Recently I upgraded my video card to the new EVGA Geforce GTX 960. After reading multiple threads and articles I saw PCI-E 3.0 is backwards compatible. I previously had an EVGA Geforce GTX 9800+ PCI-E 2.0. Once I installed the new card the system does receive video but when it gets to the point where it would boot into windows the machine just restarts. I put the old video card back in, the system boots fine. I uninstalled all the previous video card drivers and still giving me the same issue. This is a computer I built back in 2009 and upgraded every so often through the years.

The following is the specs for my machine:

EVGA E758-TR 3-Way SLI (x16/x16/x8) LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
9GB Corsair XMS DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Intel I7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHZ Quad-Core
Thermaltake Blackwidow TR2 RX 850 Watt Power Supply

I am currently running windows 7. I have considered flashing the BIOS but I would rather exhaust all other options before doing this.
My next step is to reformat with a fresh version of Windows but I have to wait for the replacement hard drive to come in monday.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You may need to update your Motherboard's Bios to use the newer Graphics Cards.

I'm at work right now, but I will definitely try that first that tomorrow. I just hate flashing the Bios because of horror stories.  Thank you for the advice

Sounds like windows is attempting to initialize the old video driver which is configured wrong for the new card, and crashing while doing so. Try removing the nvidia driver while the old card is in, uninstalling it outright, then let the new card work off the vanilla driver.

i tried that as well, used guru to remove it in safe mode completely, went back to the vanilla driver, shut down, installed new card and same results.

I'll have to try and flash the Bios when I get home from work in the morning.
