As the title says I just purchased these.  So from what I understand in previous posts if I have coil whine I can expect it to go away on its own given enough break in time?  Some other posts say the EVGA reference cooler on these has some cooling issues?  Is that true or is it just a couple of odd cases where people might have gotten a bad card or they have very very poor case cooling?  What is the average overclock people are getting on these?  Is 1500 core and 8ghz memory typical?

I've got two of the 980 SC's and have no noise or 'coil whine' at all.  (I believe the coil whine problem is more on the 970's.)  They are quieter than my previous 780 vanilla cards.  The reference cooler is actually quite good as long as you have decent air flow in your case.  The factory fan curve is very conservative and if you bump it up a bit, you shouldn't have any problems.

1500 on the core is probably doable on most of the 980's if you're willing to bump up the voltage, but honestly, the stock performance is so good, I don't see why you'd want to push the card that far.  Pushing the memory to 8 ghz will be more of a problem, but as I said, see how the cards preform at stock speeds and more conservative OC's before you decide to push the cards really hard.

Just out of curiosity, did you get your cards before the price went up?

No I paid slightly more then what the price was suppsed to be.  About $10 or $15 more then what the price was originally.  No big deal.

I thought I had read in a few places that increasing the voltage on the 980's actually lowers the overclocking headroom on the 970 and 980's.  At least that is what some of the reviews are saying too

I have good air flow.  I want to overclock them because I coming from 780Ti's so I will need to push them a bit to make them worth while.  Will probably step up if something better comes out within 90 days.  I'm not to worried about the coil whine as my Haf-X case has non-stock fans in it that are relatively loud and move a lot of air.  They could probably coil whine and I wouldn't even hear it as I game with headphones.  I guess I will see.

B&H photo told me on Sunday they had the cards in stock and would ship Monday 10/20.  I got an email from them 10/20 saying that they didn't receive their stock and it wouldn't be in until 11/3 until they get any in.  Kinda lame they didn't really know what they even had.  Oh well at least mine are reserved.
