according to kitguru nbidia will skip to 900 series, which will be released in september. this is jusy rumor right now as nvidia has not shown any official announcment. http://www.kitguru.net/co...-980-in-mid-september/

    Interesting, but i highly doubt this will change anything in terms of performance and die size. Maybe they are simply doing this to setup the refresh Maxwell with proper 20nm and full core potential. (GK110 > GK104) By veering away from calling it a GTX1000 and creating something entirely different and epic!

    Well, Nvidia last did this with the 200 to 400 series, leaving the 300 series as mobile and OEM gpu's.  I swore I saw elsewhere that Nvidia was readying the 900 series as mobile gpu's, so it wouldn't seem to make sense to skip the 800 series for a simiilar reason.  Like Mystikalrush stated, though, it won't have any bearings on performance.

    they skipped over GM100 which was suppose to be 800 series
    GM200 series was the refresh anyways and was suppose to be 900
     
    to keep things simple and inline with mobile release naming this may be true
