I recently purchased the Highpoint RocketRAID 2720SGL (Its not a hardware accelerated RAID) but it works quite well so far... more to come.

I was a bit apprehensive about buying it, because of the history of the SR2 BIOS and RAID cards, but the price is amazing... and it supports 8 SATA drives @ Sata 3 (6G) so I thought I would give it a try.

I was able to get it to show up in BIOS by disabling the onboard SATA III, and ESATA.

I don't have it in RAID yet, right now its just a single disk... but I wanted to show the preliminary results.
This is a Bootable disk.

(Using as I type)

You can see that the RocketRaid shows an improved ATTO even without RAID.

I will be posting some RAID Data... probably in 5 days.
(And if any BSODs show up)

Please do some raid setup and do some benchmark, sata 3 on sr-2 does not have much of a performance so we all would like to make an upgrade. Did you set it up quite easy or? Thanks much

Very nice however price of Highpoint RocketRAID 2720SGL soothes me better and i think that there will be not much difference in performance.

    OK.. here's the update.
As you all know, I started with my OS on a RocketRaid 2720 as a single disk in "JBOD".
I posted the ATTO scores in my original post.

I was not sure how it was going to work for RAID 0... but it turns out... migration is part of the software.
Expanding/Migrating an Array With the OCE/ORLM function, you can migrate an array from one RAID level to another RAID level and/or expand the array dynamically, even under I/O load.

Ok so it took only 19 minutes to migrate the ENTIRE array to RAID 0.

After that, I ran ATTO for my 2 disk RAID 0, write cache off, read ahead enabled.

Hm, so the only downside is that your onboard SATA III, and ESATA  have to be disabled while having RocketRAID 2720SGL functioning?

For safety, and given the history of BSODS with SSDs, keep my OS separate from my data drives.

If I add any more drives to the array I will update here.

I have not attempted to copy files from USB to my RAID drive yet..
(Someone else seemed to have a problem with that).
But I don't think they turned off SATA III and eSATA.
EDIT: Not out of the woods yet... maybe a problem with the SSD BSOD issue... I was checking the log just now, the raid controller is showing failure events for the disk even though I have not noticed these failures.

I will check firmware for the SSD... and see if I need to make any changes.  I will keep you up to date.

I had BIOS v1.0, and updated to 1.2.
Hopefully that will fix the oddness.  Will update over next few days with reports on stability.

PS... the website for the BIOS has 2 kinds of updates, 1 for raid and 1 for non-raid... I only updated the raid bios.

(I still have to check what a non-raid bios does... since there seems to be no mention of this anywhere)

Ps... The BIOS was updated in windows... took 10 seconds, and a reboot.
Followed by 1 more reboot after windows recognized a change.

Interestingly, the error messages I had read were from a very OLD log.  After updating they disappeared and the new log was back.  I can only guess it was some v1.0 oddness.
No errors so far.  If anything happens will let you know.

Hey but you wrote "I was able to get it to show up in BIOS by disabling the onboard SATA III, and ESATA." right?...and I found this:
Whenever I try to move data to or from a USB3 drive or Raid.... to or from my 8 drive sataIII rocketraid 2720 the USB3 device disappears (shortly after beginning the transfer) from windows and the data transfer stops. Anyone else using a rocketraid? Have any problems? Everything else works... and I CAN move data either way from a USB2 port. It just seems that there is a conflict between the RocketRaid 2720 and USB3 on this board.
    Help?
2 Xeon 5650s, GTX470, 12gigs ram, SataIII Seagate 2T boot drive. 8 more of the same drive in the raid.
    Frank Smith
fter reading some of the other Raid issues other people are having on here it occurs to me that at least some of my problem might be coming from the SATAIII built into the board, so... I moved my sataIII boot drive to a SataII port.... and now I have actually managed to transfer some data from an external usb3 raid to my internal Rocketraid 2720. However... max speed was about 35MBS. Yuck. Then I tried to transfer from one usb3 drive to another.... and one of the drives timed out and was gone from windows...NOT very promising.
Since I'm getting about 200MBS from eSATA to the internal raid... USB3 at 35MBS is NOT a good alternative. Anyone had similar results? What kinds of usb3 to usb3 speeds are you getting?

