Hi all, so I recently purchased the T2 1600w PSU to power my moster Quad SLI Titan X rig and I have some questions with regards to the power supply ports/connections.

So I understand that EACH TITAN X requires 1 PCI-e 6-pin cable and 1 PCI-e 8 pin cable to run. My question is regarding the 6-pin cables.

Can I use one (or more) of the PSU's 8 pin ports (as there are 9 of them) to feed the GPU's 6 pin ports??? as there are significantly more 8 pin PCI-e ports on the PSU that their are 6 pin (which I would ideally prefer to use for sata and perifs???

thanks in advance.
Martin

Sure can..8-pin (6+2) connectors are designed to work in 6-pin sockets..Just leave the extra 2-pin part hanging.

Thanks, but I'm curious is there a way to do it WITHOUT leaving the to extra pins hanging, i.e. can i use a custom cable with either 8 or 6 pins on on the psu side, and 6 pins on the gpu side as that would be my preferred option (I will more than likely be using aftermarket cables but I'm curious if this can be done WITHOUT having the 2 pins hanging there on the GPU side).

Better yet what would be ideal is if I could plug in 6 pin pci-e cables to the 8 pin socket on the PSU side then have those 4 cables going to the 6 pin sockets on the gpu's.

that way there would be no lose pins at all. Just wasnt sure if a 6 pin cable could be inserted into the 8 pin sockets on the T2 1600w PSU

You might need a custom/rewired cable/connector..The GPU end is an Intel standard connector/pinout, but the PSU end can be different..Here are some pinouts and connector views if it helps.

I actually meant can I use a 6 pin plug (on the psu side and plug it into the psu's 8 pin socket) and just plug it into the 6 pin on the GPU (even though the PSU ports are 8 pin NOT 6pin)??

Although it might work perfectly fine, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that seeing as how the wires are all black and not color coded for reference.

Like I said, the component end of the connectors are industry standard, but there's no industry standard for the PSU end..Some are 1:1 and others are not, which can, and has, resulted in component/PSU burnout..You can buy a cheap multimeter for 10-15 bones and check the polarity against a pinout chart, which would be the absolute safest way to be sure.

If he ask to turn cable on different side I would not do that. I'm more for simple methods.
    VGA1 - VGA2 - 1st TITAN X
    VGA3 - VGA4 - 2nd TITAN X
    VGA5 - VGA6 - 3rd TITAN X
    VGA7 - VGA8 - 4th TITAN X

    And I would use 8 cables for them. 4x 8pin + 6+2pin(6+2 not connected) and 4x 6+2pin(2pin not connected)
And 8pin side in PSU, 6+2pin side in graphic card.
    But he can use only VGA1-VGA2-VGA3-VGA4 for 4xTITAN X with 8pin + 6+2pin.
I would not do that if he want to overclock. But it's possible. In 1600W PSU you can connect much more than 4 graphics with 8+6 pin or 6+6pin.
But they made probably because 4x 8+8+6 pin graphics and just in case.

OK So this is how I WANT to connect my cards.

Is this possible or not. VGA 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 and 8 USED from the PSU. Going into my 4 Titan X's using 4 x 6 pin cables coming from 4 of the PSU's 8 pin VGA sockets . Then the other 4 VGA ports from the PSU (also 8 pins) going directly into the 8 pin sockets of the TITAN X. From the 8 pin sockets on the psu:

PSU VGA 1 ------ to 6 Pin TITAN X port (NO 2 pins hanging over)
PSU VGA 2 ------ to 6 Pin TITAN X port (NO 2 pins hanging over)
PSU VGA 3 ------ to 6 Pin TITAN X port (NO 2 pins hanging over)
PSU VGA 4 ------ to 6 Pin TITAN X port (NO 2 pins hanging over)

PSU VGA 5 ------ to 8 pin TITAN X port.
PSU VGA 6 ------ to 8 pin TITAN X port.
PSU VGA 7 ------ to 8 pin TITAN X port.
PSU VGA 8 ------ to 8 pin TITAN X port.
PSU VGA 9 ------ EMPTY, MAY BE USED AT A LATER DATE FOR SOMETHING OTHER THAN GPU'S.

I am intending to use CUSTOM cables I just wanted to know if the above config is possible WITHOUT having to have 6+2 connectors for the 6 pin TITAN X GPU sockets as the 2 hanging pins looks stupid.

Why look stupid? You can move behind 6pin...
Do what you want, only these parts go in graphic card, not in PSU...
If someone think different maybe have advice...I connect on that way...

You can use 4 cables as on right side of pictures for 4 TITAN X and you don't need nothing more.
But it's better to use more cables. In PSU go always 8 pin single connector.

You ARE NOT understanding me. I'm using BOTH 6pin AND 8 pin plugs on the GPU side. I don't want to use 6+2 pin cables for EITHER i want to use 6 pin cables for the 6 pin port and 8 pin for the 8 pin ALL ON THE GPU SIDE I know that I have to use 8 pin on the PSU side as that is the size of the plug sockets!

Yes, as long as the custom cables are wired correctly.

On a side note, I've often times just used a tool similar to this to remove unwanted connector ends which allows wires to be pulled through the sleeving/harness, and another tool similar to this to remove the consequently unneeded pins inside the connector ends.
