My M.2 is the system drive and I setup a RAID 1 using SATA ports 0 and 1.

Switching to this configuration "may" require that you reformat your drives.

I attempted that in the beginning, but the the issue is that once I enable raid, the m.2 drive is not detectable as any bootable drive. Unable to see the drive in Intel Management Engine using ctrl + I either.

Welcome to the forums kevngonaburnsya! I see that you have a Classified K Z170 which I think does not use the CTRL + I hotkey to enter the RAID controller. Since the Z97 we started allowing access to the RAID controller in UEFI (BIOS). I would advise to check the following FAQ http://www.evga.com/support/faq/afmmain.aspx?faqid=59602. I would also make sure you are using the latest BIOS update v1.03 and then attempt to configure your RAID and the M.2 SSD once again.

I updated the bios right after the board's initial installation. I can confirm that the Intel raid controller works and can be accessed using ctrl + I as I already have raid that is already setup. I can confirm that ctrl + I interface and the board's boot section does not recognize the m.2 drive. The Intel raid controller accessed through the bios shows the m.2 drive with serial numbers and all. Again, all this occurs when raid is enabled. When set to ahci, m.2 is shown in the Bootable devices. I will try again with disabling the csm configuration. My gtx 680s are uefi compatible and I was trying to avoid having to re-setup the raids.

Don't worry about the CSM config. All that changes is whether you hit Ctl+I at startup to access the Intel manager or manage your disks through the BIOS which provides the same functionality with a different interface.

Remind me again is your final goal M.2 system drive with a 2 disk RAID0 for storage. Because you are almost there.

I would disconnect SATA cables from SSD's and install/config OS on M.2. After setup, reconnect SSD's and change BIOS AHCI to RAID. Make only the SSD's members of the RAID and leave the M.2 as a non member. Should be good 2 go after that.

I believe I know how to fix this but you might not like the answer. When you set the BIOS to AHCI and you can't see the m.2 then boot from the Windows 10 USB key or CD rom (or Windows 8/7) and then reinstall Windows onto the M.2. You might have to delete all partitions on the M.2 as well as any mini partitions. After Windows is installed the newly installed Windows boot manager this might solve the issue.

Make sure your data is backed before doing this as everything will be erased.

In theory this should work.  Have you tried the M.2 in the other M.2 slot?  Does the issue persist?

I have tried both slots and the results are consistent. I did do the fresh win10 install on the m.2 in ahci mode. I'm going to remove the raid configuration and re-add it. I'm hoping that will work. I'm out of ideas. To be honest, when I tried this in the beginning, I did not have any other drives connected on the Intel sata controller. When changing it to raid mode, I made sure the m.2 was the "only" drive connected to the mobo and I still wasn't able to use the drive when sata was changed from ahci to raid.

To the best of my knowledge there is no reason why this should not work.  I have passed this onto the engineers and will work with them on your issue.  There may be an error in your process, we may need a BIOS update, or you might have a board with a glitch on it and needs replacing.  Either way, I have subbed this thread and will be follow it as well as working with engineering to help you resolve this issue.

Can I get the model and firmware of the M.2 device as well as the SATA SSD's?

    kevngonaburnsya,
please email directly regarding this issue.
I may have a BIOS fix that resolves this for you.
