Well this story started when I originally Rma'd my 780TI that had failed some time back, I received a 980 which was wonderful I was happy.
Once I started to use the 980 It began to crash right off the bat, I spoke to a few lads from EVGA ( Dominik Ungermann/Ben Wilson Evga Reps) and we arranged for it to be replaced which was fantastic.
Keep in mind that this was clearly a refurb as most of our replacements are, so they send me out a new one and you know I'm just thinking its some bad luck you know?
The new card comes with all sorts of marks on the pcb, white marks and some light scratches ( refurb ). I spoke to a few of the evga reps and we agreed maybe we need to send it back however in the end I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt.

That brings us up to tonight, here I am minding my own business.. sausage in hand.. netflixing and chilling solo, then screen goes black for a moment, hard crash..but as the system powers down (looking at my case) I see my 980 spool up.. then a spark comes off the bottom end of the card ( NOT KIDDING..) then a white hot flame(electrical fire?no clue) juts out the end of the graphics card near the connector for the fans to the pcb. At this point I reach for the mains and turn the power off...

This has never happened to me before, I like all of you have had my fair share of faulty cards but this takes the cake, so netflix and chill session interrupted I go to check the system boot up without a card, everything appears to be fine.

PSU Check
Cpu Check
Ram Check
Motherboard Check
All hard drives and connected peripherals - Check

I install a backup card and we are back up and running (albeit a legend from another Era the 8800GT).

What a great way to end New Years Day? Just come off a 2 week rotation of 12 hour shifts hoping to enjoy a nights gaming and poof.

:( Give me hugs?

You should test your PSU.  Make sure all is well and your power supply is not over volting the GPU

I managed to get this sorted with Dominik one of the EVGA reps he has been amazing in the whole process since my original card failed.
However it appears there have been some issues.

I was told I would get a 980 Replacement for the 980 that failed spectacularly, the part number out was  04G-P4-2986-KR which is a 980 FTW.
I even had the 980 FTW part number:  04G-P4-2986-KR registered on my EVGA profile by the lovely people at Evga.
However.. I have received a 780TI in the post this evening..

Don't know what to make of this /o\.

Might want to edit the second image and blur out the Serial Numbers.

Are you happy with receiving 780Ti Classified KingPin version over a GTX980 FTW?

To be honest I am so focused on the fact its not the same series card \o/.

Would you say its a good replacement? I am a little off lately when it comes to the specs I know the kingpin was the best cards in the 7 series.

I'd reach out to EVGA, seems someone may have made a mistake.

Have you opened the box & examined the card to make sure its a 780Ti KP Classy?

I have not, I have kept it sealed as its a brand new sealed unit. I wanted to wait for a reply from EVGA before opening it as they may wish I keep it sealed if I need to send it back?
    What do you all suggest?

What is the best way to see if the PSU is overvolting i.e reading the values on HW monitor? How does one tell if you don't mind me asking?
I have two PSU's Superflower exact same models in two different machines with identical builds so I could compare but need to know what to look for.

Can you see the part number through the back of the box - does it have the clear window?

Unfortunately no, its completely sealed and there are no clear windows to see the serial, I imagine if I open it it should not be a problem but I am not sure. It may be best to leave it sealed so if it is sent back it will still be boxed new.

I really do want to open it and see though because who knows maybe there is a 980 inside lol \o/.

Thanks mate, I imagine my replacement will be with me next week as I sent my to the UK centre which they got next day (yesterday). Was told it would ship today but my account still says its preparing to ship, was yours bang up to date or delayed? I have a feeling it wasn't shipped today.

I would be confused too.  It doesn't match what evga website says they sent you.

If you send in a GTX980, you should receive a GTX980 or better card back. GTX780Ti Classified KingPin is a nice card but does it match or exceed GTX980 in performance.  I think a GTX 980 FTW > GTX 780Ti KingPin. It's up to you if you keep the GTX 780Ti Classified KingPin or push the issue to get the card it shows evga was suppose to send out.

There has been more and more of this kind of confusion with EVGA products lately. Boxed wrong, serial numbers don't match, wrong cables with power supplies, shrouds don't match video boards. I'm keeping an eye on this latest developement to see what kind of answer EVGA has for this nonsense before I make any future purchasing decisions or recommendations.

I don't intend to keep the card and I really don't have the sort of time to wait around for it to be picked up abs delivered. It's just a massive inconvenience, but what choice I have.

You can send it back and have it picked up at a place and time of your choosing.
I use interparcel.com and I can choose where they picked it up and also a time window such between 9am-12pm. That way you don't have to stay at home too long plus it's cost approx £12 in total to ship my two cards, tracked and signed for.

To be honest I am so focused on the fact its not the same series card \o/.

Would you say its a good replacement? I am a little off lately when it comes to the specs I know the kingpin was the best cards in the 7 series.

What it looks like to me is the original card was a 780ti @ that time they didn't have any, when he shipped the other card back the 780ti kingpin edition was Instock so they shipped a compatible card to him. Which is equal to or better than what he sent in to them in the first place. Which was what the warranty covered. Just saying.
