Hey all, I am looking at upgrading when the new broadwell-e chips hit. I am having some trouble however. My biggest concern is the PCI-e 2.0 M.2 slot on the board. Are there are any PCIe 3.0 out there for the onboard M.2? Also is there a general census for the top mobo for the x99 right now feature wise? In general, I just buy the top EVGA board and call it good... but at present, the top EVGA offering appears to be a bit dated compared to other companies or at the very least missing some of the newest features. I have read about the possible "Dark" release (I also wonder which other mobo you might compare this new version too if they do in fact release one). I have been away from the enthusiast scene for about 5 years and it would seem I have a ton to catch up on. Thank you for your time, Mathieas

Well issue is that motherboards are not main focus point of EVGA. While theirs mobos are very good, it's impossible to compare them with motherboard powerhouses like Asus or Gigabyte. Big board manufacturers spam new products on regular basis. EVGA do that with VGAs. X99 Classy it's not really dated. Take into consideration that by the time X99 hit the shelves NVMe was still only in servers and nobody really was interested in it because of mega price. Then few months later Intel drop the NVMe bomb on unsuspecting consumer market and Gen.2 M.2 became more or less obsolete overnight because enthusiasts demand always more powah (or whatever you write this ;) ) even if they don't need it. Still it's not that bad. M.2 as a form factor has a lot of drawbacks. Two most obvious are limited space for slots and very hot SSDs. I've seen some new - I think - Asus boards which were equipped with SFF-8639 port next to classic SATA. That's how drives should be connected on PC, M.2 is impossible to keep cool (in particular double sided drives which catch&store a lot of hot air underneath and you can't do squat about it). It's not secret I'm not M.2 fan, it's for laptops and other space limited platforms not for PCs. As for missing newest features. Designing, testing and stuff takes time. Like I said earlier, EVGA can't compete in motherboard segment with big boys solely on volume manufactured. I have Classy and in no way I feel it's dated. Sure there are details (EVGA trademark 90 degree PSU connector and incompatibility with many advanced RAID storage setups) which are annoying, but overall Classy is very good board for overwhelming majority of users. Right now I would simply wait for Classy 2 as B-E is coming to the market in about quarter with plethora of new boards revisions. No need to spend $ now if you're not happy with something. And yes I know the feeling, switching after 7 years from X58 to 99 was a shock on some levels. :)

As a side note to this I do not know if any new motherboards will be announced by EVGA during Computex which is May 31 to 2 June.

Thank you very much ypsylon for your detailed response! You have given me some additional understanding(i did not know about the M.2 heat issues!) that will go along way in starting my research project :). Best, Mathieas

I have to disagree with this statement. EVGA Mother Boards are as good if not better than Asus. I have less problems with my EVGA boards than I ever did with Asus boards. If you think I am wrong go over to the ROG forum and see for yourself. If you happen to encounter a problem with a EVGA product you will be glad you have that product. Hands down the best product support in the business. Try dealing with ASUS it's a nightmare. I would put my X99 Classified against any ASUS board. So if you are considering EVGA your making a good choice in my opinion. After all K|NGP|N uses these boards! (I know he is sponsored by EVGA) but what the heck. Good luck with what ever you choose.

Nice machine! Like I told bcavnaugh remove two of those cards and see what happens to those scores. At the end of the day this still does not tell us who's board is the best? We would have to run the same hardware with only a board change. Still your machine is BOMB! This has been fun hope we helped Mathieas.