Yes, I saw that.  I think it might be because he has not deactivated E-SATA and SATA III?

I am not having that issue.

I  just copied an AVI of 535MB from the USB 3.0 that has an ADATA N004 on it to the ADATA RAID 10 array... it took 5 seconds maybe 6 at the most.

I repeated in the other direction, same result.
So, I am not seeing the USB 3.0 issue.

Also, I have migrated to a new RAID 10 using 4 ADATA S511, so new Benches:
    ATTO:

Honestly, I thought I was going to see a worse decrease in performance going from 2 drives in RAID 0 to 4 drives in RAID 10... due to overhead of the mirroring.  I was pleasantly surprised.

    Here's the CrystalDiskMark

    So...
So far... No USB 3.0 conflicts noted.  File copy for 536MB file took 5 secs
4 disk RAID 10 read performance better than RAID 0 x 2 disks, some hit on write performance.

The only issue I have pending is that windows is not properly seeing the size of the array...
just waiting on a response from Highpoint ...
    I just received
Thank you for contacting us. The issue xxxxx has been generated and your details stored in our tracking system.

So, I will send updates when I know more.

Hi.. The 9265 works fine whether the Marvell controller is disabled or not as I'm sure all of them will. I've got it disabled now but the e-sata is still enabled.  Theres also a boot slot priority that you should be able to choose your controller so it initializes before the marvell but it dosent seem to work..  I'm not sure this is what its for but it makes sense

Your card has a large onboard cache, all you have done is bench your cache with those settings I am afraid. To get a better picture of what is going on you will need to put test file up to 1 gb or more instead of 250 mb default.
On another note atto is not a very good bench for ssd's, even worse for ssd's on a raid card. As ssd or Anvils benchmark are way better.

I am not using SATA III or e-SATA at all.
(I have no use for em and I was not interested in going thru a long process to see if the rocketRAID was going to work or nor work.
Once it worked, I just kept it that way.

I physically installed the RocketRaid with everything turned on in BIOS.
But, it was not working properly.
I cloned my OS while SATA III was still on in BIOS to new drive.
Then Turned OFF SATA III and E-SATA in Bios,
    then RocketRaid worked.
I did not turn the SATA III back on.  I did not Turn E-SATA back on.
The RocketRAID provides 8 SATA III / SAS , and is much better than the Marvel for my purposes, so I left the marvel off in BIOS.

    @Lollygag... NICE SPEED!!!

To Confirm... you are showing the ATTO for 4 Vertex 3 MaxIOPS SSD in RAID 0 ?
    Hmm... thats really great speed.

You have all the correct settings now I think.  The transfer size is a range... from 512kilobytes to 8192megabytes.
You pretty much want to see the whole range... it gives you a good idea of the speed of the drive for different file sizes.

Most people look at the 4K because its pretty typical of small file size transfer.
And look at the higher 512MB thru 8192MB for things like video file transfers.

    Yea thats 4 120gb vertex 3 mi
I just setup a raid 10 array with 4 1TB hdds to be my main backup so now I'm transfering all files that were temporarily on the R0 ssd array to the R10 and noticeing some odd behaviour. For instance I'll pull a 20 GB file..  an unpacked folder consisting of 1000's of files  and it moves almost 10GB in 5 seconds but then takes 4 or 5 minutes to finish the other half.  And the bench seems odd as well..

I don't think the bench is too odd.
My bench for just 1 ADATA is 500Megabyte/s Read.
    2 S511 in Raid 0 is 950MB/s

I chose to go with Raid 10 for safety, but if I had gone with 4 in Raid 0, it would probably show something around 1600 to 1700 read MB/sec Read.

Also, The MaxIOPS has a bit more speed than the S511 so it makes sense that it broke the 2K barrier.

If your wondering why I went with ADATA over the MaxIOPS its because I saw too many Vertex 3 / Agility complaints on forums.

Not sure about large disk writes... might be a windows OS buffer thing?

Beats me?  That one is messed up.  I don't see how it is possible to be real unless you have some sort of caching system enabled.

Are you aware of anything like that that you might have enabled for your system?
