I have a little update from my previous post.

I just recently bought a second GTX 970 and put my card in SLi.
I realized that me playing on 1440p with 3.5GB of DDR4 isn't the best idea so I somewhat hatched an idea.

Return the 970 to Microcenter and get my money back in full, then purchase a new EVGA 980. Then when the 980 Ti comes out, would it be possible for me to upgrade the 980 to the Ti. Then sell my other 970 on eBay/Amazon, then in the future buy a second 980 Ti and put that in SLi.
Theres a 90 day upgrade duration so timing is gonna have to be on point.

Does anyone have any concerns with my idea? Is what I'm doing gonna work.

My goal is to play on 2560x1440 with maxed out graphics.
I do own the Asus Swift 144Hz 1440p monitor with G Sync so the more FPS the better.

My Rig:
Asus X99
i7-5820K (Watercooled and Overclocked to 4.7GHz, cherry picked chip)
16GB DDR4 Vengeance 2133 RAM
1x EVGA GTX 970 SSC 4GB
1x ASUS GTX 970 OC 4GB <---- The one I can still return withen the next 25 days or so for my money back.
256GB SSD (Operating system and drivers)
2TB Seagate HDD (all other)
Corsair GS800 (800 watt psu)

Thanks.

Unfortunately it's a roll of the dice. It depends on a few things...
    * You have 90 days to step-up. Will the 980 ti be out in next month as some reports say or not till September? No one but nVidia and their partners know for sure.
    * Will eVGA allow a step-up from a regular card to a ti? Previously they have, but they may decide not to. It's their choice & we won't know till we know.
At this point 2 970's with a theoretical 7GB of RAM, (I don't count that other 512mb of useless RAM), should provide you with smooth game-play considering you're using a Swift & I don't see the $$$ spent as worth it to take a chance. If you're convinced you want 2 980 ti' s. I would return the Asus 970 & maybe grab an eVGA 970 for step-up later.... Or, save you're money & wait to see what happens in May. I have been considering an upgrade myself & am waiting to see what happens. For those of us who like Max FPS this is our first world problem. 14 days after I bought my 780's the ti came out & the GTX 780 dropped $100 in price. Then, I got busy with life & stuff, & missed my step-up window. I'm sure the month I decide to upgrade to x99, x100 will come out with the Broadwell E & my rig will be obsolete.

You can play on 2560x1440, even maxed out, on 970's just fine. and with the last driver and patch, the 970's are utilizing the last bit of VRAM just fine, no stutters at all. (If you get stutters now, you're doing something wrong then. Sorry.) People are maxing games out on 2560x1440 and don't get stutters. You shouldnt have a problem. Keep the 970's for like a year or 2 and have fun on 2560x1440, and then in a year or 2, the 980ti's wll probably be cheaper in price anyway. It will play fine, i promise you. Save your money.

Edit : You "can" get by with even 1 970 on 2560x1440, but it won't be the VRAM that gets you, it will be the amount of power that's available with only 1 card.

This VRAM horse power story is blown way out of proportion, really.

We can only comment about items currently listed on the EVGA website. Rumors are just that for now...rumors.

If you want to get a GTX 980 or two of them that should be more than sufficient for a 2K monitor in most all cases.

Maybe is best when GTX980Ti show up invest in two GTX980.
I don't know, so much combination... I only know for NVIDIA is not smartest to launch GTX980Ti before R9-390X.
Manufacturer is capable to tweak card up to 20% if need for extreme cases.
And 20% stronger card than TITAN X AMD can't launch for next 12 months.
